I have recently purchased a book on building instrumentation for flight simulators including FS 2004. What do I need know to interface the home built gauges to the FS 2004 simulation software? I have some knowledge in programming. Thank you.

Sorry, you need someone who knows about hardware interfacing first. Then your software will depend how the hardware connections are accomplished. There's a cockpit builder's Forum near here. Perhaps a message there might elicit some useful suggestions?

Once you sort that side out, you may need the FSUIPC SDK, from http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.
