  1. Just got back fro Malta, where I saw this sight. When it got closer I can tell you that the superstructure is firmly attached to the 'barge' and that there were curtains etc in some windows.

Anyone ever seen one of these??

If you have, what are they? Floating and 'moveable' flats? Temporary housing for workers? A new floating continent??

  2. That framerate difference is so large that either

    a) Ilan has made a boo boo and left debugging code in,

    b) You have something different set (waves look smaller and tighter together in 6.8 screeny)

    c) Something else I cannot think of.

It is strange that I cannot replicate this - please could you send me the CFG files for the startup of VS - because I am interested in things like this.

  3. I may be wrong here, but the 'gramaphone' thing is actually a communication method to the engine room (or anywhere else come to that). It was simply a tube (although it did I think have some acustic properties) which had a cone at each end.

It allowed the captain and who ever was at the other end to shout at each other - primitive, but effective communication.

  4. Eight bit sound files are/were quite noisy, but the hiss shouldn't be introduced when you go from 16 down to 8 - the other way around and I would expect it, but not 16 to 8. If you want, send it to me (is it big??).

I have a digital recording studio at home and can convert audio thingies to any other format you want and apply some noise deadening filters for you.

How are you currently reducing the bit count by the way?

  5. I have just been given a new laptop from work, and so have de-installed the old VS (6.7) and moved it onto my new laptop. I now cannot run it as it wants a new key. So I go to the web site, put all my information in and hit GO, and the system tells me that I cannot get a key because I purchased the system too long ago - BUT the system was working on my old machine.

I know that Ilan is away, but is there a way round this - I cannot run the programme due to all the extras (demo only runs with some scenaries etc).

My old machine is not here anymore - I have no way of playing VS!! Please can someone help me.

    Thanks in advance...

  7. Hi there,

I am almost certain that this is not possible for a number of reasons. Firstly, the accuracy of the areas created may be 'suspect' - they are created loveingly but quite possibly fall a few (!) nautical miles from where they should be.

Secondly, real GPS has chart datums which differ dramatically across the globe (I have very unfortunately come across this in real life), and these are not stored in VS. These are just two reasons - must be many more.

As far as the actual GPS data, it is simply a NMEA feed in text format, and there are a thousand free utilities out there to read them and display them on your computer - so IF anyone decided to do this, it wouldn't be a massive undertaking.

Just thought - wouldn't it be good if we could write plugins for VS - I would gladly write the GPS interface if there was a hook for me to plug into out there...
