  1. Turns out, she does have a compass, no radio or other electronic goodies.

She also does not have any holding tanks except for a 65 gallon fuel tank.

This is not good as I plan to mostly live aboard at an anchorage/mooring ball (as this is far cheaper than staying at a marina...). To do thus, the boat would have to have at least some septic holding tanks and likely also some water tanks.

She's a beautiful boat, but I think I'm gonna have to look elsewhere as it would require far to much money to get her ready (something about a radio, antenna, mounts if needed, and at least two tanks...).

All in all some sad news here...:(

  2. Well, I got to see the boat I'm lookin' at in person today. She's beautiful and just the right size. It does look like I'd have to buy a VHF radio and some other electronics before I go cruising the world though (radio first at least...and a compass). For the price though she appears to be a good deal. I'm definitely gonna think on this. If I decide to go for her I'll contract a good marine surveyor to look her over to see what may be wrong with her.

  3. I'm once again working on some scenery of my local area.

I'm using the Version 2 SRTM data that (I think it was) Ron provided a link to.

Although there's no noise from waves VS keeps cutting off part of the land (k_alt is ~7.6) which makes the residents of Coranado rather unhappy as they find that they need scuba gear to live there now...

I just need to take the SRTM data and bump it up a few feet to get some of the lowlying land back...

I will likely also need assistance in creating the depth.bmp as I want it to be accurate...

Well here in New York there is a free publication called 'Boat Trader' or something similar where people can post what they have for sale. The same goes for Cars and Employment opportunities in other like magazines. You can find them in supermarkets and gas stations, maybe you should look for a similar magazine the next time your out so you can get another perspective on what’s available in your area.

Uh, TLAM, we have the Boat Trader here as well. the url I posted is for their website.

A rather small sailboat isn't what I'd call the best place to have your comp, dude...

Like, there's nowhere you can plug it in to and I'd be a bit worried having water everywhere.

Now if you were talking a huge motor yacht then it'd make more sense but a sailboat isn't the best place to have a comp... actually you wouldn't have time with it anyway as you'll be busy with steering and working with the sails!

    /Jonatan

I wasn't planning on using it or even having it plugged in while underway, but seeing as I'd likely be in port for awhile I figured it'd be good to have something I could set up my comp on.

  6. I'm currently doing some research into the possibility of buying a boat and I was hoping to get some insight from actual sailors (and other people with experience in the area).

I'm looking for a sailboat that has space for myself and perhaps one guest. One of the most important parts here is...it has to have a place for me to set up my computer.

I anticipate quite a bit of uproar from the actucal sailors in this community after the following statement.

I plan to live-aboard while learning to sail (and getting all the required licenses and certifications) and getting myself set up financially so that I can start sailing around a bit around the world. This plan would likely have me living aboard for a few months at least.

Any suggestions on what type of sailboat I ought to be looking for (length as well)? I'm currently looking for boats on http://www.boattraderonline.com and am looking within 25 miles of zip code 92105 (these details are provided if anyone cares to help me hunt or provide links to some suggested boats).

As to price...lower is usually better (provided the boat is in good condition) and I'd obviously have to finance it.

Thanks in advance for any assistance, badgering, or outbursts (good or bad, just remember the forum guidelines).

  7. I will consider it in about a week (after the internet bill gets paid).

I really wish I could run a VS server without having to deal with all the 3d stuff when I want to do something else (such as use FS2004).

My computer gets all wierd when I try having it do too many 3d things at once (and besides, the fps would be horrible...).

One of the main reasons I took the VS server down before was (aside from the amount of dust it was collecting) that I wanted to do something else that required directx/opengl (and would have a fit if VS remained open).

  8. I don't remember the Ark Royal having that ramp at the front...or being that small...or using gas turbine engines...coulda sworn it burned oil for the boilers...

Of course, the Brits might have decommissioned her and built a new one since WWII...I don't keep up on that as much as I should...

*wants to see someone model the Ark Royal as she appeared in WWII*

Also, using boolean adds far too many verticies and faces to the model. Lemme see about diggin up the thread in which cigdriver explained to me how to do it properly...

  9. Alright, I got them to match and it now has much better handling when diving and using the planes, however I noted that while surfaced, even 12 foot waves barely washed over the top deck. IRL waves like that would toss the sub around like a tin can.

Of course I was using the Guppy (and simulating an emergency surface after having dove to over 450 feet) and was expecting to be tossed around like a tin can (as with real boat scale checked). But alas it barely had any pitching up/down moments...

As for the animation, I kinda agree, I think there's no current way to keep the animation, anyone tried? My current way (Gmax -> .md3 -> .3ds -> .x) will surely make my animation attemps futile...

Jonathan this should in theory work, the md3 files are from quake3, they were animated, as long as the md3-3ds converter will convert the animations you should be good.

I did play a bit with the pilots today, Ilans files use jointed models, but I wanted to try one with smooth skin, I have not yet got it to work completely, but I could get my bone structure into VS and it moved like it should. I did a little research, and 3ds files don not support bones, but it looks like I can export an .ase file which will flatten the bone transorms creating an animated mesh, which can then be reimported, only to be exported once again, lol. I'm going to play with it a bit more, I'll post any sucesses I have.

It looks like there is no limit to the animations length, but there are certain "events" that trigger them such as throttle changes, steering, reefing, and a few others. There does apear to be an idle animation that you can just have loop when any of the others are not playing, so that might be of use for a flag. The frames to play for each event are specified int eh pilotX.cfg file, if you do not list frames for an event your pilot will not do anything, so you can have a helmsman and a seperate throttleman.

Ah... I see. Hmm, the steering animation, perfect! Jon the Fox could actually steer the Minnie now. :D And the throttle animation... Sears could answer the calls down in the engine room by changing the controls.... Idle animations... boiler room stokers, the Minnies chef, deckhands walking about teh decks, crew members down in the crews quaters polaying a game of cards... oh yeah! :D But how would you placee them on the boat?

Once I get this straight I'll toy around a bit.

    /Jonatan

Jon, remember that all those animated crewmen and objects are gonna drop the framerate a bit...so don't use too many...

Oh, and don't you just love nested quotes? :P

  11. I've always noted that the depth was measured in meters, not feet (unless using one of TLAM's gauges or the GPS, or the original depth gauge made by Ilan...). The echosounder and the depth noted in the ballast controls (and such tied to that variable) has always been in meters for me (even though my computer and the gauges and gps use feet).

I'm not trying to use the planes when there is a wake or two on the surface (while in motion) as VS doesn't consider the sub submerged until this disappears (thus having the entire sub underwater), so they have no effect while "surfaced".

As for measuring what 52 feet is, I use either the gauge or the gps, not the figure on the ballast controls.

I always play with Real Sea Scale checked and have no idea why anyone would play without it. I'll have to give it a try without (and alter the configs for my boats so they turn properly again...).

in VS, and for the Guppy in particular... i usually flood down to 56% and let 'er slowly take on depth... at about 52 feet keel depth the dive planes become effective, and i give 'er a little down angle, and nuetralize the bouyancy...

when i arrive at ordered depth, i level off and check to see if there needs to be any further adjustment of the ballast... i usually have to tap it a bit, just this side of 49% for a level trim...

it takes a lil practice... but i've managed to hold depth to within 10 feet for over a half hour once i've got it set right...

    --Mike

Usually when I set it to 56% it sinks like a stone and so she sinks well past 52 feet before I can "neutralize" the ballast again. Can you tell I prefer to use the planes for depth adjustment?
