I don't have the expertise that folks like Bill Womack have when it comes to custom buildings and photoreal ground textures, etc., but there are so many airports in Flight Sim that could do with a facelift that it's difficult to keep my hands off a few from time to time. As mentioned in the "Sunday Flights" thread, Brad and I did some flying around the lakes in Minnesota and the Hawaiian Islands and he talked about the "target Rich Environment" in and around the lakes for building new airports, both ground based and water. Sooooooooooooooooooo, lol. I did this one. . .
Then, after having taken off from Hana on our way to Dillingham, I went back this evening and redid Hana, to kinda liven it up a bit.
Funny thing about Hana is that there is a mission in FSX that culminates with you landing at Hana and in that mission they have a very nice little terminal building with the name of the airport on a sign above the door. . .but they don't use it in the sim. . .only in the mission. . .lol. . .sooooooooooooooooooo, lol. . .now it's in both, lol.

Well, Brad and I hooked up today to do some flying over the landscape of Minnesota and Hawaii. Here's a sample shot from the Hawaii flight. . .I posted the rest on my photobucket page rather than overpopulate the forum with shots.
The rest can be viewed here:

Here's a little something that many may know about, but maybe some of you don't. Here's a way to show airport names in FSX by adding a few lines in the "standard.xml" file in the control folder under FSX (where FSX.cfg resides). Check it out!!

I think maybe he meant to say the "1st Annual Plum Island Fly-In", not Emma Field....
-
Flew the Nocturnal take off and approach a few hours ago and man what I great addition. Plum Island 24/7 now. . .thanks to all concerned.
-
I didn't get many, as I run a dual monitor setup and guess what monitor was active when I took most of the shots, lol, lol, yep the one with the GPS filling the entire screen, lol. Here are some that did make the cut though:
-
Yep, Congrats to Dobie for a great flight and everyone else for hangin' in there and making the "1st Annual Plum Island Fly-In" a success. Too bad that the CTD got Bill before he was able to complete the flight, but a tremendous thank you for the beautiful addon that is Plum Island.

Says the selected attachment no longer exists?

Hey Brad,
Man, I've been tied down with activities with my grandkids the past few days and unable to get online in the evenings, but that should be back to normal now, so I'll be able to fly as I normally would. Is there any update to the pilot's participating in the fly-in tomorrow? I've been trying to drum up some enthusiasm outside of the Emma Forums, so I was wondering if you picked up any additional participants. Also, I haven't seen a list of participants aircraft or liveries they are flying. . .do we know that info at this point?
Looking forward to the event tomorrow. Halloween tonight, so I won't be online until tomorrow in the AM. Cya then.

Below are some links that you can use at your discretion. I did some enhancements for two additional airports on the flight plan for Saturday (KOWD and KTAN). The links are to bgl files that can be dropped in your FSX (only) Addon/scenery folder (I have FSX/Accel, hence the "at your discretion" disclaimer). Also, there is a link to a flight plan that can be loaded into your GPS to follow for the Fly-In (saved as a pln extension so just drop it in your Flight Simulator X Flights folder).
A few more words about the scenery bgl's. As noted, I have Accel, so the scenery objects I used are objects that you may not have if you don't have accel. If, after loading the bgl's and going to those airports, you see nothing. . .or things look out of sorts, just remove the files and everything will revert to the original, no harm, no foul.
Looking forward to meeting everyone on Saturday.

. .where is everybody??
Working on Tongass Fjords and Emma Field.......
Ah yes. . .and that's a very good thing for all :D

Brad and I did another short flight (75nm) from Plum Island to Hyannis in the default 172. Really pleasant scenery along the way and the landings were uneventful. The Elite (by Lionheart Creations) was what I landed in at Plum prior to our leaving for Hyannis. We need more folks to join in. . .where is everybody??

Got a chance to fly online with TS (after some troubleshooting. . .I could hear Brad (btburgy), he couldn't hear me) today. I hooked up with Brad at Plum Island and we made the Fly-In circuit, shooting Touch n' go's at all the airports with a break around the middle for dinner and some offline to do's. Great fun to fly with another pilot and it gave us a chance to give TS a good workout and all systems seem to be a go for Saturdays event. I even took the time to try FSX's nifty little ability to change other pilots aircraft on the fly. Darned if it doesn't work as advertised. Right click on a pilots name in the MP chat box, click on "Change _____Aircraft" and then go through your list of available airplanes that you have loaded in FSX. . .choose one and voila, the other guy is flying an airplane that you chose. . .pretty cool.
We ended up with Brad sitting on the parking ramp by the fuel tank waiting for me to touch down on rwy 10 (over the trees). Actually, Bill has provided a really nice "notch" in the treeline on final approach and you just line up with that and set it down over the numbers for a nice smooth landing. A word of caution though. . .I was flying the Mooney Mite and my touchdown point was just beyond the numbers, airspeed was 77kts and I got within 20ft of the fenceline on the opposite end of the rwy before turning around to head back to the parking ramp. Unless you have reverse prop capabilities, be aware that coming in "hot" will probably put you through the fence (if we land on rwy 10) or into the trees (if landing on rwy 28).
Of course all this is a mute point if you're an ace pilot (which I am not), just sort of a HU for you to consider when choosing the airplane you'll fly. Thanks again to Brad for an enjoyable evening of flying. . .great fun! Anyone who has the time and wants to join either myself or Brad or both of us:
Brad is on usually from around 9:30am CST til around 4:00pm and then later on from around 6-7pm CST until whenever
I am usually on after 7:00pm CST until around 11/11:30pm except Thursdays and then I'm not online until after 9:00.
See ya in the skies!!

FSX Accel has the option (I can't speak to earlier versions) of selecting other pilots on the session and switching their aircraft to look like anything else that FSX pilot has in their hangar.

Hi Ed
I noticed you had a skymaster 337 in your screen shot. :D I have been trying to find one for FX with no luck. :(
I sure like that plane.
Did you import that from FS9?
Hey Dobie,
That's the FSD O-2A (payware). An extremely well done airplane. Originally done for FS9, they did a patch to make it work in FSX.
Here's a link to the product page:
-
nice plane but couldn't load on VISTA
Hmmmm, that's what I run too and it loaded fine for me.
-
Hi Bill,
Great job on Plum Island. . .made the purchase this afternoon and took a quick flight around the pattern. I'll be flying the same airplane as you, the Mooney Mite, but with the Bugatti paint. Great little airplane.
-
Here's a last look at Plum Island FS9. I'm going to keep what I did for my own use anyway, but it doesn't match the new AFCAD that Bill was gracious enough to make up for the FlyIn.
And here's another view. . .
Now I'm off to purchase Plum Island for FSX, lol.
-
Yep, I was definitely out of the loop on your change to the AFCAD. My reason behind the questions I asked was because for the past few days I've been busy building Plum Island for FS9 with Hangars, static aircraft, trees, visitors parking off the road and additional trees and fencelines. . .and of course. . .all based on the default AFCAD, lol, lol.
Oh well, I should have taken more time to read all the related threads.
-
I haven't seen anyone mention this, so I'll bring it up at the risk of appearing completely out of the loop. The Fly-In is schedule for Plum Island correct? There isn't anything there in FS9, except for a few default buildings. . .it's FSX that has the only scenery addon available. Is everyone flying in FSX now? I have FSX installed but I fly FS9 a lot more and don't really plan to buy "Plum Island".
I have a reason for bringing this up, but I want to get clarification on this part first before I go any further with my questions.
Thanks!!

Hi Ed. . . . .
Getting cold up there in your part of the state?:D
Yep, woke up to frost on the car this morning. Supposed to be the same for the next few mornings before warming a bit on Sunday.
-
. . . . .Also I don't remember when using chat with FS9 that it put the sim on pause. It does it on mine in FSX.
Hi Dobie,
That's a known problem with the FSHost Client and FSX. . .also the reason that FSX can't be flown in Full Screen mode right now. They know about it, but haven't been able to come up with a fix yet. Bummer.
-
. . . . .I believe general recreational flying MP would still be quite accessible via the Emma Field server, and not having TeamSpeak should not discourage folks from getting together and having some fun with that; I know I'm certainly looking forward to doing some MP flying again soon! :P
GaryGB
Yep, I've been online every evening from around 7:00pm til 11:00pm CST. I've been flying the Emma Tour package and converting that to a single flightplan along with an FSNav plan as well (posted under a separate topic here). I also set up a new flight plan that encompasses about 1600nm of flying around Washington, British Columbia and Oregon, stopping at many of the FSAddon Scenery airports as well as the Lago Georender Series and freeware enhancements posted to flightsim.com.
Watching the posts from night to night, it's apparent that there is a very small circle of interested pilots right now. I suspect a lot of folks lost interest when EMMA FSX wasn't forthcoming as quickly as was originally hoped and when the server was plagued with one problem after another lowering everyone's "Fun Meter" to almost zero. At least the server appears to be stable now. . .TeamSpeak is no big deal really I can set one up in less than 10 minutes when I know someone is online and wants to use it. What I've found in the past though is that people (not everyone mind you) tend to shy away from TS for any number of reasons. . .accents, the way they sound on a mic, being told they can't use voice activation, can't speak very good english or any english and so on. Personally, I like TS because if I'm flying I normally won't answer a chat directed at me until I'm either on AP or on the ground. . .otherwise I'm too busy flying to take the time to answer. . .but with TS, no problem.
Hope to see some more folks start to get online and fly the skies around the Great Northwest. If I see some others online I'll start up TS and post the IP to log in. Happy Flying.

Ok folks,
As promised, I have compiled the individual legs of EMMA Tour III in a flight plan that can be loaded into your GPS as well as an FSNav file that can be loaded into FSNavigator for those who use that great utility. Hopefully this will give some folks a reason to get a group together to fly this great scenic tour. There's a weather file in the zip as well, but I normally just load real weather and fly whatever weather conditions are current in the area. Hope you get some enjoyment out of this. . .here's the link;

Hey Brad, all this was done with default objects so all I have to do is send you the bgl file and you can take a flight in there if ya want. I want to set up a flight from about 20nm out, then save it so that it will be easier to find until I can figure out how to make it an actual AFCAD with a water landing. Right now, if you leave KCKC and head directly to KINL, watch the GPS and when you reach a point 96nm from KINL the scenery is on your left.
Brad, send me your e-mail address and I'll send the bgl file to you.
