BC_Holger
Hi all, here's a new version of the update (2.6MB) for the Alps mesh. It fixes (hopefully for good) the terrain spike near Salzburg and also adds two peaks to parts of the French Alps near Grenoble that were missing in the source data. Edit: download link removed because official version of patch is now available at Avsim and elsewhere: alps_up1.zip Please download and install the update as per instructions and let me know whether everything looks okay, particularly the area of the spike in Salzburg, at N 47°44´ E 13°00´ Once I've had feedback on the patch I'll make it official and upload to the regular sites. By the way, the mesh files are now also available at simFlight and simviation. If you installed my previous version of the patch please delete the file "mesh_SRTM2_Alps_Austria_Salzburg_Patch_LOD12.bgl". Thanks to Jonathan de Ferranti for quickly fixing the source data and to all who pointed out the spike and missing mountains. If you spot other areas that are incomplete or inaccurate please let me know or directly contact Jonathan through his website http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/ Cheers, Holger
Francois Dumas
Holger, did you see my email about Courchevel ? :)
BC_Holger
Hi Francois, I have, thanks. Nothing I can do about (i.e., the airfield sitting in a hole) because the default Courchevel is based on the lame default terrain. Well, I could do something about it but I'm busy with other projects and I know that there's lots of designers that have been working on a more realistic representation of that place, specifically one without a flat runway. I've tried to check out the French Altiports package - http://www.vf-air.com/down.htm - but keep getting CTDs in the area, regardless of whether I have the mesh active or not. Perhaps someone else can check whether their version of Courchevel fits better with our mesh package. Cheers, Holger
FA
Fritz
BC_Holger
Note: I'll be translating Fritz's findings soon; I just want to find out first what he did exactly to enable the Altiports with our Alps mesh. Ciao, Holger
FA
Sorry, Holger - I've been monitoring several forums on the subject and I completely overlooked that this one is English. I must have acquired some serious other defects as well while desparately trying to make Courchevel work, because part of my earlier posting is inaccurate: 1. I do have your mesh LOD10 but my altiports were recently published at FlightSim (fraltpts.zip) 2. I'd be happy to do some further testing for you with various TVMLs. Actually, I am quite content with 19; I lose some fine details (as the gentle and delicate undulations of the banks along your superb River Gorge) but from what I've seen so far in other regions with "haute mesh" (Austria Pro 2004), hills and mountains take on a more natural look with the lower definition. 3. different AltiPorts, different *.bgls - my package contained AF2_s for each airport. Sorry again for the confusion I created and the false hopes I raised (though the FlightSim versions are quite attractive, too). Fritz

FA
Jan-Paul, damit hast Du "den Vogel abgeschossen"! Jan-Paul just kindly pointed out to me that there is a newer version of my FlightSim-Altiports available at vf-air.com. Fritz
BC_Holger
Hi Fritz, indeed but those are the packages that me and others keep having crashes with, with or without the mesh active. Hence my interest in a fix or work-around. Let us know what you come up with, please. Cheers, Holger
FA
Hi Holger, I have now edited AF2_LFLJ_AltiportsFrance_GNemoz.bgl with AFCAD by inserting a runway. I chose the height of the rwy5-end as elevation, made it appr. 800ft long and pointing towards the rwy23-end. Of course, such a runway makes little sense with Courchevel's slope, BUT: a) now LFLJ shows up correctly in the main airport menu (because the runway makes it an airport and gives the "kiss of life" to the starting locations): http://www.tg29.at/menu.jpg b) only the upper end of the runway is useful for take-off anyhow: http://www.tg29.at/startloc.jpg As you may notice, I arranged for the Austrian Airforce to take the airport and I intend to hold and defend it against any attempt to change my present Courchevel setup (new versions). The guy in the background is a typical Austrian crack guard on duty :D Fritz
BC_Holger
Hi all, I've just uploaded the official version of the update files to Avsim, simviation, and flightsim; the file should become available tomorrow. File name is "alps_up1.zip". Please download and install that official version as we made further improvements to the patch files. Again, if you downloaded the initial, faulty version of the patch, please delete the file "mesh_SRTM2_Alps_Austria_Salzburg_Patch_LOD12.bgl". If you installed the update version from this thread above just overwrite its six patch .bgl files with the new versions from the official alps_up1.zip. Jonathan welcomes any further obesrvations about missing or incomplete features in the mesh files. There's always room for more updates ;-) Cheers, Holger
