[Fly-in results, comments and musing...]

Thanks to everyone for showing up for the official 2nd annual fly-in. Why it’s ‘official’ I don’t know it just sounded like a nice term to use. :P A SPECIAL thanks to Francois for providing a server for us to use, not just for the fly-in, but all year round.

First I’m quite amazed that so many guys were able to complete the course or at least a better part of it. The runways were purposely made to be difficult to land at considering this was a race. Most were quite short and a few of them had obstacles placed near them to make a direct approach a wee bit difficult. Hideaway Camp especially was very difficult because of the natural obstacles that surround the entire field. I’d test flown the route a number of times and even though I designed it, I had trouble completing it in the time that I allotted.

Keeping track of where everyone was proved to be difficult! In addition to the participants using either FS9 or FSX, we also had some guys flying the route clockwise and others flying counter clockwise.

It was great meeting many of you for the first time online. Most of us are just names and faces (via an avatar) on a forum, but flying together online together adds a personality to the name and helps to make our little online community more personal.

I’d originally planned on having some very hard and tight rules, but the reality of the situation was time just didn’t allow for a lot of rules and regulations. The course itself was brutal (considering the time allotment) and in some cases a T&G was required. I’d originally wanted everyone to read the musical sign at each field, but again, there just wasn’t the luxury of time to hold at a field in order to do that. Very few actually were able to land at every field, and upon reflection, I’d asked for too much in such a short time span. This was my 1st planned event and I learned quite a bit from it.

Creating the 10 fields and getting them to work in FS9 and FSX and allowing for all of the possible computer configurations out there proved to be a huge challenge. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of GaryGB. He and I spent many long hours fine tuning each file in order that everyone would have a level playing field. A big thank you to GaryGB for the many hours of work that he did behind the scenes to make those files possible.

Hopefully we can all do this again. First and foremost will be when the new EmmaX is released. It looks like the new EmmaX is going to be an incredible piece of work and we’ll have an entire peninsula to fly around vs. just our beloved little airfield.

Now to the winner of the event…

Since nobody actually completed the course (within the alloted time), I had to look at who did the best considering not just the number of fields that they were able to visit, but also the number of miles flown and a reasonable consideration as to the amount of time taken. This was complicated by the fact that the course could be flown in either direction and the distance required by cutting back to Emma could be short or long depending upon which direction you were flying.

Dobie came in 1st place since he visited 9 fields out of 10 in a time of 2 hours and 6 minutes. He gets the PC Pilot magazine number 45 from March-April 2007.

For the random draw I assigned a number to everyone that was present and then visited a web site and picked the 1st number that I saw on the web page. The number was 4 and that number was assigned to OJ, so he wins PC Pilot magazine issue number 44 from Jan-Feb 2007.

Thanks to everyone for making the fly-in not just a success, but a really fun event for all of us to get together online to fly as a group and also a chance to shoot the breeze a little while flying.

I had planned to fly along with Cliff as we are likely using the same type of aircraft. I hope that I can be so positioned in your scheme of things to do so; that is, fly counter-clockwise. Cliff is so Anti establishment these days. :lol:

There are a couple of fine gentleman that told me of this fine place called Emma Field Flying Club. They are two real great friends and have taught me a great deal. (I think) I shall not name the two since they will not buy anymore beer.

Greetings, I have just recently joined Emma Field Flying club. I have seen the download for Emma Field but it is in Euro's I believe. I live in Kansas USA and so without knowing the conversion I am not sure on exactly how much the software costs.

If anyone can assist I will appreciate it and a virtual beer to everyone.
