Aircraft Texture Question

I'm in the process of making some (badly needed) texture improvements to some of the MT GA aircraft (working on the PA32 right now). I've noticed that in addition to the standard 1024x1024 diffuse and lightmap .dds files, there are smaller textures with "_1" or "_3" (example: pa32r_t_1.dds, pa32r_l_3.dds). What purpose do these smaller files serve? I guess they could be similar to mipmaps... but shouldn't they already be stored in the primary texture?

While they are in principle stored in the primary texture, it makes no sense to waste GB of memory and a lot of memory bandwidth for textures that never are fully loaded, you only come near to a handful of aircraft. The _3 is explicitely used for models which have below 50 Pixel size on Screen. The _1 are used for the perfomance models, saving memory and bandwidth for a little less resolution when you are near.
