  1. I have just purchased FSX. The first thing I want to do is get advice on a controller. Or simply how to control the aircraft. Is virtual cockpit the most realistic method? CH yoke and pedals? Saitek systems?

    I will be taking actual lessons soon and would like to use the sim for practice and plane familiarity purposes. Can someone with real life flight experience give me some direction?

    I will be in C-152's to start due to cost (but I see FSX does not have this plane) but will be switching to the 172 later in the training.

    Thank you in advance for any help you can offer to me.

    Jeff Mishler

    I recommend using the sim for initial familiarization but not using it during the period between your first hour of dual and solo. After solo, you can again use the sim for instrument familiarization and procedures as well as coincident with your cross country training.

    The reason I recommend NOT using the sim before solo is that during that period it's critical that you become completely familiar with the control PRESSURES vs response required to handle the specific aircraft in which you are training. Using the sim can actually be detrimental to you during the pre-solo period.

    Bottom line is that the sim is quite useful for specific purposes during your training but can be detrimental in the pre-solo phase.

    It's also important that you learn to fly using nose attitudes and visual references OUTSIDE the airplane. This is also a critical part of your pre-solo training and not optimized in the simulator.

    If you have a moment, please reference the article I did on this issue. You can access the article on Simflight's main page right hand margin where you will find a link.

    Best of luck with your training.

  2. Ben & Jerry's Caramel Choo Choo here... Gotta keep it free of "may contain traces of nut" for Techgirl... ;)

    Mmmm. Chocolate *in* icecream. Sorted.

    How the finagling mallard did this thread get to where it has!?! :roll::lol:

    Ian P.

    I think it all started when Francois and I got bored looking for something to do with ourselves between tutorials and motorcycle tourists.

    Naturally, both of us being aware that good health begins with eating something daily from each food group , we chose accordingly....chocolate and vanilla!

    :-)

  3. This is not fair. You've now made me want ice cream and it's quarter to eleven at night!!! :roll:

    Mind you, the idea of Francois charging into battle against the Cardinal's hordes on a Moose is quite amusing. ;)

    Ian P.

    You might as well give up and join us. Francois and I take turns edging each other into the nearest ice cream parlor. :-))

    I think I've gained ten pounds since I've known Francois.

    He hasn't said anything yet, but I'm guessing he'll need a bigger bike fairly soon :-))

  4. On a new FS9 install last night I noticed I couldn't register using the new address. I'm assuming this is normal as your server must have the old one stored

    I don't have a Server, and in any case FSUIPC doesn't go on-line. The email address you used when you purchased the Key is irrevocably tied with your name to the Key. The three go together as a totally unique tracable identification. The actual email address doesn't matter as it isn't used for email, only to identiy you. Folks with no internet connection would use the first line of their address, for instance.

    Is there a way to change to the new address, or for all future reinstalls of FS9 using my FSUIPC should I just use the old address to register it?

    You must ALWAYS use exactly the same details as notified to you when you got the Key. Not just the email address but your name too, to the letter. It does say this someplace.

    Regards

    Pete

    Thank you.

    DH

  5. Hi Pete;

    Got a question;

    Naturally I'll be purchasing and registering a new FSUIPC for FSX, but my question deals with my existing registered version for use in FS9.

    We've changed email addresses since I first registered my FSUIPC. On a new FS9 install last night I noticed I couldn't register using the new address. I'm assuming this is normal as your server must have the old one stored, and FSUIPC did register when I used the old email address and code.

    Is there a way to change to the new address, or for all future reinstalls of FS9 using my FSUIPC should I just use the old address to register it?

    Thanks

  6. I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for your generous offer of textures to the FS9 sim community. Your work is beautiful and doing what you did was very kind of you. I personally enjoy your work and have recommended it on many occasions.

    All the very best to you, and looking forward to the FSX era with you.

  7. Assuming I don't want to be changing axis lines or slopes or anything like that, is there any advantage or disadvantage for that matter, in either deleting the CH Manager and using fsuipc to calibrate all the flight controls, or should I just use fsuipc to tweak the throttle and leave the CH Manager in the system as before?

    Sorry, I have no idea. Not having any CH gear nor, of course, the CH manager, I am not in a position to judge whether it does anything better or not. If no one else chips in with advice or experiences maybe you should visit Bob "Sticky" Church's place, http://www.ch-hangar.com.

    Regards,

    Pete

    Thanks Pete;

  8. I have fsuipc 3.60 registered and will be upgrading to 3.65 shortly. Have a question;

    Up untill now, I've always used the CH Manager to calibrate my CH Fighterstick, Throttle, and pedals. Everything has worked fine, and I simply assign buttons and switches in FS9 and don't get into anything fancy with axis' etc.

    I'm testing a new jet fighter for an add on developer and have just solved an issue with the throttle using fsuipc's controller reset settings.

    What has happened is that the developer apparently has used an ICO number lower than the CH Manager sets up, so I couldn't get a firm ICO in the new aircraft. By using fsuipc, and resetting then setting the throttle numbers, I now have the range to get the ICO function I need.

    Here's my question;

    Thank you,

    Hell....I never realized just how good you bushie pilots REALLY are!!!

    I've beeb looking for "Richard's house" now for two days and haven't found it YET!! :-))

    I think I have the problem under control though. It's getting used to how you folks actually do things.

    I think it's a speed thing. You see, the last thing I flew before retiring was an F14. On my last flight, we let down in the unrestricted supersonic corridor at Pax River Naval Air Test Center in Maryland. We let the airplane out to about 1.8mach right over a beautiful stratus layer. It was just at sunset. The visual result at that speed was like watching the light show from the movie 2001. Things were moving pretty fast right under the airplane.

    Now that I've joined you crazy people, I have to get used to doing things a bit slower.......and the navigation is a bit different too!!!

    To find Richard's house the way YOU guys like to fly, I have to let down to 100 feet over the trees........follow the river down to the 3rd bend on the right......let the airplane down a bit lower....."FOR GOD'S SAKE MAN.....LOOK OUT FOR THE DAMN MOOSE !!!!!!".......then look for the only place in the wilderness that couldn't POSSIBLY be a runway........then throttle the engine WAY back and listen closely.........when I can hear the Ice breaking up......or the Racoons breaking wind........THAT'S IT!!!!

    I've FOUND IT!!!!! :-)))))

    Dudley

  10. I haven't noticed any people on this forum visiting Richard's island home...you would need to read the manual pretty carefully to find it. I visited some time ago when beta-testing and took these three shots 8)

    Hello Peter;

    I understand Francios forwarded my comments on Orcas Island to you. It's a wonderful program, and I'm very glad I purchased it. Actually I had just purchased Emma and hadn't even installed that yet when Francios and I managed to get together. Naturally that resulted in my getting Orcas Island. :-)))

    I have your files for the AI traffic and the fuel patch. Thank you for making these available to the community.

    I've been "exploring" a bit off the island and thoroughly enjoying this welcome addition to the simulator. I don't know who put the DC3 in there, but I've had great fun flying close formation with it as it makes it's loop through it's missed approach sequence. Does it ever land BTW? :-)

    I'm almost afraid to admit to you that I haven't managed to find your island home with the Cessna next to the house as yet. I've tried it from both directions and STILL can't see it :-) Your screen shots will help a bit I'm sure.

    I understand you have a fighter background. I have a few hours in them myself. Please feel free to email me anytime.

    All the best,

    Dudley

  11. Just installed Orcas. It's beautiful! Just one question about AI aircraft movement on the field please.

    I'm up and running ok with a clean system and everything's fine graphics wise. Fantastic frame rates at Orcas. No graphical problems at all.

    I have effects and dynamic scenery right side maxed, and AI traffic to 75%.

    I think I've just discovered that I might not be seeing any AI action to speak of because Orcas is a fictitional airport and not part of FS9's AI traffic program....am I right on this?

    I'm getting a DC3 shooting missed approaches on 34 but that's about it. All the aircraft on the field are static only; at least none have moved as yet.

    Am I set up correctly? I'm getting from the manual that I should be seeing at least SOME AI aircraft.

    It's awfully lonely out there!!!! :-)))

    Can anyone fill me in on this?

    Thanks much,

    Dudley

    I just realized I got Orcas mixed up with Emma Field with that "fictional airport" assumption, so please forgive my senior moment there.

    This alters my seeming lack of AI aircraft movement back to a normal level however, as I would think that since Orcas is in fact an actual airport, I should be getting at least some AI traffic normally when I'm there shouldn't I? I am getting the DC3, but none of the planes on the field are moving at all. Would it help to change date and time perhaps?

    Thanks

    Dudley

  13. Thank you very much, Dudley, for your tutorial. I had never read such an informative text on such a much ignored issue.

    My pleasure.

    People on these forums have been a great help to me in learning to enjoy the simulator's possibilities. The very least I can do is offer my experience in return. The result for the most part at least, has been a very pleasant experience for me working within the sim community since retirement.

    Thank you very much for your comment.

  14. Fritz! yer a evil man ye know, that looks so swell and i cant buy it lol :P

    Save ye guinneas and behold, over time thou shallt be wealthy..... and the richess of add-ons will fall upon thou !!

    Or more accurately......

    "Thou shalt seek to hideth thy body from thy wife, lest she turn upon the pages of thou holiest of gospels; thy check book...seeking theirin the answer to the Microsoft parable section Gates....paragraph 98...sentence FS9 that states;

    "Thou shalt attempt explain to the lord almighty or thy wife which are the same, as the sun shall light upon the earth and the stars shall make brilliant the night sky, thy reasoning oh husband and desciple of the anti-angel Gates, that thou shalt spend upon the earth the sum of a three thousand sheckle conputer lest thee to run in thy intimate ageless male wisdom a forty sheckle flight simulator.

  15. Hi Dudley,

    There is in old thread dedicated to the refuelling question, you

    could find that interesting.

    From that you can download a little addon that adds fuel to Emma

    http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?t=5505

    Update!!! I found where to put it after I posted to your initial post. Thanks to you and the talented fellow who was good enough to share his file with us, I now have a nice beautiful Texaco Pump full of 100 LL on the field at Emma.

    Many thanks again

    D

  16. Dudley,

    And don't forget about the fantastic freeware sceneries for the Emma area. They are available at Simon's (http://www.stansco.co.uk/) and Terry's (http://www.virtualpilot.net/) mostly.

    BTW, a scenery that WillyB and I created is named Valley Field. It is real near Emma and has an active fuel zone. Although you can surely use it without Lago's FSE, I recommend that it be another piece of software on your things to get. A lot of freeware developers use it to enhance the area with objects (moving and static) and sounds.

    BTW2, Valley Field (and many other freeware sceneries) require Gerrish's trees to be correctly installed so you don't get the dreaded white blocks where the trees are supposed to be. They are freeware and can be found at most download sites. Search for Trees_v3.zip.

    And mostly... enjoy!

    I'll check all this out, and thanks much

    D
