Whenever we think MP we think FSHost and similar MP servers/sessions. I'd like to throw Vatsim ( http://www.vatsim.net )into the option pool.
For those not familiar with VATSIM, it is a larger network that combines online ATC and flying. The only main drawback is that trying to fly formation can be a bit tricky due to slower updates of other users positions. The newest connection method improves this through a option for "formation flying" updates. Haven't tried it so I don't know how well it works.
At any rate, Squawkbox( http://www.squawkbox.ca ) is a utliity that acts as the go-between for the user and the VATSIM network. It installs in 3-5 minutes and takes care of what other users will look like and voice traffic as well. Voice traffic is handled user-user as well as user-ATC frequencies.
Now here's the real benefit. Visabilty! Others will know we're there! At any point in the US evening there are 200+ users online. Most pilots are boring big iron flyers and always will be. But when there's a group of folks gathered at one area others ALWAYS wander over to see what's up. Most of them are looking for something better to do than what they've been doing. If you were to start a virtual airline and fly only on MP servers you could expect X amount of interest and growth. Everything else being equal on VATSIM you could expect many times faster growth.
I've heard before that having ATC around would be a nuisance. But in the past 14 months I've never seen any ATC in the Misty or Tongas area that would interfere with the fun of good ol' fashion VFR traffic.
I think this would solve two key issues.
1: It would give us a low maitenence online place to gather. [Vatsim is free. They pay for & do all the upkeep on the software & hardware for the servers]
2: It would greatly add to the number of online simmers that participate in bush flying. This would help us in forming a larger and more consistent group of friends that love the bush.
I hope you'll agree. If you get into Vastim you may find me in the SE AK area. I almost always will have my message placed in the comments of my flightplan, "If ya' ain't doin' in the bush, it may be ya ain't doin' it right!"
There a small utility, Servinfo ( http://avsim.com/hangar/utils/servinfo/ ), that will allow you to see what going on in the Vatsim world. It's an easy download and install.

Okay, One more try to add the attatchment. Guess they may beed to be an allowed extension type, which KMZ file aren't.

Hmm did something wrong with the attachment....

Coincidently I saved some locations off of Google Earth tonight. I came here to post the the files that will take you there.

I was toodling up Yes Bay and saw some carabou in the water. They were lifting their heads up and down. Cool touvh I liked it:) But I think that is the type of animation I'm looking to creat only more mobile.
A week after registering I got a reply back from scenerydesign.org. Hopefully they can head me in the right direction as well.

I"m not sure what's meant by "copilot". Is it a similar program? FSNet works well with FSHost. Any lag on the server will be reflected though. Typicaly that is seen by the copilot seeing the plane jump 1 second ahead of him for a flash or two. I've not expoerienced that in quite some time though.
The only other drawback is that aircraft that use non standard MS conventions for controls will not signal accross the FSNet network. A case in point would be the PMDG systems. Two persons that are onboard would both have access to simple functions such as manual flight controls. But with the advanced AP and FMC systems neither pilot will see changs made by the other and only the active pilot changes will take effect. I don't think the co-pilot can even alter the lights:)
I'm sure these issues can be addressed with standardations in the future. But in the mean time if you think a cross wind landing in your Cessna is exhiltering at Emma now. Try it riding along as your buddy is a the controls. It's a WOW!
My freakiest thus far has been with a buddy who like aerobatics in the military jets. Nap of the earth through the mountains around Emma field from the RIO seat. I felt real nausea barrel rolling.
Give it a try.

Don't remember how got the address before for the FSHost server. What is it?

I agree that animated effects of AI are a benefit.
With the FlyTampa KSEA scenery from overhead there are 50-70 ground vehicles moivng around at any moment. The scenery is terribly easy on frame rates. Even better than other airports I've seen with no aninmations.
I'm never been to AK but I imagine on a nice summer Sunday afternoon some of those waterways have tons of boats. I thinking for example Ketecan (sp) should have about 100 boats within 10 miles.
I have the dynamic package you mentioned. I though it was just info for creating AI Boats. I will look at it agian.
Thanks for your response!

Any idea on how to learn about creating moving scenery? I want to fill up the waters with a realistic level of boats. I'm afraid if I put too many boats in the water using AI boats that it will hamper frame rates too much.
I saw the FlyTampa scenery tonight. It has ground vehicles moving around the roads and on the tarmac. I assume it's "dymanic scenery" but I saw a post that made me wonder if that's correct.
I guess another advantage to this method over AI is it would be visible during multiplayer seesions.

I've spend a few hours with it. It's a blast to ride with someone. Sure can learn a lot fast. Too bad it doesn't work with the PMDG planes.

Amen to your remarks about the "rules" on VATSIM. I don't spend much time there anymore, just enough to keep up quals with the vUSN. When online I'm usually at airflyers.net but that's been dragging lately.
BUT here was my thought process.....
-The AK area is manned by ATC only 8-10 hours a week it seems.
-The ATC guys like to deal with IFR. ( VFR stuff is beneath them ya' know:) )
-Most bush flying takes no aid from ATC, so what does it matter if they are there or not?
An example of a typical gathering of 4-10 vUSN fpr a couple hours....we'd have 5-10 others come by to see what was up and join in to some extent. Rarely did we get the juvenile minded and acting user that come by on FSHost and Teamspeak too often.
I wasn't able to get into the MF FSHost session. I agree, FSHost sessions are vastly superior to creating buddy groups. But everytime we got lotsa folks on (>12) we had issues with lag and overall poor performance. And that FSHost server was running on a corporate level server.
It's just a thought I had. I know running a FS server can be time consuming at times.
I'm really enjoying MF, unfortunately most my buddies are into the IFR and military. I'm looking forward to meeting other MF users.

I see the online thing hasn't picked up. Another option that will inveribly attract more customers err fellow flyers is VATSIM.
The Squawkbox 3 software is the module the connects FS to VATSIM and is really easy to use. When in controlled airspace the ATC is a real as it gets. Those guys are really into the ATC simming. But for most of MF flying ATC shouldn't be a factor if you don't want it to be.
I fly with the vUSN and we pretty much have free rein in our military areas.
And it's FREE to everyone.
http://www.vatsim.net to register as a pilot.
http://www.anchorage-center.org/ is folks to ask about ATC in the area. There's a forum link there.

I am suprised there haven't been floats added to the default cessna's. The Beaver is nice but it's too tipsy when taxing along a crosswind. I've added modern avionics but they don't appear in the VC which is where I like to fly from.

So many times I've heard FS Nav refered to as the ONE FS add-on to get if you can pay for only one.
I believe it! Mine was free. But I would have paid for it as I use it ALL the time.
If it were to "go out of business" would be a sad day for FS.
another MP option

>Getting people onto the servers is probably the most valid problem.
The current version of Squawkbox is all but hassle free. Connection problems have all but been eliminated. There are still router configuation issues with some users. Misconfigurations cause less hassle on VATSIM then with other connection methods.
Remember folks we won't need any ATC, & there isn't any ATC in Alaska on VATSIM for the most part. The big benefit is that it is a high exposure uniform place for us to fly online. And none of us, whether users or vendors, need to maintain the network. We just connect and fly.
