No AI traffic on Mega Airport Frankfurt

Hi,

I am running FSX under W7 including all SP's and SDK. I have installed several of Aerosoft's Mega Airports. Everywhere AI works fine with one exception: EDDF or Mega Airport Frankfurt. AI traffic worked fine on the default EDDF, but after installing MAF I am the only plane on the airport. Unfortunately, after uninstalling MAF, and back to the default EDDF there was also no AI traffic anymore.

Shaun Fletcher of Aerosoft could not help me. We tried almost every trick in the book. When I check the Airport using MyTraffic Management, all gates are active. The crazy thing is, that I had exactly the same problem on physicly the same PC when it was still under Vista. Back then I had to uninstall and re-install everything (without MAF, of course) to be able to see AI traffic on EDDF again. On top of that, I have a new PC connected to my other sim, a scale 100% B737-800 cockpit (W7) and installed everything from the same box, the same DVD, and that installation has perfect AI traffic on MAF.

My guess is that something inside FSX got corrupted. I know this can hardly be a MyTraffic problem, but since you guys know more about 'how it all works' than I do, I desperately ask if you have any idea on where I should look for a solution (other than never fly to or from Frankfurt again). :)

There was one user with a never understood FRA problem around 2007, was that you?

Still my long term experience with FSX AI traffic is that traffic not showing on one airport always means that there is an incompatible AI traffic schedule for this or a nearby airport installed. I assume also Egelsbach and Finthen are quiet? So please use MyTraffic Communicator, run the search for traffic bgls, and if you do not find the answer in the text file that opens, post this into here.

Hi Burkhard,

It might have been me, but if I remember well, it was back in 2008.

With the GA slider on 80% I was at Egelsbach and there were a lot of AI planes parked. On Finthen however it was very quiet, I was the only plane there. Even after waiting half an hour. But I saw AI traffic passing by at 8000 feet at some distance.

I started the My Traffic 2010 Editor (if that is what you mean with MT Communicator) and found the file D:\FSX\MyTraffic\MT2010.myt and opened it.

When I hit the Select Airport button and select EDDF from the list and click on Time Table, I can see a list that runs from 00 3 until 2359. Some lines are double, some partly are blank, f.i.:

0002 | 0124632 | Lufthansa A320 Dest: UKHH Osnova daily

0002 | 0183182 |

but that might be normal.

I could not find anything that looked like 'search for traffic bgls' within this program, but that might not be the place to look. In the D:\FSX\Mytraffic directory I found MyCommercialRoutes.DAT and opened it with a text editor. With a Ctrl-F search I found many, many times EDDF. Can you be more specific on exactly where to look for what file?

And...by the way.... if that is a solution..... can I copy files from the other sim (where EDDF-MAF works perfectly)? And if so, what specific files should that be?

MyTraffic Communicator is a central tool of MyTraffic Professional, which is the version supported here. It looks you have the Aerosoft version installed, which has own management tools. I know little about that, but all it does is to call a command procedure Traffic_bgls.bat, if you have that you can just double click to that. If you haven't, it has been distributed here under look into there how to use it. The editor is a tool that allows to create new flight plans, but your problem are neither flight plans nor aircraft, but a severe damage to FSX in the area near Frankfurt, which in 99.9% of all cases means you have a file installed there in an old FS8 data format. There is no missing file, there is at least one file too many, and you have to find and delete that. Just look into the above mentioned topic, and if the output traffic_schedules.txt is not clear to you then just paste it into here.

By the way I just saw that Finthen has no parking and so no traffic in MyTraffic X, how could that happen to an airport I live 5 km away  So just have a look how crowded EDFH and ETAR are.

Yes, I do have the Aerosoft version installed. Living near Finthen, well.... from Google Earth it looks very nice indeed.

I see no candidate in here. So we have to make some systematic checks. Please look at ETAR, EDFH if they are fully crowded.

When you run the traffic toolbox dump airport like explained in the MyTrafic editor manual, does the resulting file contain Information about EDDF, which runways, parks, could you paste this here?

I checked both, ETAR and EDFH and both have a lot of parked AI traffic. I did nopt wait until something moved, but I think that the fact that there are planes proved that AI is active out there.

I opened with the editor the file MT2010.myt; selected Aiport and selected EDDF from the list. It shows:

ID EDDF

My Priority blank

Name Frankfurt

Country D

Lat 50.0333057 Lon 8.5704553 Alt 110

International Aiport is checked

Runway info: Hard 4 13123 Soft 10 33 Water and Snow 0 0

Scalar 0.7

Cap 1547.0

Usage 1934.0

Class B

Parking info

Gate 180 40 checked

Ramp 32 14 checked

Cargo 18 40 checked

The rest is 0 0 and not checked

I also checked thefil MyAirports.DAT.

The header of EDDF reads:

EDDF,50.033305697,8.570455313,110.0,B,6,0.70,Germany

...and then follows a very long list with a lot of duplicate lines, but that is the same in other large airports

Forget about the MyTraffic editor, MyTraffic comes with EDDF as busy as it can be be just from disk. Something must be broken on your PC that is NOT in the MyTraffic folder. So we need to know if the Airport EDDF as you have it installed is able to handle AI traffic. For this we need to know if it has parkings and runways, and the best way to see this is using the Traffic Toolbox dump airport. If you cannot get the SDK working, you can also see if, when you start FSX and can select your start position, you get the choice of about 100 gates, but I would prefer to see what dump airport from within FSX says since that is what the AI traffic sees.

If I understood right, you have the same installed (MAF and MyTraffic ) on another system, and it is working there? So we already know the prblem not to be in MAF nor in MyTraffic.

Just a quicky, When I change location in FSX, select EDDF, I see all the gates and other parking places that I can select, so I think they are all there. I am 99.9% sure that I installed SDK including the SP's, but funny enough I don't see a menu entry for SDK.

Yes I have another sim together with my son-in-law, but that is at some distance from where I live (near Schiphol). We had a sim specialist building that PC for us and he installed FSX and the PDMG B738 model. But I installed alle the airports (including MAF) and myTraffic2010 myself from exactly the same boxes.

(Un)fortunately I am going on a holiday for 3 weeks now, so I will dive deeper into it after June 5th.

So far thanks for you help.

Hi Burkhard,

I'm back. Here's what I did this AM on my ongoing journey to get AI traffic back at MAF/EDDF.

1. I removed both Franfurt directories from D:\FSX\aerosoft\ (to be exact Mega Airport Frankfurt and Mega Airport Frankfurt_LC)

2. I Wipe-cleaned the whole drive using ZDelete-Wipe to make sure nothing is left behind

3. I copied both directories from my other sim (that does show AI @ EDDF) into the above menytioned place.

4. I started FSX, moved to EDDF, and... I am still the only plane on the airport.

So we can be sure now, that although the installation of MAF caused the problem, the airport files (bgls) of the MAF scenery are not causing the problem.

So there must be some place where the 'engine' that drives AI traffic, looks and find something or misses something that blocks AI-traffic from showing up.

Have you got any idea where to look?

A systematic approach would be:

disable ALL addon scenery folders, including addon scenery and MyTraffic, in scenery library - never uninstall any addon, that must go wrong at some point.

Now you have exactly NO traffic - use traffic explorer to check this. If there is a single Cessna somewhere makes a big difference.

Next, enable MyTraffic as scenery. Does it show traffic now at EDDF, EDFE, EDMA,ETAR, EDFH?

My traffic sliders are around 50% for both (commercial and GA).

After disabling all I checked all 5 airports and on all the toolbox shows only me and not one single other plane.

Then I activated MyTraffic 2010 and checked again. The 4 others have AI traffic parked. On EDDF I am alone.

If I open the Traffix Toolbox Explorer on EDDF, I see no traffic From EDDF and not to EDDF. I see traffic designated to the other airports, but that mioght be in line with what I see around me.

If you see the bypassing traffic, but not departing or landing, then you do not have a valid version of Frankfurt airport installed, or an invalid broken one overwrites those that you have installed.

Look into the folder scenery\0601\scenery. Has any of the file been modified there after august 2006?

Last idea:

zip all the 0601 folder on the computer where it works, MOVE the one you have on the not working system out of any scenery folder, do not delete it, and then untip the one from the working computer to there. Next, delete all the scenery indices, and then start FSX.

In the 0601 directory I've found several files dated in 2007. During lunch hour today I'll hop on my bike to go to the other sim to make a copy and perform the actions you suggested afterwards. Will it be enough to go in and out Settings/Scenery library for rebuilding the indexes? Or do I have to manually remove the index files? If so, where can I find them and what are the filenames?

If you can tell me which files I can upload them to here, all are too much, no need for the bike but if weather is nice there are worse things to do...

The scenery indices are under C:\users\all users\Microsoft\FSX...

The weather is very nice, so I took the ride.

I copied the 0601 from the other (working) sim into place, deleted the indexes, started FSX, saw that there were new indexes built, moved myself to EDDF, hit the fly now button..... and saw that I am still the only plane on EDDF (all add-on scenery is still off).

It starts to get itchy, but if you don't mind doing this, I'll go on with the next step (if any) :?:

Added on Sat June 18th:

Last week I've put it through the test by flying EHAM > EDDF. FSX crashed every time when I got close to EDDF. Then I realized that the other sim has FSX Accelleration, while this sim is on FSX DeLuxe. So my rough guess is, that it might not be possible to copy area 0601 from the 'working' sim. So I restored the original 0601, flew EDDK > EDDF and it worked fine, although it was getting more silent on the (Radar Contact) radio the closer I got to EDDF where, after landing, I was all allone again.

Funny thing is, that when I started from EDDF with the other 0601, it did not crash.

No further idea. We know FSX is working, we know the scenery files of Europe to be OK, we know MyTraffic is working since aircraft pass by.

If you place an AI aircraft using MyTraffic Interactive into EDDF, do these show up?

I have a strong feeling that there is no solution at hand for this problem. Just like a few years ago (same hardware, other OS, new installation).

I remember that while using an apparantly badly programmed other add-on (a B738 panel), occasionally parts of the scenery were not displayed, like terminal buildings, trees, parts of AI aircraft, etc. After kicking the panel out, everything was back to normal. Fact is that Aerosoft's Mega Airport Frankfurt is a large installation. After all, it is created by German designers, so a 'little' pride could have easily lead to 'a litlle to much' of scenery. It might very well be, that AI is simply pushed over the edge and therefor not visable.

My hardware: CPU Intel Core2Duo E8400 @ 3 GHz-3 Ghz.; 4 GB memory; Windows performance index: proc 6,6 graphic 7.5, HD 5,9 with Window 7 64-bit Home.

So that should not be a 'short of muscle' indicator.

I think I'll leave flying to EDDF to my other sim and stay away from Frankfurt on this one.

Thanks for the help.

This must be a very special case, since there are many costumors of that airport and MyTraffic, so if it were a common problem we would read it all over the web. If you ever pass the empty airport, and have time it still would be interesting to see if aircrat created with MyTraffic Interactive do show up there, or if this gives you an error message.
