FS2004 versus FSX-(not a FScene issue)

When I first installed FScene X it caused FS2004 to crash to desktop with a terrain.dll error. I have succeeded in preventing this by turning off autogen in the FS scenery. Obviously this means that I see no buildings etc. which is not good. It's also strange because the publicity for FScene says that it works with autogen.
Has anyone else experienced this and did they manage to resolve it?
I am using the onboard video on my PC; maybe that is not powerful enough?
