Pete Dowson Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 I installed FSUIPC and widefs and it just says waiting for connection any ideas?? thx Based on that information? No, none at all. Check your VERSIONS -- always needed. Then check the WideServer and WideClient logs. You have "something wrong" is the only conclusion from the minimal information you provide, I'm afraid. Pete
HAmmer32261 Posted March 25, 2006 Author Report Posted March 25, 2006 I have the latest version of both FSUIPC and wide fs heres what the log read ********* WideClient Log [version 6.51] Class=FS98MAIN ********* Date (dmy): 24/03/06, Time 23:36:16.296: Client name is HAmmer 391 Attempting to connect now 1391 Failed to connect: waiting to try again 2407 Attempting to connect now 43407 Trying to locate server: TCP/IP needs ServerName or IP address!
Pantu Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 Hi, as your log says: you need to set the "server name" and / or "IP adress" in the FSclient.ini. Did you add the clients name in the Wideserver .ini? e.g. [ClientNames] 1=PFD 2=PC2 If your network is ok it should work. Best rgds Peter
Pete Dowson Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 I have the latest version of both FSUIPC and wide fsheres what the log read ********* WideClient Log [version 6.51] Class=FS98MAIN ********* Date (dmy): 24/03/06, Time 23:36:16.296: Client name is HAmmer 391 Attempting to connect now 1391 Failed to connect: waiting to try again 2407 Attempting to connect now 43407 Trying to locate server: TCP/IP needs ServerName or IP address! And where is the log from WideServer? You'll find that in the FS Modules folder, where you put the WideServer.DLL. (You DID install WideServer too, didn't you?). Are you using Windows XP on both Server and Client? If not then you need to tell wideClient the name of your Server PC. This shouldn't be needed if both PCs are running XP. Regards, Pete
Pete Dowson Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 as your log says: you need to set the "server name" and / or "IP adress" in the FSclient.ini. He shouldn't need to do that if both PCs are running XP. The current version of WideFS sorts itself out on its own. I suspect this user has only installed FSUIPC on the Server and hasn't installed WideServer. Either that, or one of the PCs is using Windows 98 or Windows Me so the automatic server detection won't work. Did you add the clients name in the Wideserver .ini?e.g. [ClientNames] 1=PFD 2=PC2 You don't do that manually. That list is made up by WideServer automatically, as Clients connect. It does this so that if it receives any button presses from Clients it can consistently assign the same button numbers, so button programming will work no matter what order the Clients log on. Regards, Pete

Pete Dowson Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 Yes im using XP on both comp'sheres the wideserver log .... Okaythere's nothing showing wrong in the Logs of either Server or Client. However, it does seem that something is preventing the broadcasts from the Server reaching the Client. One thing here is extremely odd -- both your Server PC and your Client PC appear to have the same names! From the Client log: Client name is HAmmer From the Server log: Server name is HAMMER Now, possibly the difference in capitalisation may make it okay, but I would be very suspicious of this. Having the same name for two PCs will give problems. Anyway, assuming either that you resolve that, or that it doesn't matter (because of the caps differences), try adding ServerName=HAMMER to the [Config] section of the WideClient.INI file. This will get around the fact that it isn't getting the broadcasts and may then even work, though I doubt it. However, it should at least give you an error saying why it doesn't work. The most likely problem is a firewall. You know i never had any problems untill i installed the PMDG 744F Not sure how that can mess up your Network settings at all. Regards, Pete

Pete Dowson Posted March 25, 2006 Report Posted March 25, 2006 [Error=11001] Host not found Okay, the answer is simple then. Your Sever PC is not visible to your Client PC. Either one or both isn't connected to the network, or they are in different Workgroups (check the Workgroup name in each by right-clicking "My Computer", select Properties, then Computer Name), or the IP addresses are in different subnets (http://www.xxx.yyy.zzz doesn't match to the level of the subnet mask, usually 255.255.255.000 -- meaning the http://www.xxx.yyy parts must be the same). Those are the 'elementary' reasons I can think of, but there may be others. It is a Network problem for sure -- if you can't solve it then ask Katy Pluta over in the FS2004 forum. Regards, Pete

Pete Dowson Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 I reformated my main box and Widefs connected once but now im getting the waiting for connection again heres the log The wrong log is shown. This one, from WideServer, shows the connection occurring: Date (dmy): 29/03/06, Time 22:33:35.281: Server name is HAMMER... 963921 Connected to computer "SHARRON" running WideClient version 6.510 (skt=5140) 1091640 Error 10054: client socket disconnected at Client: removing (skt=5140) As you can see, the connection was recognised at "22:33:35.281 + 963.921", or 22:49:39.202 and disconnected 127 seconds later. The only WideClient log you show is a later one, with no connection: Date (dmy): 29/03/06, Time 22:51:32.171: Client name is SHARRON To see what is happening, the current (relevant) logs from both sides need to be viewed. There's no error seen by the Server at all, it sees a connection, then a couple of minutes later, a disconnection. It is that simple. Please also always show the complete logs, including the performance summary which is given at the end, when both FS and the Client are closed down. If the session you have just run and closed failed, then the relevant logs are named "WideServer.log" and "WideClient.log". The ones with a "0" in the name are the previous logs -- they are saved to allow folks to restart FS or the Client after a problem (eg an FS crash) without losing information. Regards, Pete

Pete Dowson Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 There is no connection being made at all. Either your computers are not seeing each other or one is not running Windows XP, or for some reason the broadcasts made by the Server are not working. To eliminate the latter put ServerName=HAMMER into the [Config] section of the WideClient.ini file, and try again. Are you able to see each computer from the other in, for example, Windows explorer? Can you read and write files over the Network? All the logs show is that the Client is not connected to the Server, there is no visibility of one computer from the other. Regards, Pete

Pete Dowson Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Yes Pete i can do everything on my clietn computer over my network but for some reason its not seeing Widefs The answer is the wrong way around. It is the server which needs to be accessed from the client. Can you do everything on your server computer from your client? 2625 Error on client gethostbyname() [Error=11001] Host not found This most certainly means that the Server named "HAMMER" is not known to the Client PC. Sorry, I don't know what you have wrong, all I can see is the Windows cannot see your Server PC from your Host PC. It just is not connected as far as it is concerned. This is nothing to do with WideFS, or anything I know about. It simply means you do not have a working network as far as I can see. You never answered that you checked Windows Explorer could see the Server from the client, only the other way around. You need Windows network help, sorry this is not my subject. Regards, Pete

Pete Dowson Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Yes it sees both Well, Windows in the client cannot translate the server name into an IP address. This is all the error on "gethostbyname" means -- in this case the computer named "Main" is not known to your Client. I guess that means that the service which provides this in one or other of your systems is not running. This in turn would mean paths like \\Main\c .... would not work either, and I'm reasonably sure this means "Main" would not be seen in Windows Explorer. I really don't know what you are seeing in Windows Explorer as if it can see the name "Main" then so should any other program running on the same PC. You could try setting the "ServerIPaddr" in the Client INI instead. This assumes you have a fixed assigned IP address for your Server. Regards, Pete

Pete Dowson Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 WOOT!!!!! I GOT GOT IT WORKING PETE!!!!I changed a line in the wideclient.ini from Servername=192.168.1.100 to IP=192.168.1.100 and it works great now. Well, I'm glad you got it working, but there are many puzzles left unanswered. You don't set the IP address in the INI by either line, it is the "ServerIPaddr" parameter, as I tolkd you earlier, viz: You could try setting the "ServerIPaddr" in the Client INI instead. If "192.168.1.100" works why did you set "192.168.1.1" before? Have you simply changed the IP address? And here: 375 Server = MAIN 375 Trying TCP/IP host "MAIN" port 8002 ... 375Okay, IP Address = 192.168.1.100 375 Connection made okay! The log shows you are using "ServerName=MAIN", not the IP address in any case. So, what has all this been about? Just getting the name or address wrong each time? Surely not? And why cannot your Server broadcast to your Client, so the whole thing works "out of the box" as it does on all other all-WinXP networks? Something is very strange somewhere. Regards, Pete
