FSUIPC4, Garmin 296 (aviation), USB Port

I have read several forums and adding them all together suggest this should be possible, but could you confirm I can use FSUIPC4 to connect to a Garmin 296 and if so, whether the following is what I need:

* FSUIPC4

* A USB to Serial port adapter

* A Serial port to Garmin 296 8-pin serial cable.

What else do I need to configure? Will this work?

I'm afraid I don't have such a device, so I can't confirm the hardware side of things, but there are threads here from folks who have got the GPSout facility in FSUIPC4 to work with that model GPS.
