  1. I wrote this post in the middle of another thread, all with input from the forum users, and people started saying it should be made sticky or added to the knowledge database.

I can't do that, but at least here it is on top of a new thread. I'll keep updating it with everyone's input and tidbits I gather here and there. If you can make it sticky or moved to a more useful place be my guest :D

    Hello everyone,

First off, thanks for all the replies! Here's a list I compiled and researched after what you told me; hope it can be useful in some way. If there's any interest and more replies come along I will keep this list updated.

Off all the packs listed, Blender, 3D Canvas and AC3D seem that may do the all in one trick at affordable prices (or totally free as Blender).

    Ok, here goes...!

  2. I tried VS last night on my wife's laptop....

Resolution was 1280 * 800 and I was getting 30fps on the low end and 60fps on the upper end    The screen with this wide resolution made it all even more beautiful! top notch image and performance...

...now what am I gonna do with my "state of the art" PC?

  3. I think a lot of keyboard shortcuts are gone now. You can lock/unluck them still through the sails interface screen.

Pieter thanks, I see it now. But do you press them to lock or to release? It always says free

RBauer, rgr that on the new G(raphics) U(ser) I(interface) :D Visually I liked all the previous ones better though the functionality of this one, with the tab separators, is much better now.

  4. SabreHawk,

The night environment is definitely one of the most amazing things I always noticed on VS. Haven't tried it much lately since 2.0, though... When I started playing with the VS demos, back in version 5 - I still have that demo, btw :D - I think I was almost always driving boats at night!

...perhaps, perhaps Ilan could add a slider to options menu to control the sky luminosity, just like he did to the ocean brightness and colors! What do you think? :)

  5. Hi Alan,

I'm running a Sparkle GeForce FX 5600 Ultra 256 Megs. That's was quite a cheap card and the result was that after some time I had to replace the cooling fan for a universal kit (for those tunning things) that really improved the overal performance of the card.

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 running on a Pentium IV, 2.66 Ghz, 512 RAM; On my NVidia control panel I have the settings for a 1024 x 768 res at 75 Hz refresh rate, color quality to 32 bit, performance to "Image Quality".

When I run Flight Simulator I switch the antialiasing settings and the anisotropic filtering to "Application controlled" as FS can handle those internally, and when running VS I set both parameters to 4x each, as they DO really improve image quality! VS does not seem to have any switches to control antialiasing and anisotropic filtering internally.

About 128/256 cards: As much as I know those should be matched to the rest of the PC configuration. As in, if you're running a low end PC, a 256 card will increase even more the load on the CPU and so you will actually get a better performance with a 128. I didn't know this when I bought my system

I guess we should also turn into the equation the Harddisk access speeds, but I don't have my numbers right now.....

What I'm trying to say is, the key is in the balance of all the components and not that much on a single piece of hardware alone.

I just compared the Gipsy Moth again to the default Sailboat:

BEST SPEED > ANTIALIASING ANISOTROPIC OFF / ON

    Gipsy Moth > 32 / 25

    Sailboat > 32 / 32

BEST QUALITY / ANTIALIASING ANISOTROPIC OFF / ON

    Gipsy Moth > 17 / 15

    Sailboat > 25 / 19

Odd numbers, but that's what I'm getting :)

To cut it short, my Gipsy Moth Lite runs from 15 to 32 fps.

    Hope it helps!

    Failed to load drag.wav

About all those "failed to load" messages I think that I'm missing some files at those particular locations; for instance I have loads of dial.x files but not at these particular folders. So my questions are...

Is dial.x always the same file? May I copy it into the mentioned folders? The drag.wav I don't have, though :? Anyone having the same messages?

    Thanks a bunch!

  7. Here's the site I use to check the various timezones/daylight saving status.

    http://times.clari.net.au/

And a specialized one where we learn, among other stuff, the proper spelling, lol

    http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b.html

As for the "Set time to Now" button, it simply replicates your PC clock data so if you are currently observing DS it will load it into VS. Now, as Charlotte said, the program won't check where you actually have placed your boat. So you will have *your* time wether you're sailing the Artic Circle or the Equator :) But that is kinda cool, too.

    Looking into tomorrow!

    This....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diomede_Islands

    and this....

    ALASKA RUSSIAN TIME CHANGE

Travel across the International Dateline from Nome, Alaska to Chukotka Region, Russia and set your watch 21 hours ahead!

Bering Air passengers lose a day when they cross the International Dateline going over, and gain a day when they come back. For example, 10 a.m., May 1 in Nome, is 7 a.m. May 2, in Provideniya.

When you communicate with Russians about your travel plans, remember to specify which country's times and dates you mean.

  8. Alan, as Chaplin said...

"Use it only for what you wish"the screenshot :D I think I still have a 800*600 version if you want it.

As for VS, it has a lot of things that would turn it into a mainstream program. Not sure if we wouldn't feel some nostalgia afterwards  BUT, all the best to VS and this wonderful Gipsy Moth! I'm still a rookie sailor - is there any word for a rookie sailor? - and to be learning in the Moth is a thrill.
