Mr. Pete

Hi from Brazil, SA

I have a Garmin 296 real GPS and I'd like to use with FS4 in my Sony VAIO.

My computer doesn't have serial port, as I know... only USB port

How must I do to run this fantastic module with this GPS and 11" laptop???

Tks for dedicate time to FS

You can add serial ports to any PC with a USB port by using a USB Serial adapter, which are available quite cheaply (anything from 10 to 60 Euros for different qualities -- a cheap one would do).

Make sure the 296 accepts NMEA or Aviation format inputs for position. I have three Garmin GPS units and none of them do. I think only the aviation-oriented ones will work.

Hi.

How can I do to FS2004 GPSout module send to Garmin 296 USB port GPS?

I'm using Franson GPSGate to create virtual com ports but doesn't work.

I think that solution is very simple, but I"m not expert to resolve.

I'm desesperately looking for a setup answer.

Tks again.

Why are you using virtual ports? If you are connecting a real GPS you need a real port. How do you think you can connect a real device to a virtual port? Virtual means "not real".

Virtual ports are for running a program in a PC whilst pretending it is connected on a serial port to the same PC.

Hello !

to make your GPS 296 work, you need a serial port adapter (not the usb cable) (i ibought it at Golf Coast Avionic via the net).

in the the main menu (push twice menu), choose set-up then go to COM 1 file then choose Aviation In

I use it and it is working fine

I you have a 2nd computer it is working well to (using wide fs)

Assuming you really mean "serial IN" (for the GPS would need to RECEIVE data from the PC), you need to know that the "S" in "USB" does stand for "Serial", and it is probably the serial connection you need. On the PC USB ports have a strange name (not "COMn") which you'd need to determine -- I think there's an example in the GPSout docs. The usual problem is that the connection to the GPS on the PC will be taken up by an Active Sync or other program, installed to enable you to download routes & maps and upload tracks. I think you have to stop that running to free up the port.
