You can see how wonderful scenery Orcas I is!! :D You notice no need be biased :D

    And I recomend next, GeoRender 3 Diamond Point :D :D :D

It is located between Emma and Orcas :D

    Pilatus_PC6_Porter_DiamondPoint_019_2.jpg

This is wonderful scenery too :D

If you have RealAir's Scout or Aerosoft Beaver then you are one of the happiest guy under the sun :D :D :D me too :D :D :D

I was instructing at Hagerstown Maryland years ago when Fairchild was testing the Porter on the field across from us. It's a wonderful airplane and can do VERY unusual things :-))

Your site is beautiful! It's quite easy to think that some of those screenshots are REAL the aircraft and scenery are that good.

  2. And when flying out of Emma, don't forget Orcas Island... many of the club members have bought it too and use it as their 'day trip' or even holiday destination.

Read all about Orcas Island here: http://www.fsaddon.com/products_preview.html

FSAddon.com (the publisher) is actually.. ummm.... 'Fritz' (aka Francois)... so take this message as being extremely biased !!!

You do nice work Francois! That's a beautiful airport you have there.

I'm sure I'll probably be getting this one as well as soon as I get things sorted out with Emma. I'll probably have to order the CD judging from the size of that download :-))

I've saved the information for later.

  3. Hi Dudley

Create a flight using the go to/select airport with your plane positioned at one of the parking spots (Emma 2004 has an AFCAD supplied so you can select it like any of tthe defaults, Airport ID is KEWL) make sure everything is cold/dark and save your flight. When you load your flight again, go through the start up and when your engine is running Fritz will appear, like a bad penny :) (Need to be in 2D/VC view)

I can tell this thing could easily become addictive :-)) When I get it set up with the Scout, it should make a nice package. Since the Scout has dual capability (water and land) and is equipped with good avionics, the options with Emma should be considerable. I would imagine you will be able to fly out past Cushman on the lake to Bear Gulch and enjoy the bush flying either wet or dry, or take a nice trip over to Seattle and shoot an approach or two over there before coming back to Emma. I guess you can even go out to the field without flying if you want to, go into full screen, and slew yourself all over the field and watch everything that's going on. :-)

What about fuel? I didn't see anything in the manual about gas being on the field. Is there a nearby field you can fly into and load up on fuel, or does everybody just alt into the fuel settings and load up that way?

    Dudley

  4. I haven't even gotten this thing installed yet and it's facinating the heck out of me :-) I've been reading the manual I downloaded. WHAT a program this is!

I have been quite impressed with RealAir's Decathlon, so I bought the Scout last night for Emma. I loaded that today and RealAir has another winner here. I noticed that they included a neat little strip just to the west of where Emma will be. That will be a nice little extra touch of scenery to use and enjoy.

Been reading about Fritz! I'm a little confused as to how you get him out there each time you start up a saved flight at Emma. The manual says to start engines in one of the parking positions and he'll be there to guide you out. I'd like to take the Scout and put it in position cold and dark at Emma and save the flight (not default the flight) at different times and days to get different dynamic scenery results. Where should I put the airplane to get Fritz each time I select that saved flight....in one of those specially marked places in the manual like right in front of the hangar?

In other words, what do I have to do to save a flight and get Fritz the next time I open that flight at Emma?

The more I read about this thing the more interesting it gets. What a wonderful idea they had putting this together. I'm looking forward to seeing it in operation.

  5. Hi Alex,

yes I did try your file. It is indeed less 'twitchy' than the default MSFS Cub. Bill Lyons Cubs are better too in my opinion.

But since I have not flown/taxied a real Cub yet, I can not give you a fair opinion.

I DO know from experience that the Jodel (with a castoring tail wheel) does NOT do anything much with rudder/propwash at low speeds, since it is relatively heavy compared to a Cub, Maule or Husky.

When taxiing on skis we need pretty heavy throttle inputs to make turns (no brakes in the snow) and the turns are relatively wide, indicating not much effect on rudder !

    Hope this helps :)

    Hi Francios;

As you know, I did a little work on the Cub during the beta process for FS9. I noticed the sensitivity immediately and mentioned it to the team. I couldn't adjust it out in the sim controller settings either.

Several of us fooled around with the airplane on various surfaces with different results. I actually had the opportunity of checking the sensitivity with two different controller setups during the beta; first with a reg USB sidewinder and then with a full Hotas Cougar and CH gameport pedal setup.

The Sidewinder was the worst by far. I couldn't control the Cub at all on a hard surface runway with the tailwheel up. This single point was indicative I think, because with the tailwheel down, the Cub could be handled, but it was still very twitchy. With the engine sliders left, it was much easier to control. I remember thinking at the time, and I suggested as well, that the P Factor slider should NOT be having any effect at all after landing with the throttle at idle. The problem was that the Cub was groundlooping hard to the left every time if the tailwheel was off the runway as the airspeed was dissipating during the rollout.

The Cougar was much better. I had it set up then as I do now; in directx mode only, using generic drivers in XP.

The J3 handles much better with this controller and the CH pedals, even on the hard surface. I still feel that tail should be down however, but I've wheel landed the Cub many times without the ground loop problem being present. On grass the situation was much better, but I still had to keep that tailwheel down on the surface after landing.

My guess is that MS did make the Cub a bit too sensitive in yaw at the low speed end of the envelope, but that specific controllers and setups work much better than others.

In the real J3, the brakes are heel actuated and the small pedals are slightly inside the rudder pedals. I hardly ever used them anyway except to check the mags and heat....and even then, your heel keeps slipping off them anyway :-)

The Cub taxies very nicely in RL and is no trouble at all.

  6. From time to time, as has long been my practice in the sim community, I will put together a tutorial on an issue I think might be of some use to my friends who, along with me, enjoy the digital world of flight simulator.

Since I spent a great deal of time during my aviation career checking pilots out in high performance tailwheel airplanes and instructing pilots getting ready to transition into tailwheels, I thought I might pass on to my friends in the sim community a bit of what we used

to stress during checkouts in high performance tailwheel prop fighters. I realize that all of you are into bush flying and as such are dealing with aircraft like the Scout, the Cessna 180, Beaver, and the Porter.

The same things however apply in general to all tailwheel aircraft. The force

magnitude issues and force directions aside, you will be dealing with

the same forces and sight cues in a Decathlon, a Citabria, Cub, or a

Champ or Beaver as you would be dealing with in a Mustang, Griffon Spitfire, or a

    Bearcat.

I'd like to stay away from the "forces" issues and just discuss the

visual sight cues issue if I may please. It's here that a lot of pilots

transitioning into tailwheels need a little better understanding.

First of all, don't be too upset the first time you climb into the

cockpit and look out over the nose. Most everyone's initial reaction, as

the instructor climbs in with you is "Good God! How the hell am I EVER

going to see to fly this damn thing? :-)

Forget it! It's no big deal. You will be using a totally different

visual perspective in flying the tailwheel anyway.

This brings up the first thing you have to realize when dealing with a

tailwheel airplane; and that's where to concentrate your visual cues.

In an airplane where you can see completely over the nose at all times,

your perspective and visual dimensional scan is virtually solved for

you. In a tailwheel airplane, it's a bit different. Usually, the first

thing a new pilot does in a tailwheel is to go into the flight office

and get a cushion off a chair. Sometimes this works for short pilots and

if so, by all means go get one. Taller pilots will usually fit into the

cockpit in such a way that their vision is either on the cowling, or

just a tad over it which is fine; but the average pilot finds themselves

seated with their absolute straight ahead vision slightly hindered by

the nose. This holds true for most of the small tailwheels in use in

general aviation as of now. Of course, in a Pitts, or a P51, the visual

cue issue deepens into it's more complex scenario, but basically, it's

the same issue and the same solution.

Let's just address the visual cues issue for a moment here and come to

an understanding on how to deal with it in a tailwheel airplane.

It's quite simple really once you realize what you have to do. You still

have excellent visual cues available but they are no IN A DIFFERENT

PLACE!!! Instead of the total visual field you are used to in a

nosewheel airplane, you now have TWO separate peripheral references; one

on each side of the windshield lower bow. Think about this for a moment

and mentally visualize it. Your vision is partially blocked straight

ahead, but you have a field of view on BOTH SIDES of the lower canopy

bow. Now, how does this work?

When taxiing, you can instantly see a directional change as the nose

moves into one of those two peripheral fields. You clear the area in

front of you as you gently S the nose from side to side in an equal

angular distance from your desired centerline. It's simple. You marry

your feet to the peripherals and clear the nose each time it's position

offset to your desired track allows you to do so. It's a constant

process of gentle angular change and clearing as you taxi.

    Now for takeoff and landing.

Here, you have a slightly different visual scenario. The object here is

to hold the airplane straight in the 3 point attitude until the nose

comes down in the takeoff, or after the nose comes up on the landing.

Each situation requires you to hold a centerline position with the

PERIPHERAL CUES BALANCED and EQUAL while the forward view is partially

    blocked.

It's not all that hard to do really. One thing to remember that is basic

to all tailwheel operation; and that is, CLEAR first the line where you

intend to point the airplane, then assume clear and transition with the

balanced peripheral sight cues. At first this might seem a bit

frightening, but it isn't really. You MUST however fully understand that

by clearing the line ahead of the airplane, this doesn't mean a cursory

look. It means that you have to develop a heightened sense of what's

happening around you.....runway...taxiways.....the woods next to the

runway......cars.... trucks......anything and everything that might have

time to hurt you in the time the airplane is transitioning either into

the area where you can re-clear, or as in the landing, while you are in

the 3 point attitude using peripheral cues and slowing to a point where

you can re-clear the area ahead of you once again.

This is a very important concept to understand when flying tailwheels.

There are moments in time when the airplane is in transition when it is

vulnerable in the velocity vector. You MUST understand this, and learn

to compensate for it by clearing the area in front of the airplane

BEFORE entering into the vulnerable stage on taxi...takeoff....and

    landing.

In an S1 Pitts for example, you are literally blind after touchdown as

the tail comes down. As the tail settles in, your line on the runway

will be restricted to your ability to hold your peripheral sight cues

equal and balanced. But you are blind straight ahead. You absolutely

MUST clear the nose in front of you BEFORE allowing the tail to come

down in this airplane. You have a downgraded same issue in a Citabria or

Decathlon, (depending on what you're sitting on :-) but not nearly as

    bad as the Pitts.

    The bottom line on visual cues in the tailwheel airplane is simply this;

    1. Accept the side peripherals as PRIME.

    2. CLEAR BEFORE pointing the nose when taxiing.

    3. CLEAR BEFORE power application on takeoff.

    4. CLEAR BEFORE lowering the tail on landing.

    3. Balance and equal the peripherals to hold a straight line when 3

    point.

I sincerely hope these comments will be of use to those of you thinking about purchasing a tailwheel airplane and flying it out of fields like Emma.

    All the best,

  7. I'd like to take the time out of my day to personally thank each and every one of you people for taking the time out of YOUR day to offer help, encouragement, and friendly advice to a newcomer among you.

Before I decided to purchase Emma, I really didn't know much about Simflight. I have had the extreme pleasure of knowing Katy Pluta for some time now however, and I can tell you that KT over time, has been a true friend of mine and from what I've seen here on this forum, completely representative of the type of people all of you are.

I won't make a big deal out of this, but I just wanted you to know that Simflight and it's people are an environment I would recommend to the sim community in a second!

Thank you all for taking a problem and making it into a positive experience; to Francios; WAY above and beyond the normal conception of service, help, and support.

I hope to get Emma loaded and working fairly soon, and I'll be looking forward to discussing things related to flying with all of you here on the forum in the future.

Thanks again for all your interest and help. It was greatly appreciated.

  8. At simMarket you have the option to order it on CD. I don't know about LAGO, I suppose not.

I would suggest to try it WITHOUT using a download manager. This has caused problems before on the LAGO ftp site and it could well be that that is your problem.

Next time, buy from simMarket... you'll get superior support

    Hi Francois;

See the back channel email I sent to you this morning.

You're so right about the support. I had no idea I could purchase the program here. I won't make that mistake again however :-) It's ironic that even though I unwittingly purchased Emma from Lago, all the support has come from Simflight people and friends on the forum anyway!!!! :-))

I can't think of a better example of what REAL support is all about.

  9. dudley,

maybe you could ask someone who lives near you, and who has the ability to download the FULL VERSION emma2004 installer, then burn a copy on a cd & ship it to you. i am certain it will get to you quicker than any company could do. also less aggravating than downloading it from lago on a 56k modem.

    where do you live?

    cheers and best luck

    I'm in Pennsylvania, United States

  10. Dudley,

Sorry to hear what happened. Unfortunately, corrupt files do happen and especially with dial-up. You are right; I suggest that you try D/L’ing it again. I have included the link where I got mine. You did not say where you got your D/L from. I hope you give it a chance. I know how frustrating dial-up can be.

    http://www.lagosim.com/default.asp?act=4〈=eng

Thanks. That's the link where I've tried twice now to download it; once from each mirror. The second time Explorer timed out.

This is going to be a real mess I'm afraid. I didn't tell you that this was the THIRD attempt. My son and I tried to download it from his house earlier tonight. He has a cable modem. It wouldn't download there either.

The download manager opened ok, but the save window for the download never opened. We finally gave up! Then I came home and have spent the last 6 hours trying to get it with a dial up.

    What a mess!!! :-)

  11. Got a serious problem I'm afraid. Can anyone help with info please?

Bought Emma tonight and attempted download. It shows on the desktop as completed at 37megs, which is short I know. When I try and execute the file it says it's corrupted.

Can someone please tell me which server to use, or what to do to solve this. This download took nearly 3 hours, and it's a total waste!

I know you're going to tell me to download it again, but can someone PLEASE tell me if there's anything I can do to keep this from happening again? It's not my ISP; I'm fairly sure of that.

    Dudley

  12. i believe the fullsize is about for a brand new emma field fs2004 is 50 MB (47 mb ?).

something to do in the late hours, i guess, for peops with dialup.

    greatest luck.

Yup!! 50 megs will be a late nighter. In fact, at 56kbs, I should seriously consider emailing everybody now who needs to be contacted in the next two weeks :-)))

    Thanks

    D

  13. Dudley,

you wrote......Thanks. You have brought up a salient point. Do you happen to know if installing Emma the normal way with Lago's executable overwrites existing files that won't be deleted if Uninstalling Emma? I know that Lago leaves in one file that has to be manually deleted, but generally speaking, does installing Emma overwrite files????

At this point, I don't recall. I do know that installing by the method mentioned, you will know if any files are duplicates or being overwriten when you copy them over to the real FS directory.

From what I can gather from the manual, I have to make a backup copy of the scenery.cfg file during the install...that seems to be it I think.

    Thanks again

  14. quick answer to the overwrite issue: NO!

    well, not really.

it does add itself to the scenery.cfg file. it places itself (and the necessary "common" directory) as the first directories (at the top) of your scenery library.

other than that your system is as pristine as you had it prior to emma field.

That's great news. I'm going over to Lag and see if I can find that manual for Emma. That should supply a whole lot of information without bugging you guys to death :-)

  15. in response to your situation query:

if you save a situation (BUT DONT USE IT AS A DEFAULT SITUATION, meaning the one with which fs starts), restart fs (of course using your default situation), THEN call up the situation you saved at emma field, let's say, everything SHOULD be as it was when you saved it (day/time, position, activity, weather, fuel amt, everything). however, if you are using real weather the weather will change (in other words, if you changed the situation on july 4th and you call the situation up in winter and use real weather, it COULD be snowing in july at emma field. ).

hope that didnt mess with your head, good buddy.

also, i think there is a downloadable emma field 2004 manual at lago's site. you might want to read that, if you havent.

My normal method for using the sim is not to have a default flight at all. I save individual flights at specific locations in specific aircraft with specific weather. I use only the weather themes or selected by me in the weather settings section. I've never tried using real weather. Would you believe I've never even read the chapter or notes on real weather :-) I think I'm beginning to understand however what Francios was saying about things not being exactly the same all the time. Unless I'm wrong, I'm understanding that what causes things to change is tied to real weather. This would mean that my using sim selected weather and saving a flight would indeed give me the same dynamics I left when I saved the flight.

I guess I'll have to look into some reading up on using the real weather.

:-) And downloading that Emma manual is a great idea. I'll go over and see if I can find it at Lago. I assume they have it on the Emma download page.

  16. Dudley,

I completely understand your concerns with adding programs to FS and possibly changing or messing things up. To reduce your worries, try this. Buy Emma, it is well worth it. Then, install it by the method that is explained in this post link below.

    http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.pht=#138282

Just a little info on my system and FS.

It is not near what you are running and I am locked at 25 frames and get from 17 to 25 most of the time. Here is the kicker…I have my settings pretty close to what you described, with shadows. My add-on Scenery folder is 1.5 Gig and my Aircraft folder just topped 12 Gig. I have all the GeoRenders and Orcas, some Payware but mostly free aircraft. One thing that has been mentioned in the forums was to keep all of your Payware (GeoRenders) Scenery at the top of the add-on scenery priority list.

I hope all of what everyone had told you, helps you make the decision to get Emma and settles your concerns. You will love it.

Thanks.

  17. i hear ya. as they say, "whatever floats one's boat."

i know how i am once i have my settings the way i like them. to me, my settings are gospel for me. and yours should be gospel for you, too.

you MIGHT notice a slight FR degradation at emma field once in a while, but hardly noticeable.

let us know how it works out and consider joining up with us. 'tis easy.

lotsa ex-flyers, student flyers, new & present flyers here.

    cheers

Absolutely! and thanks very much for your interest and suggestions. I'm going to go get Emma tonight, then take a run up there. With any luck at all, some kind soul will save me a hot dog or two!! :-)

  18. They do appear at different times and the engineering is done by Maurizio Gavioli. The same man was responsible for many 'tricks' for FS, published by LAGO in the past. Maurizio picks up all kind of variable from the FS progrma, such as weather settings, time of day, season etc. and provides action triggers according to those different situations.

When it is cold there will be no barbecue outside, in the winter there are no umbrealla's at the restaurant terrace, on windy days there are no gliders coming to the field, etc.

Of course the number of objects and actions are limited, but there are 365 different days in a years with varying weather on each of them, so it will be a long time before a pattern gets repeated

Fascinating! A real acheivment. I honestly believe that the use of random behavior is the next step for FS.

One thing though Francios; if you save a flight at Emma with the day and time and the sim selected weather set and bring that flight up again without changing anything, won't what those settings brought up the last time be the same as they were the first time you were there? I see how might work by changing the date and weather settings, but saving a flight and bringing it up again with the same settings while having the dynamics react differently is still puzzling to me.

  19. to be quite honest, dudley, a LOW FR of 17 is terrific!!

you havent mentioned whether you have GROUND SHADOWS ON or not; GROUND SHADOWS are major FR hogs (as far as i know and many many folk turn them off by default).

another thing you might want to consider is that, unless you want a lot of a.i. traffic (meaning default airliners traffic or some payware traffic proggy like "ultimate traffic" you could really turn that down to 10 or even less). that will free up a lot of FR too.

i'd hate to have you mess with some autogen file, instead of tweaking a few settings in the sim configuration.

there are some other tweaks for FR enhancement if you want to "hear" of them.

I do have the shadows on. I'll experiment with them off and see how it goes, but I have to admit...I like um!!! :-) My AI traffic is set at 50%. I know I can cut this down a bit if I have to.

Basically, now that the FR decrease issue is gone, the sim's ok at 25 once more and all is at peace in the valley again :-)

    cheers

  20. dudley,

yes, you will be quite fine with emma field, and you will love flying there for low and slow "short field" procedures in single-engined tailees and trainer type craft.

    questions:

what framerates are you getting NOW and what were you getting before you tweaked out the default autogen xml (if you can remember)?

what is your a.i. traffic set to?

do you have AIRCRAFT shadows turned ON?

do you have GROUND shadows turned ON?

    do you use real weather?

do you have any addon textures like?

    clouds?

    the fsw "bits&pieces" file?

give us a holler if you need any help.

    greatest luck, buddy

Much thanks for the help. Greatly appreciated.

My system is a high end Hypersonic Sonic Boom using a GeForce FX5900 Ultra and 56.64 drivers (56.72 unstable)

The only add on's I have are the Captain Sim Mig21 and the RealAir Decathlon. I also have FSGenesis NE landclass.

I have the FR pegged at 25. My settings are on the high side of 3/4 right on most sliders.

The FR issue wasn't specifically a low frame rate but rather a declining frame rate as you used the sim. Over 30 minutes I could go down to 17.

Taking out the default.xml file in autogen fixes this, as it's caused by a bug in the autogen file that keeps making scenery out of range as I understand the issue anyway.

I'm sort of in a pickle with what I want to see in the sim as I like good graphics, but need the performance to bench test flight models. The answer seems to be a compromise.

Emma will be a nice place to just go and hang out a bit with the Decathlon. Most of my sim flying is in the Mig 21 and flying out of Emma will be like the old days when I first started out crop dusting in a 450 Stearman! :-)

I still don't quite understand how Emma works with dynamic scenery. If I go there say on a weekend and bring up the Decathlon fly it a bit then save the flight dark and cold there for the next time, won't the movements of the people and objects be the exact same thing when I go back there again for another flight? I mean if the objects and people appear differently and at different times the second time I go there; this is REALLY software engineering :-)))

  21. You could say it is both random and predictable at the same time( yeah Mustang defend that logic  ) The activity depends on factors like season, time of day, and weather. The activity will not be identical, but should be about the same level, when you return to a saved flight. Unless you use real weather, in which case the gliders hanging out over on the grass strip might pack up and go home if a thunderstorm rolls in.

Sounds fine! So it's everybody's considered opinion so far that what I've done in my system won't effect Emma or the sim performance at all.

I think I'll get Emma. It sounds like a fun program.

  22. Hi Dudley,

Welcome to the field :) I also used to use that trick to disable my autogen. Emma worked just fine with that set up.

Thank you, for both the welcome and the info. I'm beginning to get a good feeling about my possibilities . If Emma works with than autogen file renamed and doesn't return me to the frame rate loss issue, I'm going to get it.

Tell me; with Emma installed, when you braing it up and start a flight there, do things actually move around...like people and vechicles? And is this motion completely random and unpridictable each time or is it motion that is repeated in a predictable way each time you go to Emma, say for a saved flight?
