FSUIPC and FS Commander 8.5

Recommended Posts

Hello Pete, I have a problem I hope you can help me with. I recently purchased F S Commander and I'm

unable to get it to connect to FS2004. I get an error msg "no process response".

I have the current FSUIPC version 3.9 in the modules folder of FS2004.

I see in the SimFlight forum that they clearly state that you must install FSUIPC "as administrator" if

you are using Vista [which I am]. I don't see a way to run/install FSUIPC "as administrator". I 'think'

that you can only do that with .exe files not.dll files....or am I missing something?

Would appreciate any assistance you may be able to give.

[fyi] I was running FSNav4 previously with no problems.

Regards

The only reason for running "as administrator" (except when Registering FSUIPC3) is if you are

(a) running under Vista, and

(b) have let FS install into its default "Program Files" folder (ugh!), and

© are running an external program which needs to access FS's folders.

The problem is that Vista protects all Program Files folders! It installs FS9, which is not a Vista-aware program, into hidden folders so it can write to them itself, and shows the rest of the world "aliasses" instead. not the real folders! In fact you can only see the real folders in Windows Explorer if you run that "as administrator".

In general, it is best never to install non-Vista aware programs into Program Files. However, assuming that's too late now ...

... Yes, you can get around it by running FS9 "as administrator". (Not FSUIPC itself, which simply becomes PART of FS9). But if you do this you must run EVERY FSUIPC-using accessory program "as administrator" too -- Vista actively prevents programs of different privilege levels from sharing data!

Hi Pete, Oh dear...FS9 is in program files...I wasn't aware that that was a problem.

I am running Vista and I did install FS9 under compatibility mode and I do start FS9 under administrator.

I don't understand your last comment "But if you do this you must run EVERY FSUIPC - using accesory program "as administrator" too...."

What does that mean?

Thanks for the quick reply...much appreciated.

Hi Pete, Oh dear...FS9 is in program files...I wasn't aware that that was a problem.

The problem is only that it makes its folders protected. And in turn it means other steps are then needed for Add-Ons.

I don't understand your last comment "But if you do this you must run EVERY FSUIPC - using accesory program "as administrator" too...."

What does that mean?

It means just exactly what it says! I'll try slightly different words: because a program "run as administrator" cannot talk to a program NOT "run as administrator", any program you run which needs to talk to FSUIPC needs to be run at the same privilege level as FS -- i.e. you have to run all FSUIPC client programs "as admnistrator" too! FSCommander is an example of a program which talks to FSUIPC and therefore needs to be at the same privilege level.

Sorry, I can't really explain more basically or simply than that. Is English not your first language? Maybe someone else can help with this?

Hi Pete, it's not English that's my problem.....born and bred in the UK....[now living in Dubai]

I do run FS9 as administrator and I also installed FSC under compatibility mode and as administrator.

My problem was with the advise from the SimFlight forum that stated that FSUIPC had to be run

under the same criteria, which i didn't understand.

So, does it all now work?

Well, FSUIPC is only part of FS once installed, so if that's run with privileges, so is FSUIPC.

If FS was installed in, say, C:\FS9 (which is the sort of place I always install FS in -- usually on a different hard drive in fact, so it would be D:\FS9 -- then you'd not have any problems with running everything normally. It's the darned annoying protections in Vista which cause the ruckus!

Hi Pete..., no, still isn't working. Gone back to FSNav4 which works no problem.

I understand [better] now the relationship between FSUICP and the program.

If [when] I need to reinstall FS9 I'll go with your advice on location. Ironicaly I have FSX

on a seperate disk but don't use it.

Nevermind, 40 Euro's down the toilet if I can't get it working......not life threatening:)

Thanks for the advice and swift response.

Oh! forgot to mention....hope you're not a Stoke supporter.

Oh!, I haven't thrown in the towel yet. I'll get it working. I've contacted the program producer

and they [he] is looking into it. I've also put the issue on the IVAO forum

Well, also look in the FSUIPC Log file. If there's anything there looking suspicious, let me see it. You could even enable IPC read/write logging, to see if the program is actually managing to excvhange some information before failing.

Note that I'm away from next Wednesday for 8 days.

I can't imagine it can be anything to do with FSUIPC as everything else [iVAO, VATSIM, FSNav 4.7 etc] are

all working. I think it has something to do with the FSC.exe file not having an adminstrator option even

though it was installed under that criteria.

Happy holidays.....I'm also away in Europe at a wedding next week.

I'll let you know if [when] I get it working.

Installing doesn't normally need extra privileges because anything of type .msi or with "install" or "setup" in the name gets elevated admin rights in any case. It is the RUN-TIME, not the installer, that will need to be at the same level of privilege as FS -- you must either run both normally or both "as administrator".

To run a program with elevated admin rights you have to right-click it and select "run as administrator". There may be an option for this to always happen in its Properties.
