hi,

i have a problem with widefs.

i have 3 computers one of which has win98.my other 2 computers have winXP.by using fsuipc and widefs i can communicate with win98 computer but i cannot connect two winXP computers to each other.

i've checked versions of FSUIPC and wideFS and they all match.what can be the possible problem.can it be a problem because of wrong network settings.(i have ipx/spx and tcp/ip protocols)

thanks.

Unless you took the extra steps to install IPX from the WinXP disks, it's not installed. Microsoft is phasing out IPX as a protocol. It's possible the Win98 machines are trying to connect via that rather then TCP/IP.

In which case XP machines won't even know they exist unless they are running TCP/IP

Win98 connects IPX ports automatically. WinNT/2K/XP cannot do that. It needs the server node provided in full. Please check the WideFS documentation. Follow every single step in the trouble shooting list there.

I have completely given up trying to make my own mixed Win98 and WinXP network work properly with IPX/SPX. It was because WinXP is so downright IPX/SPX unfriendly that I worked hard on WideFS to make it really efficient with TCP/IP. Although IPX/SPX is theoretically faster (it is simpler, has less layers and small overheads), I don't think you'll suffer from using TCP/IP, expecially if you have a 100 Mbps network.

Regards,

Pete
