Pete Dowson Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 577 Server = PILLY-PC 3182 Trying TCP/IP host "PILLY-PC" port 8002 ... 3182 Error on client gethostbyname() [Error=11004] Valid name, no data record of requested type Not seen that one before. Looks like it doesn't know how to convert "PILLY-PC" into a TCP/IP address. Is your network actually working? Can you see PILLY-PC via other programs, like Windows Explorer? It could be a network installation problem. Here's help I found elsewhere: "An 11004 error means that the name you provided for a server in the client connection cannot be resolved to an IP address because DNS entries for that host name cannot be found or connection cannot be resolved to an IP address because DNS entries for that host name are misconfigured (for example a CNAME record without an appropriate A record). Try using the appropriate (internal or external) IP address for the server in the client connection string instead of the name." So you could try deleting the ServerName= parameter and using the ServerIPAddr= parameter instead, with the IP address. Incidentally: my wideclient.ini shows this:[Config] ServerName=pilly-pC protocolPreferred=TCP Why did you add these lines? If both PCs are running XP or Vista, and they are both in the same WorkGroup then WideFs should link aytromatically, without you specifying a Server name or IP address. Furthermore, the "ProtocolPreferred" parameter is only relevant to the SERVER INI, not the Client - I don't know how you got this mixed up. If you specify a Server name or IP address, as you have, you should also specify the protocol e.g. "Protocol=TCP". Regards Pete
biggest424 Posted October 2, 2008 Author Report Posted October 2, 2008 hi pete, thanks for replying.i got it working now.i just changed the server name to using the server ip addr instead.now its connecting.i have one other problem when trying to get the addon program named fs commander 8.3 to connect to fsx.i am running fscommander on my client computer but when i try to connect to fsx it gives me a error saying unable to connect to flight simulator, the programmers for fscommander said that the problem would come from fsuipc.i updated to the new version of fsuipc4 4.30 and still getting this problem.dont know if you have a solution because the fsuipc.dll and widefs is used to connect the fscommander and fsx on the network.
Pete Dowson Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 i have one other problem when trying to get the addon program named fs commander 8.3 to connect to fsx.i am running fscommander on my client computer but when i try to connect to fsx it gives me a error saying unable to connect to flight simulator, the programmers for fscommander said that the problem would come from fsuipc. Well, they would, wouldn't they. I'm afraid I don't know FS commander, but I do know a lot of folks use it quite happily over a WideFS link. Are you sure it is FSUIPC it says it cannot connect to? I think it needs directory access to FS as well, and may be having the same problem if it is using the computer name not the IP address. Have you shared the folders it needs on the FS PC, and can you access those okay on the client PC using Windows Explorer? All I can do is look at your logs (FSUIPC4.LOG, WideServer.LOG and WideClient.LOG) and tell you whether FSUIPC and WideFS are working okay. If they are, he problem is either with FSC or your network, still. I suspect the latter, because all you've done so far is worked around a problem you should never have had in the first place if the network was okay. Regards Pete
biggest424 Posted October 3, 2008 Author Report Posted October 3, 2008 HI PETE, thanks for answering,i think wideclient and wideserver are working fine because i see it connected on the fsx pc .i am also sure my network is working fine because i already shared the files and could access them on the client pc but i think it has to with running as administrator with vista.i got it to work once and then it went back to its old way again.ITS VERY FRUSTRATING,
Pete Dowson Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 thanks for answering,i think wideclient and wideserver are working fine because i see it connected on the fsx pc . Still, if FSC complains it may not be getting the correct data. I still think it worth me looking at those logs for you. i think it has to with running as administrator with vista.i got it to work once and then it went back to its old way again.ITS VERY FRUSTRATING, Not sure why admin rights has anything to do with it, unless this is preventing FSC accessing the folders it needs -- though you say they are shared okay. Certainly neither FSUIPC nor WideFs need any special rights except when registering. Regards Pete

Pete Dowson Posted October 4, 2008 Report Posted October 4, 2008 please give me a run through of how to share folder on vista?i mean the complete step by step procedure.i think im missing something when it comes to giving permission and security to theses folders.when i choose fsx folder to share on the network.who sshould i give permission adn security to for the client pc.would the client pr ,be determined as anonymous/users/network/adminstrtator. I'm definitely NOT the best person to ask about this. I had a devil of a job and only managed to share files on Vista properly by trial and error. It is a most infuriating operating system, setting traps all over the place and trying to hide things from the user. I am only using it on my main two FSX systems, and then only because I am using the 64-bit version for more memory usage (8Gb and 4Gb respectively). The first thing I did on Vista was disable UAC (User Account Control) and stuff like Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and so on. Even doing all that wasn't easy. And I wouldn't do that sort of thing if I were using the same system for Emails and Websurfing -- these are FSX machines only1 Check using Windows Explorer. Providing you can see the folders which FSC wants to see from the client PC, using the same paths you've given FSX, and you can read and write files to it, I really think that proves you've done enough. Are you sure it isn't still the same Networking error you started here with? i.e. Error on client gethostbyname() [Error=11004] Valid name, no data record of requested type Remember? Your Server name (PILLY) is not recognised, and you had to use the IP address? How does Windows Explorer see the Server -- presumably not using that name? If you never fixed the network problem I guess that could still be the main reason for FSC's problems. Regards Pete
biggest424 Posted October 4, 2008 Author Report Posted October 4, 2008 hi pete, seems like disabling uac made it work perfect but i use my computer for surfing and dont want to leave it at risk
Pete Dowson Posted October 4, 2008 Report Posted October 4, 2008 hi pete, seems like disabling uac made it work perfect but i use my computer for surfing and dont want to leave it at risk Disabling only UNC doesn't really leave it at risk provided you think twice before executing or opening any files you don't know. I think all UAC really does is ask you to confirm that you really want to do what you say you want to do -- those annoying messages asking for confirmation. It may also stop some things being done without elevated administration rights. I'm sure that if you still have Windows firewall and defender running, and a good anti-virus (like AVG free) then you'll be just as well protected against everything, except of course yourself. ;-) Regards Pete
biggest424 Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Posted October 8, 2008 hi pete ,thanks for your help .i have one more question,i have some of my goflight modules gf-t8 switches working with fsuipc4 .4.30 but how do i get the indiucator lights on these switches to work?
Pete Dowson Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 hi pete ,thanks for your help .i have one more question,i have some of my goflight modules gf-t8 switches working with fsuipc4 .4.30 but how do i get the indiucator lights on these switches to work? FSUIPC knows nothing about displays at all, but I did write a little freeware FSUIPC client application called "gfdisplay" which you can use for GoFlight LED indicators and for GF digital displays, like radio and MCP values, too. It's available in the usual download place. Regards Pete
biggest424 Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Posted October 8, 2008 i looked at it pete but never really understood it ,will take a look again.i like using fsuipc to prgram my modules because i dont need to start no other programs but i also like to see my indicators lights working when switches or on and off.
Pete Dowson Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 i looked at it pete but never really understood it ,will take a look again. There are examples, and the T8 and P8 LEDs are the easiest -- just one line for each LED stating what lights them. You'd need the FSUIPC Offsets list (in the FSUIPC SDK) to find the values the LEDs are supposed to be indicating. Regards Pete
