FSUIPC doesn't install correctly

Recommended Posts

Hello guys and hello Pete Dowson (hopefully you read here...),

I just bought a version of FSUIPC4 for FSX at SimMarket as I wanted to run it with FS Commander which I purchased as well.

When I install FSUIPC it says it has been installed correctly (no error messages) and lets me input my registration key. But there is no Add-Ons-Menu in the FSX menu bar. Also when I want FS Commander to connect to FSX (via FSUIPC, running on the same computer), it says "Unable to connect to flight simulator Msg no process response". No error code or so, just this message. Besides from that, FS Commander works well.

So I guess FSUIPC has NOT been installed correctly. Could you give me any advices what I could do to solve the problem please?

After installation in FSX/Modules folder there is FSUIPC4.DLL, FSUIPC4.key and FSUIPC4 Install.log. The log says the following:

May the problem be that it doesn't find FSX.CFG ? My fsx.CFG is located in C:\Users\jakob\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX but obviously the installer only searches in admin folder. And it doesn't look into folder "AppData" anyways...

My system is:

Windows 7 Professional

Flight Simulator X + Acceleration Pack

Addons: Ultimate Terrain X, Ground Environment X, FS Simtimizer, FS Commander, (FSUIPC)

FSX Installation Path: D:\Spiele\Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! Jakob

I just bought a version of FSUIPC4 for FSX at SimMarket as I wanted to run it with FS Commander which I purchased as well.

You don't need to purchase FSUIPC4 to use FSCommander -- FSCommander is a licensed FSUIPC client program.

When I install FSUIPC it says it has been installed correctly (no error messages) and lets me input my registration key. But there is no Add-Ons-Menu in the FSX menu bar.

So, either FSUIPC4 is not being loaded by SimConnect, in which case it is a faulty DLL.XML file -- possibly corrupted by something else you've previously installed, OR you have a broken SimConnect installation.

The quick way to determine which is the case is to look in the FSX Modules folder and see if there's an FSUIPC4.LOG file, and an FSUIPC4.INI file present. If so, then FSUIPC4 has been loaded and there's some sort of SimConnect installation problem. In this case please paste the Log file into a message here.

After installation in FSX/Modules folder there is FSUIPC4.DLL, FSUIPC4.key and FSUIPC4 Install.log.

If that's all, if there's no FSUIPC4.log and no FSUIPC4.ini file, then it is your DLL.XML file which is corrupted.

Please go to this folder

C:\Users\admin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX

and get the DLL.XML file, then paste it into a message here. Please be sure to use the CODE button (the one looking like <>) with the XML text selected so that it's format is preserved.

May the problem be that it doesn't find FSX.CFG ? My fsx.CFG is located in C:\Users\jakob\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX but obviously the installer only searches in admin folder. And it doesn't look into folder "AppData" anyways...

It did find FSX.CFG, as it says:

Found FSX.CFG in "C:\Users\admin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\FSX.CFG"

Maybe you installed FSUIPC when logged in as "Admin", but you are now trying to run FSX as User "jakob"? You have evidently installed FSX under "Admin" in any case, as else there'd be no FSX.CFG there. Try running FSX as the same user you install things for, or else install again for the correct user.

[LATER]

This problem got me thinking. As you will see from the Install log, the installer examines, uselessly, all of the other current User folders as well as "AppData". Looking at my code I think I intended it to, instead, look in all of the AppData folders for all users. In fact one of the lines in the Log does imply that.

So, I am changing the installer now, ready for the next main update, so that it does just that -- install for all users which have an FSX.CFG file, not only the current user.

Meanwhile, you can log in to the user which will be flying FSX and rerun the installer. That's the work-around.

Pete

Thanks for your informative and quick answer, Pete!

I now at least PARTLY have solved the problem. FSUIPC (and connection to FS Commander) works when I use the administrator account but not when I'm logged in as "jakob".

No, there was no FSUIPC4.log and .ini file. You were right, the XML file was broken. It was

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?>

<SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0">
  <Descr>Launch</Descr>
  <Filename>dll.xml</Filename>
  <Disabled>False</Disabled>
  <Launch.ManualLoad>False</Launch.ManualLoad>
  <Launch.Addon>
    	<Name>FSUIPC 4</Name>
    	<Disabled>False</Disabled>
    	<Path>Modules\FSUIPC4.dll</Path>
	</Launch.Addon>

As I noticed the last closing tag was missing I added </SimBase.Document> and all was fine. But I don't know if this was the reason why FSUIPC was not loading or if it was just that I was not logged in as admin before (and only tried with "jakob"s version of FSX).

Earlier I installed FSX for all users when I was logged in as admin, so there is fsx.cfg both for admin and "jakob".

I installed FSUIPC when logged in as "jakob" but still the installer only watches out for admin's AppData. Can I just copy some lines from admin's fsx.cfg to "jakob"s AppData (or whole files)? Or any other work around, e.g. telling the installer in any way to use "jakob"s AppData?

I just could use FSX as admin and everything would be fine, but I'd like to play in "jakob"s account as I configured all my programs and settings in there and not in admin account... I hope you understand!

You don't need to purchase FSUIPC4 to use FSCommander -- FSCommander is a licensed FSUIPC client program.

To be honest there was some confusion about this when I wondered about which software to buy. In FS Commander's manual its written

If you have the shareware version of FlightSim Commander, you also need a version of Peter

Dowson's latest fsuipc.dll for connecting to FS 2004 and fsuipc4 for connection with FS X. For

details check Peter's homepage at www.schiratti.com. If you own the boxed version distributed by

Aerosoft, fsuipc is included.

I wasn't quite sure if its talking about the registered or unregistered version.

Anyways, I don't want to blame anyone for this confusion. Finally I bought FSUIPC also because of all the additional features, advanced joystick calibration and so on, and I think I will be very happy with it!

Yes, that would be the reason. It can happen. I've added a fix for that in a later version of the Installer, but that version isn't released yet.

I installed FSUIPC when logged in as "jakob" but still the installer only watches out for admin's AppData.

Sorry, I don't know how that's possible, as it picks up the current user's name -- it doesn't invent the name "admin" to find. Please show me the installer log illustrating this peculiar behaviour, as it makes no sense to me. I install as user 'Pete' and the current installer (the same one you have, before I apply the change I mentioned in the message above after [LATER]), that's all it looks at. There's no way it knows about "Admin", nor looks for it -- at least not until i release the next version which will find both "admin" and "jacob".

I wasn't quite sure if its talking about the registered or unregistered version.

There's only one version. Registration buys you the user facilities. All of the application facilities are licensed to the respective applications, and free for access by freeware.

Ok, you don't have to think about it anymore. I just copied DLL.XML from admin's to jakob's AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX and now all works fine :)

[edit...]

Concerning the wrong user's AppData used... I don't know! The code snippet in my first post is the install log which had been created when I was logged in as jakob. Maybe its a Win7-specific problem. Maybe the variable the installer is reading returns "admin" because the installer requested admin rights some seconds before...

[edit 2...]

It is also possible that I explicitly chose "run as admin". Don't know how this is handeled by windows...

Thanks for your help!

That's not really the point. I need to understand what is going on.

That cannot be so. The installer obtains the current user name from Windows using a specific call to get it, and it got 'admin' as shown here:

Looking for the current user's Application Data path:

... found as "C:\Users\admin\AppData\Roaming"

I've checked the call used and it is explicitly specified, in Microsoft documentation, as obtaining the current user's AppData folder path (CSIDL_APPDATA). I think it gets this from the CURRENT_USER sections of the Registry. If it did not do this I would have by now been inundated with support requests because it wouldn't have installed correctly on anyone's PC. As it is it works here on XP, Vista, Win732-bit and Win7 64-bit.

Maybe its a Win7-specific problem.

No. I have tested on Win7. My main development system is Win7, as is my main Simulator PC.

Maybe the variable the installer is reading returns "admin" because the installer requested admin rights some seconds before...

No. The installer automatically gets "elevated administrator" rights by virtue of being an installer. That cannot change the current user. It operates like all other installers, and I don't know any which get the current user wrong.

Pete

Fair enough. I'd really like to help you. Let me know if I can test something for you.

You didn't need to delete anything. You can run the Installer as often as you like. It will not overwrite anything timestamped later, but does check that everything is correct.

Well, I'm completely at a loss. It seems Windows is actually somehow capable of lying about the current user! That's incredible! You'd think that loads of things would go wrong! :-(

If and when you have time, could you download and try the new installer version, which tries to install for all users. The link is:

http://fsuipc.simflight.com/beta/Install_FSUIPC4634.zip

Hopefully this will work properly and I can forget about your Win7's deceitfulness ;-) . Otherwise I shall have to add some code to get more information.

Thanks for helping!

I'm sorry, but it did the same as the official downloader. Puts DLL.XML into admin's AppData but not jakob's... Install log seems to be quite the same but I can post it as well if it helps.

Feel free to manipulate your code and to send it to me!

I will send you a private message with my email included, so you don't have to upload it anywere if you don't like to.

Installer for FSUIPC4.DLL version 4.60a

Ooops! This isn't the Installer I wanted you to try. It's the original one for 4.60a. The new one installs 4.634.

I'll check out wwhat went wrong with the link and let you know. Sorry for wasting your time!

[LATER]

Okay. It's this damned new Forum software. I don'yt think I'll ever get used to it. No matter what you do to links you have to invoke a special facility which changes the ACTUAL link data hidden underneath. I keep stumbling over this.

Try this one (I fixed the previous one too):

I just realised that my account name in windows actually is not "jakob" but "jack". That doesn't change anything concerning the facts we discussed before. Just wanted to let you know if you intend to hardcode any paths for testing purposes...

I'm not doing any changes at all till I learn of your results with the correct Installer.

Regards

Pete

Thanks for all your help. Its really great that you as a developer are encouraged to solve all these problems, even if its only a single case where the problem occurs... I guess 90% of software support people would have made it a week-long dilemma. Not so did you... Cheers, Jakob

Good! That's really pleasing. I have no idea what the original problem was on your system, but this is the best all round solution in any case, and I think it is what I intended in the first place. That was a few years ago now and it's all a blur! ;-)

Thanks for testing and confirming.

Best Regards

Pete
