Problem starting FSUIPC (with FSX)

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased FSUIPC (mainly to use with a Saitek yoke setup), but am having problems using it with FSX. It does not show up at all in the "settings" menu in FSX (there is no "add-ons" tab). I have tried changing the firewall details, but to no avail. I initially tried it with FSX and SP1, then with SP2, and then reinstalled FSX alone. Have also tried reinstalling FSUIPC everytime but all without success. Hopefully, the logs below will help:

FSUIPC install log:

Installer for FSUIPC4.DLL version 4.26

Looking in registry for FSX install path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\10.0

Parameter"SetupPath"

SetupPath="C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\"

Checking version of FSX.EXE:

... Version 10.0.60905.0 (Need at least 10.0.60905.0)

Checking compatibility with installed SimConnect:

... Okay, Probe Manifest matches installed SimConnect 60905 (Original)

Checking if there's already a version of FSUIPC4 installed in:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Modules\FSUIPC4.DLL

... No previous valid version found.

FSX Modules folder created okay!

Okay -- installed FSUIPC4 into "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Modules\FSUIPC4.DLL"

Looking for the current user's Application Data path:

... found as "C:\Documents and Settings\CB\Application Data"

Now finding \Microsoft\FSX\FSX.CFG for all users, including this one

Looking in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data"

No FSX.CFG there

Looking in "C:\Documents and Settings\CB\Application Data"

Found FSX.CFG in "C:\Documents and Settings\CB\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\FSX.CFG"!

Now checking DLL.XML ...

... There is a previous DLL.XML, checking for FSUIPC4 section.

... FSUIPC4 section already exists but will be replaced.

... FSUIPC4 section of DLL.XML written okay

Now checking for a SimConnect.XML file ...

... No SimConnect.XML file found. This is okay.

Looking in "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data"

No FSX.CFG there

Looking in "C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data"

No FSX.CFG there

Looking in "C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Application Data"

No FSX.CFG there

Now installing additional files into the Modules folder:

Installed "FSUIPC4 User Guide.pdf" okay

Installed "FSUIPC4 for Advanced Users.pdf" okay

Installed "FSUIPC4 History.pdf" okay

Installed "List of FSX controls.pdf" okay

All installer tasks completed okay!

Registration for FSUIPC4 was successful! (result code 00)

and the FSUIPC4.log:

I recently purchased FSUIPC (mainly to use with a Saitek yoke setup), but am having problems using it with FSX. It does not show up at all in the "settings" menu in FSX (there is no "add-ons" tab).

The Add-Ons menu, which is created by SimConnect for any add-on which requests it, is in the main FSX menu, not the "Settings" menu. In fact there is no "settings" menu, only a dialogue. The main FS menu is where it always has been, at the top of the screen when you press "ALT" in flight modes.

I have tried changing the firewall details, but to no avail. I initially tried it with FSX and SP1, then with SP2, and then reinstalled FSX alone. Have also tried reinstalling FSUIPC everytime but all without success. Hopefully, the logs below will help:

The install log shows that it is installed correctly, and the FSUIPC4.log shows it is running correctly, as far as you've allowed it. Since it was only running for 48 seconds I doubt whether you ever even got to normal flight mode, where you first get a chance to see the FS menu bar.

I think you must be getting confused with FS's start-up dialogue? There's no menu bar till you are ready to fly, never has been. Menu bars, as in all windows programs, are the little strips along the tops of Windows. The left-most entry in FS's Menu is labelled "flights", for instance. There's none labelled "settings" -- that's an item in the Options menu entry. And I've no idea where you got the idea FSX put its "Add-Ons" menu into a "Settings" dialogue.

Please, please, please do read just a little of the User Guide, and always try looking at it when you run into trouble. If you had you would see that it says, right in the first line after the heading Okay I've installed, and optionally registered. Now what?, that it clearly says, and emphasises:

With FSUIPC4 correctly installed, and Flight Simulator running and ready to fly, look at the FS Menu bar at the top of the screen. (Press ALT to bring it up if it is hidden).

:? I am so embarrassed now! I did read the user guide believe it or not, and got confused by - in the advanced one - the "all of the interesting options can be controlled through the Settings window". When you first load up FSX the first screen shows (on the LHS of the screen, from top to bottom), Home/Free Flight/Missions/Multiplayer/Pilot Records/Learning Center/Settings.

So I looked in the Settings menus (Sound/Graphics/Controls etc) and was confused when I could not find FSUIPC in there! I did not realise that you had to set up a flight first, but rather looked to calibrate the Saitek yoke before all that with FSUIPC. Evidently, I was unclear what the "ready to fly" bit actually meant!

Anyway, mea culpa. And very apologetic. Seems to work fine when a flight is running.

Right, time to set up that yoke. See if I can do that without making an eijit of myself. Thanks Pete for your quick reply.

Um, can we delete this thread to spare my future blushes?!

Ahyou read the Advanced User's guide before the main User's guide? Oooh. That's brave! ;-)

I hadn't realised it still said just "Settings" there. The FSUIPC options dialogue (which appears when you select FSUIPC from the Add-Ons menu) is actually entitled "FSUIPC Options and Settings", so really it should say that I suppose -- I'll change it for the next edition (shame, just missed this one).

However, reading it it does go on to say "... obtained by selecting the FS Add-Ons menu, then FSUIPC (ALT, D, then F)", so it is a little difficult to construe that as going to a Settings window first, I would think. Anyway, mostly I'd hope that by the time folks got to referring to the Advanced guide they'd be pretty handy with the options setting in FSUIPC already.

Well. if you insist, but I prefer not to really, in case it helps others. I'm sure no one will think less of you! ;-). Someone once set the only foolish question is the one that isn't asked (or something like that).

Regards

Pete
