Re-install of FSX, no FSUIPC

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have recently had to re-install FSX on my Vista 32bit PC.

All works OK.

Patched to SP2 FSX runs ok

Tried to install ASX SP4 on client PC but this for some reason doesn't work with FSX SP2 so I uninstalled that and repair installed FSX SP1 on server (main) PC.

Still unable to connect the client to simconnect

I KNOW THIS IS A SIMCONNECT ISSUE AND ASX ISSUE BUT POSTING INFO HERE TO GIVE BACKGROUND TO MY FSUIPC4 PROBLEM.

Which is - tried to install FSUIPC 4.40 into FSX service pack1, registered both widefs and fsuipc4 ok.

FSUIPC does not show up on FSX's menu bar (pressing alt), the last entry in the list if help, no modules menu.

I followed the instructions for removing the SIMCONNECT folders in WINSxS folder (took a while to figure out that to change permissions you have to also change ownership of the folder). All 3 folders removed and FSX repair isntall carried out to SP1.

Re-installed FSUIPC with same registration info (all bought and paid for)

here is the last install log...

Tried to install ASX SP4 on client PC but this for some reason doesn't work with FSX SP2

ASX seems to work fine with FSX SP2/Acceleration here.

so I uninstalled that and repair installed FSX SP1 on server (main) PC.

When you uninstalled SP2, how did you remove the SP2 Simconnect? It isn't easy. The side-by-side library system is very sifficult.

Still unable to connect the client to simconnect

This is ASX's client, you mean?

Which is - tried to install FSUIPC 4.40 into FSX service pack1, registered both widefs and fsuipc4 ok.

FSUIPC does not show up on FSX's menu bar (pressing alt), the last entry in the list if help, no modules menu.

FSX doesn't have a Modules menu entry in any case. It has an "Add-ons" menu instead, which is where FSUIPC will appear, if it connects okay to SimConnect.

I followed the instructions for removing the SIMCONNECT folders in WINSxS folder (took a while to figure out that to change permissions you have to also change ownership of the folder). All 3 folders removed and FSX repair isntall carried out to SP1.

Ah, right. Did you repair from the FSX DVD first, then SP1?

NOTE: SimConnect Acc/SP2 Oct07 is supported, but it isn't installed.

NOTE: SimConnect SP1 May07 found but not in WinSxS folder!

There's the clue. Looks like you have a SimConnect.dll in the wrong place -- in the FSX folder or in the Modules folder, or possibly in one of the Windows folders. Apart from normally unaccessed folders, like the SDK, it must only be in its correct WinSxS folder.

Do a search for SimConnect.dll and remove any outside the WinSxS folders or the SDK.

... please check and possibly remove "D:\FSX\fsx.exe"

Ugh. That's a daft line -- that should say "SimConnect.dll". I'll need to fix that ...

... Ah, looks like I did already. The current message (in 4.418) is:

... please check and remove copies of SimConnect not installed in the WinSxS system

Anyway, the result of the bad copy of SimConnect being there, somewhere (probably in D:\FSX) is this:

1188 Could not link to all needed SimConnect facilities

which is why there's no menu entry.

Regards

Pete

Yes, ASX client on other PC. ASX installed only on the client PC and followed instructions to set up comms between the 2 computers but it fails to locate the FSX running on main PC. I have had this setup working before with ASX patch 3, using SDK installed in FSX SP1 with the SDK patch 1a. Thus did work before which made me suspect the SP2 and SDK sp2 updates had caused a problem. Hence the reverting to patch 1 and SDK 1a. This was a curve ball for me that I guess I need to spend more time on when the FSUIPC is working. Sure the lack of simconnect isn't helping.

Which is - tried to install FSUIPC 4.40 into FSX service pack1, registered both widefs and fsuipc4 ok.

I meant that, couldn't remember the term!! Add-ons.

This menu is missing. I have not yet installed PMDG products either because I didn't want to further confuse the issue. Therefore no other non-standard install menu items.

Yes, repaired from FSX DVD then SP1 file.

I did a search for simconnect.dll, a full hard drive search didn't return any results appart from those in the SDK folder, slightly longer filename - Microsoft.FlightSimulator.SimConnect.dll, 2 files found in ...core utilities\simconnect SDK\lib and legacy interfaces folders.

Did I remove too many Simconnect folders from winSxS folder? Should they have been re-installed by one of these FS programs, FSX or SDK?

... please check and possibly remove "D:\FSX\fsx.exe"

Ugh. That's a daft line -- that should say "SimConnect.dll". I'll need to fix that ...

I'm sure this would be quite a funny line... if I knew what I was talking about!!

Where do I go from here? I don't suppose either of those 2 search results are the correct ones, are they the files that FSUIPC finds but can not connect to?

Should there now be a folder in the winsxs folder containing simconnect?

many thanks again for your help, sorry to have broken what was effectively working!! Somehow!

"legacy interface folders"? What are they?

If it didn't find the two in the two remaining WinSxS folders (one for the Base, one for SP1), your repair didn't work.

Are you searching including hidden and system files and folders? Otherwise it won't find them. You may need to go into the Explorer folder options and tell Vista to stop hiding extensions and system files from you.

Did I remove too many Simconnect folders from winSxS folder? Should they have been re-installed by one of these FS programs, FSX or SDK?

Theoretically, yes. but virtually all the problems folks have ever had with SimConnect have been due to uninstall/reinstall attempts. I think the whole "side-by-side" system in Windows is very, er, flakey! Standard uninstalers just don't uninstall any side-by-side libraries their installer installed, which is why we revert to manual deletion -- otherwise the installer/repairer won't touch it. Ugh.

Where do I go from here? I don't suppose either of those 2 search results are the correct ones, are they the files that FSUIPC finds but can not connect to? Should there now be a folder in the winsxs folder containing simconnect?

Certainly. There should be two, the base one and the SP1 one. Repair or re-install should have put them back, assuming you deleted the folders (not the DLLs -- it is the presence of the folders which is checked).

...core utilities\simconnect SDK\lib and ...core utilities\simconnect SDK\legacyinterfaces

Lazy typing on my part, didn't want to type the whole tree again!

I deleted all 3 windows winSxS FOLDERS and contents as mentioned in a post I found (not sure by whom) as I wanted to go back to the sp1 version and wanted to make sure. This, especially as I had seen comments in the fsuipc log file about compatible with, but not installed etc...

I have all hidden folders visible and searchable. I looked manually too.

The re-install has not replaced any of the simconnect folders in winsxs so I guess something has gone wrong at some point.

I shall uninstall as much as I can again. Check that there are no entries in the winsxs folder, just in case. check all other MS FSX folders have been removed, icluding modules, remove the sdk installation and then try again.

Any registry entries to worry about?

One last question....... When I last installed FSX I was not asked for my flight sim registration code or been asked to verify you as a safe add-on writer, I have previously ticked the allways allow option but this time did not get asked. Where is the file that says always allow and how do I reset it? Sure I've not been asked to trust you due to the simconnect issue and FSUIPC not running but just making sure.

Thanks again, I shall post back if the next attempt works or not.

Not related to SimConnect. Or at least, not that I'm aware of. The whole of the side-by-side library system is a bit of a mystery to me, though. Oddly, despite being involved in the Beta testing of FSX and its updates, and as a consequence repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling versions on at least three different PCs (XP, Vista32 and Vista64), I've never had any SimConnect problems, so I have always had to try to help folks in theory rather than practice, and the theory is, er, either unpublished or hard to find/understand.

Unless you reinstalled Windows that is correct.

Internet Explorer is charged with the maintenance of the certificate store, and consequently the trusted and untrusted publisher lists. You can view them and edit them through its internet Options menu somewhere.

An update....

Having removed the simconnect folders (all 3 of them) from the winSxS folder by changing the ownership, and security settings I have tried to repair and completely re-install FSX to basic, SP1 and SP2 levels. Nothing I try replaces the simconnect folders and files in the WINSxS folder.

I have now rolled back to a system restore checkpoint from before I patched to SP2 and long before I deleted the folders, and there are now 2 simconnect folders found (with simconnect.dll files in) in the WINSxS folder.

I re-installed FSX to basic, non-patched version, ran it, shut it down, installed FSUIPC4.40 and the FSX running FSUIPC log file still shows simconnect can not run.

I found that the simconnect folders within WINSxS folder after the restore still had the NEW ownership value, i.e. NOT 'trustedinstaller' so I followed the instructions in the help file Pete found in another similar thread http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/15936owner.html to change the ownership back to trustedinstaller and I am now having another atempt to re-install FSX.

I am of the idea that this is a problem with the way things are written and managed in the WINSXS folder and would like MS to spend some time on the solution. This has only been a problem since I had to re-install FSX. No blame on the FSUIPC side from me!!

I will post back when my drive has finished chugging.

I think you have to be sure to restore all those ownership and security settings afterwards.

I re-installed FSX to basic, non-patched version, ran it, shut it down, installed FSUIPC4.40 and the FSX running FSUIPC log file still shows simconnect can not run.

Evidently SimConnect is stil not installed correctly then. Where's the FSUIPC4 installer log? Didn't it report an error?

same details as in my earlier post...

78 System time = 12:46:57

125 FLT UNC path = "\\MANTION\Users\Glen\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\"

No, NOT the same! You didn't have that error 0x80004005 before. Not sure what that means though. :-(

Incidentally, you cut off the top of the Log file so I cannot even see which SimConnect it was first trying.

I found that the simconnect folders within WINSxS folder after the restore still had the NEW ownership value, i.e. NOT 'trustedinstaller'

Ah. Fatal!

I am of the idea that this is a problem with the way things are written and managed in the WINSXS folder and would like MS to spend some time on the solution.

I agree. The side-by-side system seems half-baked. The biggest part of the problem appears to be that uninstallers cannot uninstall Side-by-Side library installations, so if they somehow foul up they cannot be repaired. Or it is worse than that. The act of uninstalling does not fully uninstall side-by-side libraries, but somehow makes a mess of whatever way Windows has of linking to them. Something to do with those horrible long GUID values I suspect, but the whole system is shrouded in mysteries like that.

Please do consider submitting a full account of the trials and tribulations you've had to go through over this tpo Microsoft, via tell_fs@microsoft.com.

Maybe Windows 7 will have this subsystem sorted? Let's hope so!

I scanned my PC for simconnect.dll but did not find a copy. A manual navigate to the 2 simconnect folders in WINSxS, both contain a copy of the dll.

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.flightsimulator.simconnect_67c7c14424d61b5b_10.0.60905.0_none_dd92b94d8a196297 is version 60905

I haven't bothered going to SP2 so far as I don't see the point.

Does VISTA or FSX know these files exist anymore???

I shall forward this whole post to that e-mail address and hope the mighty Aces can save the day.

At what point do I re-install Vista?

At what point is it OK for a grown man to cry?

Many thanks for your continued help with this problem,

Glen

the install log file...

...

Checking compatibility with installed SimConnect:

... Okay, Probe Manifest matches installed SimConnect 60905 (Original)

Found later build SimConnect 61242 (SP1 May07)

Okay, that is better ...

and the last run log file....

...

2266 Failed on SimConnect_Open, return = 0x80004005: FSUIPC4 cannot operate!

But that is worse again. :-(

That error is being returned by SimConnect.

The scan didn't find them even though they were there? You had the search set to not look for system files by the sound of it.

Well, SimConnect is loading but it is now failing. This is a different problem. Googling on 80004005 brings up a whole host of stuff, but they all seem to have one thing in common -- read/write access problems, often to do permissions on files or folders. Most of those related to FSX seem to be about activation problems after re-installing FSX.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas. This is in Microsoft Tech Support country now. Or bite the bullet and re-install Windows etc. :-(

Unfortunately the tell_fs email address is not there for you to get support, but to keep the FS team informed so that they can (a) do better in future -- i.e. fix bugs in new versions, and (b) assist MS tech support with anything that eventually manages to get through their filters.

Regards

Pete

Thanks for your help and effort Pete, I've now passed this on to a Microsoft help agent, Santosh, who has told me to.......wait for it...... un-install and re-install FSX!

I suppose they have to start somewhere!

Will post back with anything useful

Glen

(Praying I don't have to re-install Vista)

  • 2 weeks later...

lol

Only kidding........

I shall try to step through what I did....

1 - uninstal and re-instal of FSX by the 'uninstall a program', deleting the old folders that get left behind. Didn't touch the registry though.

FSUIPC didn't work so on looking further I followed the instruction for removing the simconnect folder from the WINSxS folder. This involved changing ownership and rights etc which is a bit of a dark art to me. I deleted 3 folders from WINSxS.

2 - The next install failed to create a simconnect folder in the WINSxS folder. FSX worked fine but no external applications would work. This was proved by the FSUIPC logs. (Just checking back and I see I did post early on that it's not a problem with FSUIPC!)

After several failed attempts I rolled back my PC to a previous restore point, pre uninstall of FSX.

On checking in the WINSxS folder there were now 2 simconnect entries (I had previously not been using FSX SP2). This looked like progress.

3 - I tried another install. This also failed to run simconnect and therefore FSUIPC, giving the following error.

From what Pete said in an earlier post, something about installer rights....

This is a different problem. Googling on 80004005 brings up a whole host of stuff, but they all seem to have one thing in common -- read/write access problems, often to do permissions on files or folders.

I read up on permissions again and on checking the WINSxS folders (post restore) I saw that the restore had not changed the permissions back. I changed the 3 folders back to ntuser/system and tried again.

I also sifted the registry for FSX entries and (after a backup) deleted all I found.

BINGO!

I now have a working FSX sp2, I also have simconnect client running on PC #2 which can see the FSX installation, I have even managed to setup up wideFS (which has just become slightly less useful due to the temporary shutdown of BAVirtual) on the other PC and that works great too.

BIG THANKS TO PETE, great software used by inadequate people!!!

I think this must have been the critical part, missing on the earlier attempts. It's a bit astonishing that rolling back doesn't undo permission changes. We'll have to watch that!

Hi, just to check, I was being funny with my first post today!! It's one of those things that many people do on forums that I find really annoying. Fix thieir own problem but don't say how.

I was typing my story when you asked for the how and when, it just took longer than I thought to type up and you got in there first.

You're far too good at keeping an eye on these pages, to your credit.

Thanks again, till next time,

Glen

Yes, I understood that. I used to be annoyed by it too, but it happens so often that it bothers me no more! ;-)

There's another case from seven weeks ago just come to the fore again this very minute, also replied again. We'll see ..

Thanks & Regards

Pete
