I have had troubles with regular and random CTDs in FSX whilst using FSUIPC. It never occurred before using FSUIPC in October.

Symptoms are that FSX suddenly freezes and crashes to desktop. And it can be any part of the flight - on taxi, on cruise or on approach.

The attributable file is sometimes FSX.exe and more recently it has been FSUIPC4.DLL. Another DLL it often points to is MSSVCR80.dll.

Other times I have noted a simconnect related error. I use Activesky 2012.

The operating system is Vista 64-bit.

I have renewed the DLL.XML file and downloaded the latest copy of FSUIPC but it hasn't fixed the problem. Attached is a copy of my FSUIPC.ini file.

I am very IT literate but this fault completely escapes me. I would be grateful if someone could give me some pointers as to where to look next. I am wondering if certain sounds might be causing the error.

I never experienced any CTDs before starting to use FSUIPC and the only reason I started using it was to be able to better map my controls and to interface with Hoppie's CPLDC software.

Any ideas?

The only way I know for FSUIPC to be such a cause if when a program is using its interface into FS and sets bad values.  You'll probably need to do a process of elimination to find out which it is.

Without actual information -- the stuff from the Windows event viewer, I can't really help further. The FSUIPC log file is also relevant, maybe showing what was happening then.

Attached is a copy of my FSUIPC.ini file.

It isn't here, and anyway I doubt that anything in there is relevant.  If you want to show me files, best to paste their contents into the message. You can wrap them up using the <> button above to differentiate them and make longer ones scrolable in their own right. Better files to show are the Install Log and the main run-time FSUIPC4 log. But most important of all, for crashes, are the Windows event logss relating to the crash. They give error type, module and, most important, the offset in the module so pinpointing the position.

I never experienced any CTDs before starting to use FSUIPC and the only reason I started using it was to be able to better map my controls and to interface with Hoppie's CPLDC software.

I've not heard of that. Is is an FSUIPC client program?

Hi Pete, thanks for the reply. Tried to put the ini file in the last entry but it seemed to refeuse it - something to do with the forum settings.

Anyway, here is a transcript of the latest log file (edited the first couple of lines to cut the email and licence details:

Hoppies CPLDC program is a client program of FSUIPC and needs FSUIPC to extract info for it to operate.  information can be found at http://www.hoppie.nl

It seems to be some sort of issue with Actvesky 2012, I think.  As I said, I've renewed the DLL.XML file and updated to the latest version of FSUIPC but it has me foxed.

And for what it's worth here's my FSUIPC.ini transcript.

Hi Pete, thanks for the reply. Tried to put the ini file in the last entry but it seemed to refeuse it - something to do with the forum settings.

Anyway, here is a transcript of the latest log file (edited the first couple of lines to cut the email and licence details:

...

And for what it's worth here's my FSUIPC.ini transcript.

Seems you didn't read all of my reply? I did say "If you want to show me files, best to paste their contents into the message. You can wrap them up using the <> button above to differentiate them and make longer ones scrolable in their own right.". And the INI file isn't really relevant. As I said in my last reply, the Install log is quite important as it would show things about your installation which do look relevant. (I said "Better files to show are the Install Log and the main run-time FSUIPC4 log").

Anyway, even without the Install log there are some relevant things which indicate that your FSX + Simconnect install is not good:

      187 Trying to connect to SimConnect Acc/SP2 Oct07 ...

...

889 SimConnect_Open succeeded: waiting to check version okay

      889 Trying to use SimConnect Acc/SP2 Oct07

21466 Running in "Microsoft Flight Simulator X", Version: 10.0.61472.0 (SimConnect: 10.0.61259.0)

...

   299241 Exception 5 "VERSION_MISMATCH", Ref 7, Version 0.61259: Open: SimConnect Version incorrect!

299241 Trying another version of SimConnect ...

You can see that it had an exception just before the freeze and CTD.

Exception 5 is bad. This is returned by SimConnect when things are mismatched, as it says. But there's no reason why it should do that shown in the log -- version 61472 of FSX is SP2 and version 61259 of SimConnect is the SP2 and Acceleration version of Simconnect, so they should match!

I can only think that there's some corruption, or some mix up in modules, between these which doesn't show up iin the reports it is giving.

The first thing I would try is to reinstall the SimConnect part -- run SimConnect.msi from the FSX SDK. If that doesn't work, or you don't have the SDK, then you could try running the SP2 update again. Maybe it will repair FSX.

I don't know how FSX could get into such a state. Have you had other problems and tried reinstalling things at all? I know that uninstalling FSX doesn't work well on SimConnect installations and seems as likly to make things worse rather than better.

I assume there were no records of FSUIPC4 actually crashing in the Windows event viewer?

Regards

Pete

Peter,

The event in the Windows event viewer reads as follows:

"Faulting application fsx.exe, version 10.0.61472.0, time stamp 0x475e17d3, faulting module FSUIPC4.dll, version 4.9.2.4, time stamp 0x52a733c0, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00013670, process id 0x1834, application start time 0x01cef6d02d011840."

In response to your recommendations I've reinstalled simconnect from the SDK (using simconnect.msi) and have also deleted all previous versions of activesky that were still installed on the computer in case they were causing some sort of incompatibility issue.

In answer to your question I've never reinstalled any component of FSX in the 5 years I've installed it on this computer, and have experienced nil Crashes to DEsktop until I started using FSUIPC in October.

Now that I've renewed simconnect I'll run FSX again during this coming week and will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the advice.

Peter,

I've updated FSUIPC to version 4.9.2.5 from your website and did a short trial flight this evening. So far so good. Will try it on a longer flight this week to see if the problem replicates but I'm cautiously optimistic!

Peter,

Following further testing online in VATSIM my FSX once again crashed to desktop whilst taxiing to the runway.

Windows event log Error message as follows:

Faulting application fsx.exe, version 10.0.61472.0, time stamp 0x475e17d3, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00001c6e, process id 0x153c, application start time 0x01cefb85f060773a.

The message gives no indicator of the faulting module, but in FSX the error was indicated as being in simconnect.dll and ntdll.dll.

The FSUIPC Log gave no indication of an error at all.

I subsequently removed FSUIPC from the modules directory and rebooted FSX, re-mapping all the controls via FSX as it was previously. I have since flown two successful flights online with no errors.

I'm scratching my head over this one but whilst I can't seem to point the error directly to FSUIPC, it seems that something in my FSX just isnt compatible with it; so thanks for your help but for now I'll live without it unless you can shed any further light on what else might be the problem.

Thanks again for your help.

Unfortunately that isn't any help at all. If it were in SimConnect then it would most likely be a corrupted SimConnect installation. FSUIPC does use SimConnect extensively and continuously, so a problem in Simconnect would certainly be more likely to show up with FSUIPC installed. The NTDLL modules is a collection of most of the more common functions used by all programs in Windows, so identifying that is no help at all.

If it only happens when using the on-line module then its additional full use of SimConnect would be contributory -- if it doesn't fail with FSUIPC installed but the on-line module not installed, that would be an equivalent indication to a different 'cause' as the one you are intimating, wouldn't it? You do really need to consider all aspects of what you have installed.

There may also be other Simconnect clients contributing to the problem. You would really need to do a full exploration of the alternatives.

BTW you don't mention the version of FSUIPC. The currently supported one is 4.927a.

Pete
