New version causes SB4 tranponder to stay on

Recommended Posts

I have just installed the new version of FSUIPC but now when connecting to Vatsim using SB4 I cannot get the transponder to go onto Standby. If I remove the FSUIPC.INI fie and let it create a new file all is

fine. However, I have many keys programmed which I dont want to lose so I need to use the old INI file. What settings in the INI file controls this does anyone know?

EDIT...It turns out that its the main FSUIPC4.DLL file that causes this. I have rolled back to the previous version and all is OK again.

Peter can you shed any light on what is occurring here?

thanks

Keith

There's no change which would do that which I can identify. It isn't a complicated facility.

Do you mean you have a switch or button programmed to put it into On/ModeC and that works, but switching it back doesn't? If you don't mean that, what do you mean?

Can you please tell me exactly which "previous version" you are talking about - do you mean 4.60a, or something between that and 4.669? The transponder controls for Squawkbox4 were added AFTER 4.60a, so if you have those programmed I assume you do actually mean one of the interim versions?

So, you say how you have the transponder options programmed, please? Maybe show me the relevant Buttons or Keys section.

Regards

Pete

Peter,

If I revert back to 4.60a everything is OK. I have assigned no button at all in FSUIPC to control Squawkbox 4 transponder, and I wasnt aware of that anyway.

WHen using the new version module I just click on SB4 menu as I have always done and select "Transponder Standby", and then something in the module then turns it back to ACTIVE.

If I then remove the new module and go back to the 4.60a one, it works as it should!

EDIT. Peter I have an Opencockpits Radio, if I disable this module from running then I am able to use the transponder properly. There is no active or standby mode on the radio so

I am not sure why this is happening. There must be a conflict somewhere between the new FSUIPC module and the radio I guess.

Have you any ideas?

Well there's some assignment in your INI which is activating the added FSUIPC control to drive the Transponder mode. There are 4 new controls, added about 6-8 months ago: transponder on/mode c, Transponder standby, Transponder toggle, and Ident. These are assignable to buttons or keys in the FSUIPC drop-downs. (They are also provided in FSUIPC3 for SB3).

WHen using the new version module I just click on SB4 menu as I have always done and select "Transponder Standby", and then something in the module then turns it back to ACTIVE.

It is obviously something in your INI file activating one of the new controls, because you said " If I remove the FSUIPC.INI fie and let it create a new file all is fine. ". This is why I asked you to show me the relevant Buttons and Keys sections of the INI file! It will be easy to correct if only you'd understand this..

If I then remove the new module and go back to the 4.60a one, it works as it should!

As I already said, the SB4 facilities were not in FSUIPC 4.60a.

I gave you my "ideas" in my last reply. You seem to have missed part of my response! :-( It should be so easy to fix in your INI file -- from what you've said it is all down to an assignment in there!

Even with a new install of the new FSUIPC4 and a fresh INI file...It all works until I run the Opencockpits module.

Even with a new install of the new FSUIPC4 and a fresh INI file...It all works until I run the Opencockpits module.

Ah, that's different. That's not what you said before!

In that case what I think OpenCockpits has done is to drive the SB4 transponder directly via its SimConnect registered controls AND the FSUIPC offsets, so you are getting the double effect. Maybe they've done this so that their driver works with both SB3 in FS9 and SB4 in FSX -- precisely the reason FSUIPC was updated.

Can you ask them about this? Maybe it is something they can handle? I really don't want to remove a facility which was requested and which is now used by a lot of folks. All I did was make an existing FSUIPC3 facility for SB3 also work correctly for FSX and SB4 so folks could assign hardware switches or buttons to control its transponder.

Let me know if they won't do anything about it and I'll look to see if there's some sort of fiddle I can incorporate for you. I'd need a bit more information then, though, like a log from FSUIPC4 with IPC write logging enabled whilst you run the OpenCockpits driver.

How are you operating the SB4 transponder with OpenCockpits BTW? I think i need a clearer picture.

(The FSUIPC4 INI file is of course not relevant now you've told me your first statement about it was wrong).

Many thanks Peter

I will post on their forum but they are not the best on replying though.

I have put the contents of the log file below as I cant attach it for some reason. This is with the OC module running.

I only change the transponder code within the OC module, there is no option for switching either standby or normal mode. Does that make sense?

Once again

Thanks

Keith

I will post on their forum but they are not the best on replying though.

Well, if you get no joy get back anyway.

I only change the transponder code within the OC module, there is no option for switching either standby or normal mode. Does that make sense?

So how do you manage: only using SB4's menus or dialogues?

Why not try assigning a transponder standby/on button or switch via FSUIPC? After all that's why it's provioded.

The log only shows 7B91 being set to 0:

1503101 WRITE0 7B91, 1 bytes: 00

As defined in the SB3 offsets definition, this sets "normal" mode:

0x7b91 1 Transponder mode

0 = normal

1 = standby

SquawkBox reads this value to determine which transponder mode to send to the network. Your transponder gauge should set this offset when the user changes modes with your gauge.

.

It seems to be doing this constantly, every 2.3 seconds on average. So the question for OpenCockpits is: WHY? Doesn't it mention this anywhere in the documentation, or don't you get any? If it deliberately writes 0 to set mode normal, there must surely be a way of telling it to set standby too, when you need it to.

Pete

Peter,

Yes, I only use the SB menu for changing transponder mode. In FS9 changing the aircraft transponder switch also changed this in SB4, but in FSX this doesnt appear to work

for me.

I have posted on their forum but I dont hold out much chance on getting a reply.

Documentationm for the module is very sparse, in fact I have never seen one

Yes I have tried assigning switches etc through FSUIPC as you suggest, but it seems the OC module overides them. I can of course REM out the

transponder side of the module and just use the NAV and COM parts but I would rather not do that.

Oh well, I will wait for a reply from their forum..

thanks for your help

Keith

Hi Peter,

As I thought the Opencockits forum was not productive, they never do respond to anything technical i'm afraid.

If you do have chance would you be able to add the parameter into the INI file as you stated so I can use the new version please?.

Many thanks

Keith

Okay.

I'll see if I can fit it in over the next couple of days. Look out for a version 4.701 (DLL only) update in the Download Links subforum probably before Monday. I'll put a note in this thread too if I can find it by then! ;-)

No rush Peter, with the Easter Holiday I wasnt expecting such a quick response anyway. :o

Many thanks for helping with this, and I will keep an eye on the forum..

I've not tested it yet -- haven't got SB4 installed at present. So before I put 4.701 up in the Download Links subforum can you test it for me and let me know, please?

Download FSUIPC 4.701, copy the DLL into your FSX Modules folder, then add this line to the [General] section in the FSUIPC4.INI file:

NoActionOn7B91=Yes

Note that this won't stop the FSUIPC-supplied controls for SB4 working, only causes FSUIPC to ignore changes to 7B91 from external programs.

Let me know if this does the job. It isn't an obvious facility internally -- the ClientData access to the SB4 settings via SimConnect are asynchronous, so it definitely needs testing.

Peter,

I have tried the new DLL and altered the INI file. I'm sorry to say but the same occurs and I cannot get SB4 to Squawk Standby.

Hmm. Strange. Something else is going on then, apart from what we saw in the Logs. Can you repeat the test but with SimConnect logging enabled, please? See the FAQ subforum for details. ZIP the resulting log and send to petedowson@btconnect.com.

Okay, i found a silly error I made. I put the processing of that new parameter into part of the INI file processing which deals with unregistered users only. It's now moved into a part which covers all users. Apologies for that. Please download 4.702 and retry. Here's the link:

[uPDATE: it is now 4.703 due to other changes!]

FSUIPC 4.703

Peter,

You Sir are a genius. It works !!

I have changed the INI file as above and used this latest DLL and it is perfect..

Many thanks for your prompt action Peter.

Peter,

I have decided to go back to FS2004 after using FSX for a while. However, this problem has reared its ugly head again. I am using FSInn instead of Squawkbox 4 and the transponder is deafaulting to mode C all the time. The same as I had with SB4 last year. I have put NoActionOn7B91=Yes in the FSUIPC.INI file but this has not cured the problem as it did in FSX. Have you any ideas.

thanks

Keith

That parameter isn't needed in FS9 because there is no SimConnect in FS9 and no possible conflict between SB's client data (which can't exist) and other settings. There never was any conflict in FSUIPC3 because it doesn't touch the transponder unless programmed to do so by an assignment. Other programs and add-ons can of course chage SB3's offsets, though, through FSUIPC. But not FSUIPC itself.

Pete
