davecat Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 New FSX rig running W7 64 bit. Registerd version FSUIPC. After calibrating alerons and elavator, planes are unflyable as the control inputs are extremely exagerated. Have fiddled around, but have not figured out what to do. I did not have this problem on my old set up running Vista 32 bit.
Pete Dowson Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 After calibrating alerons and elavator, planes are unflyable as the control inputs are extremely exagerated. Sounds like you made a mess of calibration, or you have the axes assigned both in FSUIPC and in FSX so the differing values conflict. No way does any form of calibration following the instructions ever exaggerate anything. It's simply a process of matching the range of values coming from your controls to the range of values expected by FS. If you want any advice about what you've done, show me the settings you've made -- the FSUIPC4.INI file from the FSX modules folder. But first, if you are assigning in FSUIPC disable controllers in FSX. If you are not, then make sure the sliders are set correctly in FSX, as instructed -- sensitivity full right (max), null zone full left (off). Do that BEFORE calibrating. Pete
davecat Posted November 9, 2012 Author Report Posted November 9, 2012 Pete, thanks for your patience. The problem is probably right in front of me. I have not assigned axes within FSX, at least i think I did not...how would I determine if I did? I did set, per you manual, sensitivity full right and null zone full left. My INI file below. Pete Dowson Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 Pete, thanks for your patience. The problem is probably right in front of me. I have not assigned axes within FSX, at least i think I did not...how would I determine if I did? FS assigns things (axes and buttons) automatically, using it's own idea of what is what from the connected devices. If you assign in FSUIPC you MUST unassign in FS, or, better, disable the controllers in FS. HOWEVER, I see you have not assigned them in FSUIPC, so leave well alone. [JoystickCalibration]Aileron=-5506,-512,512,4105 Elevator=-15131,-512,512,16156 Throttle=-16193,16192 You appear to have skipped some steps in the calibration process -- those centre zone values are defaults. I doubt whether they would truly suit any real device. I don't think you've set the centre values correctly. Also the min and max values for the aileron control seem very low -- compare them with your elevator. I don't think you turned the aileron control anywhere near far enough when calibrating. This will mean the whole range of the simulated aieron is covered in just the small left-right zone you calibrated it to. That is bound to give you rather over-sensitive control -- good for fighter pilots but not for most aviation. I suggest you start again with the calibration, and follow the steps ennumerated in the user guide one by one. Regards Pete
davecat Posted November 9, 2012 Author Report Posted November 9, 2012 Pete...I am trying. Disconnected the yolk, re-booted, and re-calibrated. Still no luck. Super sensitive yolk even though the ranges in FSUIPC look good. I did just notice something when calibrating the elevator. As I pushed/pulled elevator, the values under reset sometimes do not move at all, are slow to show values changing, or does not register movement at all. This is also happening with aleron movement at times. Other times it just jumps from from a low value to a high value. And sometimes it seems to be scrolling through input values without any problem. Could this be as simple as a yolk gone bad after 8 years? INI attached..... Pete Dowson Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 Pete...I am trying. Disconnected the yolk, re-booted, and re-calibrated. Why disconnecting? That makes FS re-assign. Take care doing things like that. Still no luck. Super sensitive yolk even though the ranges in FSUIPC look good. I assume you mean "yoke"? (yolk is the centre of an egg! <G>). Aileron=-15992,512,5906,16016 Elevator=-14598,-4819,512,13376 Throttle=-16193,16192 Those values look better, with a wider dead centre zone though. Do you want it that wide? You might do better with a narrow dead centre zone and just use the slopes facility to flatten things a little around the centre. I am beginning to think your idea of "super sensitivity" may be more related to the aircraft you are trying. Without being able to reach both extremes of elevator and elevator, as designed for that aircraft, you do not really have the full control you should have. I did just notice something when calibrating the elevator. As I pushed/pulled elevator, the values under reset sometimes do not move at all, are slow to show values changing, or does not register movement at all. Other times it just jumps from from a low value to a high value. Could this be as simple as a yolk gone bad after 8 years? 8 years? Have you ever cleaned the pots inside (electrical cleaner spray)? If the IN (input) values aren't changing reasonably smoothly then you either have a bad connection, or bad (dirty) post), or even pots with broken wires (assuming they are wirewound -- most cheaper ones are resistive carbon tracks). Pete
davecat Posted November 9, 2012 Author Report Posted November 9, 2012 Pete You are welcome to come over for yolks anytime. Better yet, a pint or two! I took it apart. Blew air throughout. Still not getting clean data inputs when calibrating. Have used several aircraft with same results. I disabled the yoke and reverted to keypad for control inputs and everything was very smooth when alerons or elevator were deflected. I am going to assume this yoke has died. Curious. With your simming experience do you have an opinion of CH vs Saitek? Thanks for your all your help. Your dedication to the flight sim community is commendable! Dave Houston
Pete Dowson Posted November 10, 2012 Report Posted November 10, 2012 I took it apart. Blew air throughout. Still not getting clean data inputs when calibrating. That wouldn't clean out years of accumulated sticky dirt inside. I use Super Servisol switch cleaning lubricant spray. Penetrates and clean switches etc. Spray so that it penetrates into the components and operate them whilst wet. Leave to try before reconnecting. Curious. With your simming experience do you have an opinion of CH vs Saitek? I had a CH one many many years ago. it gradually got worse and worse. I had it serviced once at a CH service agents over in Shrewsbury, and it lasted a couple more years before it was junked. I think they make them a lot better these days. I have Saitek here, which seems okay -- certainly better pots with higher resolution. But i don't like any of these. They don't feel anything like the real thing, so I was spoiled by doing real flight lessons. I use PFC yokes now (I do the FS drivers for PFC). I'll probably give my Saitek to my grandson when he gets to be 12 or so, along with the throttle quadrants and other bits. At present he's more into sports and playstation type stuff so i wouldn't waste them just yet. Regards Pete
