John Veldthuis Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 I have been trying to get Active Sky X running on a remote machine through SimConnect as per the instructions but have failed as it keeps saying need SP1. One option given was to remove SP1 and then re-install it which I did but still no luck and I gave up with that. However I notice now that FSUIPC will not work either. I tried reinstalling it and all sorts to no avail. I have done some logs and can only assume something is awry somewhere but I cant find what. The first log is the FSUIPC install log with some path info missing that I took out. Second is the FSUIPC log and lastly the SimConnect long. Hopefully someone can help with me having to completely wipe out my setup as it was humming along nicely. Running inside FSX on Windows Vista (SimConnect SP1 May07) ... 1187 Could not link to all needed SimConnect facilities ...0.00000 SimConnect version 10.0.61242.0Well, I've reproduced the salient points above. Somehow, it looks like the build number for the SP1 SimConnect is being seen, initially, as 61234, which was actually a Beta release of SP1. Were you involved in Beta testing at all?I've not seen anything like this at all before! FSUIPC is evidently trying to link to a version you don't have. Something in the Registry appears to be telling it there's a version installed which just plain isn't!Before I start adding some extra debugging information to find out why this may be so, could you try version 4.171 of the DLL, from the FSX Downloads announcement above, please? Just put the DLL into the FSX Modules folder. Show me the Log from that, whether it works or not.RegardsPete
John Veldthuis Posted October 7, 2007 Author Report Posted October 7, 2007 I was not involved with beta testing at all. I downloaded the service pack from FSInsider. As I said everything had been working fine until I tried to install Active Sky X on my other PC. I ran the installs over there for AS and the Simconnect.msi on that machine. I then set up the xml and ini file on the server machine and it would not work. Uninstalled the SP and reinstalled it and then boom. Anyway I tried the 4.171 dll and the same results. The logs below. Think I may be looking at a complete re-install. 0.00000 SimConnect version 10.0.61242.0 0.34360 Panels data export found and set to 20A819B8 1.46540 DLL Loaded: Path="Modules\FSUIPC4.dll" Version="4.1.7.1" ********* FSUIPC4, Version 4.171 by Pete Dowson ********* User Name="Me" User Addr="MyAddress" FSUIPC4 Key is provided WideFS7 Key is provided Running inside FSX on Windows Vista (SimConnect SP1 May07) Module base=61000000 DebugStatus=255 16 System time = 18:07:08 16 FLT UNC path = "\\TOWER7\C\Users\\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\" 16 FS UNC path = "\\TOWER7\I\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\" 1125 LogOptions=00000001 1125 Could not link to all needed SimConnect facilities 16188 **** Retrying SimConnect connection**** 16188 Could not link to all needed SimConnect facilities [code 0] 31250 **** Retrying SimConnect connection**** 31250 Could not link to all needed SimConnect facilities [code 0] 46313 **** Retrying SimConnect connection**** 46313 Could not link to all needed SimConnect facilities [code 0] 58891 System time = 18:08:07 58891 *** FSUIPC log file being closedMemory managed: 2 Allocs, 2 Freed********* FSUIPC Log file closed ***********
John Veldthuis Posted October 7, 2007 Author Report Posted October 7, 2007 I have just had a look through my PC and can find 4 instances of Simconnect.dll 2 are version 10.0.60905.0 and 2 are 10.0.61355.0 1 of each is in the C:\Windows\assembly directory under folders 1 earlier version is in the SDK managed folder 1 later version is in the c:\windows\winsxs\xxxxx folder Only the last is called Simconnect.dll. The rest are called Microsoft.FlightSimulator.SimConnect.dll Not sure where the 10.0.61242.0 version is coming from.
Pete Dowson Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 I have just had a look through my PC and can find 4 instances of Simconnect.dll... 2 are version 10.0.60905.0 and 2 are 10.0.61355.0 Those are FSX build numbers -- you get those in the Version Info of each EXE and DLL component. They are not the same as the internal version numbers. Those are correct for the original version 60905 of SimConnect and the SP1 version (which is 61242 -- it isn't a Beta). 1 of each is in the C:\Windows\assembly directory under folders1 earlier version is in the SDK managed folder 1 later version is in the c:\windows\winsxs\xxxxx folder Aha! There should be two of the WinSxS folders, one each with a SimConnect.dll in each. Could you read the FOLDER names in the Windows\WinSxS folder please, all those looking like this: C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.FlightSimulator.SimConnect_67c7c14424d61b5b_10.0.60905.0_x-ww_429211e9 and check in each one of those that there is a correct build of SimConnect.dll inside. The part I've emboldened in the path above is actually the SimConnect version number. You should have two such folders, one as above with 60905 (DLL build 60905 also) and one 61242, which has build number 61355. It sounds like your Registry says there is an SP1 SimConnect installed, and FSUIPC4 is believing this, but you don't actually have the corresponding WinSxS folder with the DLL inside, or you do have the folder, but no DLL. I think you would need to re-install either SP1, or both FSX and SP1, first uninstalling it (e.g. via the Control Panel programs applet). My repair method (given in the FSX help above) could be tried, but I've been told it is none too easy to delete these folders in Vista. Regards Pete
Pete Dowson Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 1 earlier version is in the SDK managed folder It just occurred to me that, since you appear to have the FSX SDK, and if that is the SP1A edition (if not, download and install from FSinsider), then you may be able to effect a repair by simply running the SimConnect.msi file you'll find in the Core Utilities part of the SDK. Regards Pete

Regards Pete I tried this as well without any luck. I orginally had both the directories in winsxs but the method in the AS said to delete these, un-installed SP1 and install. I even completely removed the SDK and tried that to no avail. Yes it was extremely hard in vista to delete those files but easy enough in the end. All it needs is for the admin person to take ownership of the folder, then give full rights to yourself. This causes an error but still seems to work. Then simply delete the folders. I might give it one more try with uninstall/install and if that does not work then remove the entire FSX, clean out the registry and any folders I can find and then start again. The repair option did not work in either case. Thanks for the help.
John Veldthuis Posted October 8, 2007 Author Report Posted October 8, 2007 Okay, Can report I have everything back up and running including Active Sky X. Had to do it the hard way though by un-installing everything, removing all traces of files on hard drives in all the various places, manually going through the registry and removing anything with simconnect in any part of it. Then ran CCleaner over the registry a few times and removed all the invalid links and stuff from removing everything. Then a complete re-install of FSX/SDK and then FSX SP1 and SDK SP1A. All up and working. Now only have to go through and add back in all my extra scenery I had installed and the few planes I had. Oh well at least it works again. Cheers from New Zealand

But, yes, actually, others have mentioned how awkward it is to get things put right in Vista once they get screwed up. Scope perhaps for some bright programmer, who knows this stuff about Vista to write a utility to do it all when needed. I'm amazed that the FS uninstall leave stuff all over the place, but when I asked MS about this they said it was MS "policy" for WinSxS libraries to be non-uninstallable (!!) Obviously the powers-that-be somewhere in MS (not the FS team) never expected anything in the WinSxS system to get screwed up! It may be worthwhile sending a full report about this to tell_fs@microsoft.com. Regards Pete
