  1. Hi Volker

I went to a flyin with my VA today at Manston (EGMH) although IVAO ATC mentioned an ILS approach my FSC moving map didn't show any. No probs I did a visual landing but it did get me to look at this further and when I used Airport Editor which I suppose gets its information from my FSX cache it showed ILS present for the runways. As I have not added new airport addons for this airport then I suppose it must be what was shown on original FSX.

How can I add these on?

I have FS9 as you know.

    Many thanks

    Tony Causer

I checked out this some more , if it helps! When I put the bgl file in Add on Scenery then the new runway doesnt show at all in FSX. When I put it back in the Aerosoft AFD file it does show ok!

Also FSX recognises the new runway designations because when you use "Choose Airport" option at start up FSX gives you 25L and 25C as options (before these were of course 25R & 25L). However interestingly it doesn't give you the new 25R as a starting option! When you start FSX the new runway is certainly visible.

FSC shows only the original runway designations.

I understand that this new runway is for Arrivals Only but still you need it with the ILS information to land there.

Apparently this update is very much "work in progress" as an interim measure whilst they produce a brand new Frankfurt programme.

    I hope this helps

    Tony

  3. I have FSC 8.5, FSX on Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I use a single screen monitor with FSX in Window mode (not full screen). I always open both FSX and FSC as Administrator.

I have used FSC for some time and upgraded several times.

Just recently I have noticed in FSC 8.4 and 8.5 that when I bring up FSC it pauses the FSX simulation which is a bit annoying. Previously it never did this. Is there something different in recent upgrades of the programme or am I doing something wrong?

  4. Like hundreds of others I changed to FSX and have been caught out by the failure of the FSNav author to even tell us whats going on. Like all of those I have had to move on. Because I prefer to fly online for VA I have learnt to use FSX Flight Planner which I can can connect to autopilot and this works reasonably well. The big drawback is that when I am asked by a controller to "Report At" a particular reporting point (usually a radio beacon) I cant change my already inputted flight plan and scan through the flight planner map to find where the hell he is talking about without completely crashing FSX.

When I looked at FSC before there were a couple of real downers for me. One was the need to run it on a seperate screen (although I do have a laptop I could use) but the other was the fact that it didnt seem possible to connect FSC to the autopilot. This for me is absolutely fundamental. Oh yes and I didnt at that time see the possibility of adding SIDs and STARs.

Have things changed since then? If so I may reconsider.

  5. Its ages since I last looked at this forum and nothing seems to have changed.

I have learnt to "get on" without FS Nav to some extent, enough to get by with my online flying. But it isnt great.

To be honest I never actually needed technical help with version 4 and so your comments on the lack of this service worries me a bit even if 5 comes out!

The "shut up and get on with it" post (which I have a feeling was a bit tongue in cheek - and had the desired effect) did at least make one sensible comment (if no other).

If the undoubted excellence of many of the features of FS Nav does have such a devoted following (the heat of this debate proves that) why the hell hasn't some much larger organisation recognised this and produced a product which can be used simply, on a single screen and interactive with FSX auto pilot / flight planner facilities? To be honest if I were this guy Helge I would have been in discussion with some of the larger FS software houses long ago. Maybe he has and they have been too stupid to take up on it.

Whatever it seems pretty much a certainty we aint gonna get FS Nav 5 unless something is said this side of Xmas so my guess is that someone will be looking to fill the undoubted demand. I cant see it being FS Commander unless they have some pretty fundamental changes. Many of the specialist payware aircraft packages such as Airbus Series 1, Pilot in Command, etc do now have very advanced programmable Nav systems in built including SID and STAR options. But what about those who want to use standard freeware or default aircraft.

No! Someone has to and will fill this vacuum.

    I wonder who?

  6. Since my last post I have downloaded and tried FS Commander. If this is the nearest thing to FS Nav then we are in trouble! You need two screen to use it properly. There is no way you can transfer the flight plan to FSX so basically it is a free standing programme, there is no equivalent to the F9 key and there is no way you can use it quickly to alter your altitude or route to meet online ATC alterations to your plan.

I have at least managed to get back oto IVAO now with their latest software for FSX and Vista but there is little point with just the GPS to assist.

There is no doubt that without FS Nav life is very difficult and I for one will not be flying online very much. If anyone knows of an option I will be glad to hear!

  7. Like many other faithful followers of FS Nav who have FSX now I have desperately awaited some news of the new FS Nav. In the meantime I downloaded the trial version of FS Commander which although an admirable add on does have some really bad draw backs.

Basically unless you have 2 monitors you simply cant run it in parallel with FSX and in full screen mode you cant run it at all! In their forum they are suggesting that FSX will not allow any other programme to exist alongside it in a full screen mode an only with 2 monitors in window mode.

The great beauty of FS Nav was that it always performed well and could be toggled using the F9 key without disturbing or having to stop FS9.

Can anyone tell us if this will still be the case when the FSX version is released? It would also be nice to know roughly when the release date will be so that I can actually go back to online flying again!

  8. For me the usefulness of FS Nav was when flying online. By being able to use the Autopilot facility it left you free to speak to ATC and make course, height and speed corrections quickly and exactly. Add this to the ability to have a bank of flight plans, SIDs and STARS and FS Nav was/is invaluable to any Virtual Airline online pilot.

Unfortunately for those of us that have switched (too early) to FSX and Vista, FS Nav is just one of a range of tools we have temporarily lost. Others include Vatsims Squawkbox and even the IVAO IVap tool doesnt work properly in Vista yet.

As a result of all this I sure that many simmers have drifted away from the "hobby" to await better times. I wouldn't mind betting that a number of VAs and the likes of Vatsim and IVAO have seen a drastic reduction in activity as a result of this. Many people have stuck with FS9 and XP (sensible people) until all the add ons are there and everything works on FSX and Vista.

So dont be too down on the FS Nav guys I am sure they are working hard to overcome the problems these new programs and operating systems are bringing. Also better they get all the bugs out of it before we get it. However I do agree with one thing. Why the hell doesnt someone have the sense to announce where they are with it? If it will be ready in July or delayed to the end of the year - just say so or everyone will walk off to Flight Commander!
