  1. Looks like the A's have it.

    There is a new Session:

    Same IP address 67.38.117.13

    Session Name: EFFC Event Session

Password Hint: EMMA Field's resident care taker.

(If you don't know the answer send me a PM and I'll give the answer)

I am not sure how to best get the password to all members quickly.

Perhaps one of EFFC's operators that has access to everyones email

address could send it to all members??

The information above, including the hint, you have above could be posted to the Emma Field website....no emailing necessary. :D

    brad.

  2. Of course, as a warm weather alternate to Emma, we could 'adopt' SABA as the Carribean affiliate of Emma and add the necessary scenery to Emma-tize it.! Teddy would appreciate the weather change, and Fritz might not be so grumpy...... 8)

Then add a European affiliate......course getting from one affiliate to another might be tough in the birds that fly into Emma though. :D

    brad

  3. I live not that far from Emma field, and it tends to rain and fog here a bit. :D

However, I still get to Emma by flying along the Hood Canal (the body of water adjacent to Emma) and then popping into Emma; pretty much VFR all the way. There are plenty of landmarks to guide the way to Emma.

I'd prefer not to have any radio navaids at Emma. When I bush hop in Alaska, the airfields there don't have any radio navaids, and we can still get in. I think it adds to the realism of Emma.

Now I would like to see a bit more runway added though. And a seaplane float added to Hood Canal.

    brad.

  4. I cut my teeth or wings in a J3, for real The only time it was a handful was in valley's with up and down drafts, it was a plane that "you" flew or it would have it's way with you. As for Bill's Cub I have no trouble with 80 plus miles per hour, but it takes time to climb!. I also don't have trouble trimming it as long as I use either the usb stick by Saitek, if I use the CH yoke and it's buttons I have the same problem of up and down??? If you need a break from the stick just hit the "Z" key and it will stabalize, and give you a break. The plane is only about 600 Lbs. in real life so it does get chucked around a bit. " IT IS AS IT IS" that's why we fly those kinds of aircraft, I have heard of guys flying old planes with a bag of sand to trim it level, slide it back and forth, when the gas run low in the tank the balance changes, just slide the bag forward.. trim tabs what are those?

    Hi BIll,

That must have been a fun way to learn to fly. I cut my teeth on ultralights. I used to take the ultralight up flying, and get caught in a rain squall moving through (We get a few of these here in the Pacific Northwest). My seat, which was a plastic bucket seat, would literally fill up with water! When I would bank or pitch down water would slosh out. And when I landed it was pretty amusing to the people around to see me get out of that water-filled seat...... We used to take them up close to some cloud bases, near the leading edge, and kill the engines. There was enough lift from wind going over the cloud that it would hold us up there for 15 - 20 minutes at a time.....so quiet and peaceful. However, one you broke that life barrier, you dropped like a rock while trying to get your engine started.... :D

Interesting that you have the pitching problem with the CH yoke. I'm using a Logitech Freedom joystick, and while I have the CH yoke also it's packed away from a move I just completed. Sounds like the pitching problem maybe joystick/yoke related.

I've been coming into Emma and hit the thermals and the Cub and danced a little bit up there. :) Thats fun and adds to the reasons to fly this type of plane.

Thats excellent on trimming the Cub. Sure show how sensitive they can be, being as light as they are.

    • Bill mentions in his readme.txt that you can use flaps.
After rotating, keeping the airpspeed at 70 knots, it doesn't seem to climb above 300 ft/min. Is this expected?
Once on level flight, it doesn't want to stabilize. It's constantly climbing and descending, in small amounts; pitching up and down. I have to manually correct this, and so flying for a bit gets very tiring. It's almost like being on a sailboat, taking waves on the bow.
Again, once in 'level' flight, I can't seem to get the airspeed above 80 knows. even with full throttle, though the readme.txt states it can cruise at 90+ knots....

Other than what I've mentioned above, I really like this little aircraft!

    thanks,

    brad.

    howdy brad,

first, i am assuming that before you climb into the cub you have set trim to be stable. i usually have my default c182rg flight set with trim-set, etc.

as to climbout: she will not climb fast. she's a slow-&-low craft. i have a problem maintaining above 50 when i climb more than the standard 600 fpm.

the j3 cub has NO FLAPS. the pa18 supercub 180 has flaps but not the j3.

the flaps bill lyons mentions in the accompanying text is for the sailboat that was also placed in your flightsim by this package. the flaps control the sails. so your statement about the cub being like a flying sailboat is pretty much to the point of accuracy.

the thing about the cub is that she is tough and maneuverable for those who want to learn how to hand-fly a machine. no autopilot. so if you have a forcefeedbk stick, like i do, and have muscular probs with their hands, like i do, then it is going to be some work flying the j3. add to that real weather and lago's "air file pro" and you will have some work on your hands (no pun intended!).

she's a fine bird. tiring but fine.

don't let this little bird get you down. just maintain your trim and you'll pick up some speed. i usually cruise at 90.

if you ever get your hands on trying one in real life take it! it's a kick. better yet, if you ever get a chance to be in one in the alaskan bush area, take it, provided the pilot is really qualified to handle her otherwise ....

    cheers,

    don efc136 / cub03

    Hey, Don

I too have a habit of trimming to neutral, or T.O. trim depending on the aircraft, and so do that with the Cub tho its hard to see when its neutral trim as I can't see a trim indicator.

Coming out of Emma, I can't get even 600 feet/min. It averages about 200-300 at most. I've tried airspeeds between just above stall up to about 75 knots. I know its the pilot.....

Ahh, so the flaps are for the sailboat.....makes sense. I didn't think the Cub had them but when its in print.... :) I tend to suspect the pilot before I do the aircraft....

If I could find a way to stop the sudden pitch breaks, the rest would fall into place. As I mentioned in a previous post to azflyboy, she will be climbing slow and steady, and without warning she will pitch down pretty hard. And she is nowhere near stall and it happens too often to be wind related; it's almost contunious. Sometimes I'll be pulling back on the stick and she'll be rotating smoothly, then she'll suddenly pitch up pretty hard and will stall if I don't react quick enough.

I do think part of the it is just spending 'quality time' with the Cub.

You know, just up the road from me a bit is a place the has different types of aircraft that you can hire for rides around the country side. There is a Cub sitting there that they don't use for the rides; it belongs to one of the pilots there and it never/rarely gets flown. I stopped there the other day and took a look through her. She's looks to be in good shape, except for the port side window which wouldn't stay up.... :) I might approach them to see about a ride in it. And to top it off, they have their own runway, which is a dirt strip that runs alongside a railroad track...pretty classic.

Anyway, thanks for the info and anything else you can think of I'd love to hear about.

    brad

  5. I think I have a solution for your problems, so here goes...

    1. As far as I know, the J-3 has NO flaps. I think the statement in the readme must have slipped in erroniously.

I thought that was the case, but had to check with someone who knows more about this bird. A Dash 8 I can throw around the sky..... :)

2.First, turn automixture ON (the engine wil produce more power this way) secondly, the climb performance depends on the altitude at which your aircraft is at so that could explain the performance lagging. (try flying at PHNL)

Ahhhh, hadn't thought of the Automixture. I'll give that a try.

    3. I think the Cub is supposed to wander around in cruise. You can stop that by using the trim and power together to eliminate(or at least reduce) the pitching.

Yep, wandering I can deal with. It's just the slow pitch up, then the sudden break to pitch down (and vice versa also) that wears me out. It'll be climbing slow and steady (at about 70 knots), then suddenly it will pitch down and I have to scramble to catch it. Also sometimes it will suddenly pitch up and I have to correct before it stalls....

    Thanks for the info!

    brad

  6. Based on everyone's great recommendations of Bill's Cub, I purchased and downloaded it. However, as my experience with the Cub is rather limited, I thought I'd bounce a few questions off y'all.

    • Bill mentions in his readme.txt that you can use flaps. However, they don't seem to be visually modelled nor have any effect when fully deployed. Do the flaps make that much difference on the performance/handling of the Cub?
After rotating, keeping the airpspeed at 70 knots, it doesn't seem to climb above 300 ft/min. Is this expected?
Once on level flight, it doesn't want to stabilize. It's constantly climbing and descending, in small amounts; pitching up and down. I have to manually correct this, and so flying for a bit gets very tiring. It's almost like being on a sailboat, taking waves on the bow.
Again, once in 'level' flight, I can't seem to get the airspeed above 80 knows. even with full throttle, though the readme.txt states it can cruise at 90+ knots. I've played with the mixture to see if I can eek a bit more speed, but no luck.

So, perhaps those with more experiece with this aircraft can shed some light on my 'troubles'.

Other than what I've mentioned above, I really like this little aircraft!

    thanks,

    brad.

  7. thanks mustang.

in process of rebuilding system from complete teardown. should be all ready for fs mp by 2315 ZULU. now 2234 ZULU.

    will post result.

    thanks again, man,

    don efc136 / cub03

If EFFC needs a backup server for hosting MP, I'd be glad to offer one out of my server farm. It's currently configured with FSHOST, and bandwidth is not a problem.

    brad.

  8. Okay, as a goodbye present from The Navman, here are some pics of Courchevel then.... will bring back new ones when I get back !! Cheers all !!

Check out the tobaggan run on the hillside in the background! Those are absolutely a lot of fun! WHen I lived in Europe some years past, I'd make a point of trying to find them....

It's kinda like taking off from Courcheval, only longer! :D

    brad.

  9. hey fdx,

yep, a few of us here in the simforums. i think there's even a few who are effc members.

next time you get the monthly assignments you'll see me listed.

    i am tca2882

    cheers my caribbean flying brother,

don efc136 / cub03 / tca2882) / also SOAR521 (very proud of my diamond certificate there! hard work)

Hehehehe! Totally excellent! I'm tca3056 and fairly new to TCA. I needed to get some real flying in, after flying the heavies on international routes for a while. Also some warmer weather as I also flew the hops into outback Alaska....good bush flying but nippy when doing the pre-flights... :)

    brad (FDX1356 / EFFC356 / TCA3056)

  10. Francois, I didn't know you were a sailor. I have been sailing for over 30 years and I lived aboard for 4 years on an Irwin 37 Ctr Cockpit and worked as a delivery skipper. Ironically I learned GPS on the boat long before the planes I flew had it installed...I find Dead reckoning in a plane is so much harder than a Boat because of the speeds involved.

    Hey Ken and Francois,

I too am hooked into sailing. I just recently sold my Beneteau Oceanis 38' sloop, tho now I wish I hadn't as I'm stuck on dry land at the moment.... ;(

    brad

  11. Don,

It's an upgrade 'feature' built into FS2002. Your copy 'knows' that another version is soon to be available, and so it starts on its path of making you so frustrated you WILL upgrade to the new version.

    Pure speculation, of course.....

  12. That's the one that comes with FS2004. That is also where you can get it... eventually

Very excellent, indeed. Yet another reason to wait with trembling joystick.... :D

Are there some other good ones for FS2002? Good flight model, good panels, good paint......?
