Error loading FSX

Recommended Posts

After reloading FSX and SP1 and 2 I'm getting an error message when loading FSX. Downloaded and reinstalled FSUIPC4.4.60. FSX loads if I chose to not run FSUIPC4.dll.

Just a note:

I now have the same message upon loading FSX. I have been having some issues with not being able to launch using ArrCab 2.6 (but could trap ok) and now I have this message so I think there is something going on possibly with my FSUIPC 4.60a ( Registered ) program.

Loaded the interim update. Replaced the .dll file with the interim update .dll file. Started FSX. Asks if I want to run FSUIPC. No and FSX loads without FSUIPC. Yes and FSX stops responding.

It's a clash with one of your other add-ons being loaded by SimConnect. It will be due to the bug in SimConnect which was never actually fixed, though Microsoft did do some work-arounds in SP1 and SP2 (better in SP2) which stops most (but not all) of these problems occurring.

It only occurs when one or more programs are being subjected to SimConnect's security check (via windows) at the same time that it is trying to load another. When it happens it is an unfortunate timing clash, and very elusive (which is why the FS team never managed to fix it before they were moved on). Normally allowing FS to continue gets one or both of the conflicting security checks done and then on subsequent loads you get no problems. Probably, having recently re-installed everything, you have several add-ons competing during the load time, all needing the security check.

The easiest way to sort this out is probably to temporarily disable some or all of the other DLL or EXEs from being loaded by SimConnect. You need to get each approved and working before adding the next, or even do them singly before enabling more than one.

The way to do that is by editing the DLL.XML and EXE.XML files, changing one param in each entry to disable them. But take care. It is easy to mess those files up. Make copies first. I use DBS Studio's "DBS FS Startup Editor" which might be a good investment if you are keen on FSX add-ons -- especially as it appears to be Free still! Go to http://www.dbsim.com/ .

Pete

Deleted FSX. Deleted Microsoft Games folders. Reinstalled FSX. Started FSX. Good results. Reinstall SP1. Started FSX. Good results. Reinstall SP2. Started FSX. Good results. Install FSUIPC4 4.60 FSX hangs during loading.

You cannot remove all of the elements affecting FSX like that. There are also critical files, controlling SimConnect actions during loading, in the AppData folders. It was pointless deleting FSX and reinstalling -- in fact that tends to wreck SimConnect completely, sometimes making it necessary to reinstall Windows completely too.

Latest FSUIPC install log

This in fact shows you didn't delete the crucial parts. The modules folder to start with:

Checking if there's already a version of FSUIPC4 installed in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Modules\FSUIPC4.DLL

... Version 4.600 found.

FSX Modules folder already exists.

and, crucially, the DLL.XML file in C:\Users\Jerry\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX:

Now checking DLL.XML ...

... There is a previous DLL.XML, checking for FSUIPC4 section.

... FSUIPC4 section already exists but will be replaced.

... FSUIPC4 section of DLL.XML written okay

There may also be an EXE.XML there, also loading add-ons via SimConnect.

If you did delete all of the folders in FSX, including the Modules folder, are there now FSUIP4.LOG and FSUIPC4.INI files there? If not then FSUIPC4 has never got to run, and FSX is crashing in the SimConnect loading as I described. If there is an FSUIPC4.LOG file, show it to me please.

Pete

I uninstalled FSX then deleted all remaining folders in Microsoft Games.

Here is the log file

The fact that there is a Log produced means that SimConnect is loading FSUIPC okay. So something else is happening. I need more information:

1. Can you get any more information from Windows when the crash occurs? I need at least the type of crash (access violation? Some number?), the module name, and the memory address if possible. Look for buttons on the report screen which reveal additional information. Or else, afterwards, see if the details are placed in the Windows error log (eg right-clcik on My Computer, select Manage, then Event viewer - Windows Logs - Application. look for the red ! error note relating to the incident.

2. Get me a SimConnect log. For information on how to enable SimConnect logging please see the FAQ subforum -- there's a thread there which explains how.

The SYSTEM hangs? Wow! That cannot be anything directly that FSUIPC is doing. It is all normal user-level code running in the FS process. it simply does not have enough privilege to hang a system!

fsx.exe

10.0.61355.0

Is that the current version? Mine is 61635. Maybe a difference between SP2 and Acceleration?

I think it is only SP1.

Aha! That confirms it! Your FSX installation is only at SP1 level. Please update to SP2. It fixes a lot of the sorts of bugs you are now seeing.

Removed and reinstalled SP2. FSX error message when loading. If I select yes, system stops responding. If I select no, FSX loads. In FSX from the "about" screen it advises I am running SP2.

This looks like the well-known SimConnect validation check bug. It is not that frequent but it is very difficult to get around when it happens. It seems to be timing dependent, but once you have it one a PC it tends to be the same on that PC unless you change the SimConnect configuration around.

FSUIPC4 really hasn't got much say in it because it happens before it is even running. Microsoft did try to fix it, but only succeeded in making it less common than it used to be.

Once FSUIPC4 is actually loaded and listed in FSX.CFG as 'trusted' then you don't get the problem any more because SimConnect doesn't repeat the same clashing validation calls into Windows.

There are two things you can try, in either order. First is to see if the very latest FSUIPC (4.634 from the Download Links sub-forum) has sufficiently different timings to get around the problem. This is rather unlikely as it would only be the size which made a difference there. The other is to temporarily stop all other SimConnect clients from loading at the same time, This only needs doing once, to get FSUIPC4 loaded and trusted. To do this find the EXE.XML (if there is one) and DLL.XML files -- in the same folder as your FSX.CFG file. Rename them, say as My EXE.XML and My DLL.XML. Then run the latest FSUIPC4 installer, which you can download from this link:

Install_FSUIPC4634.zip

and run FSX. When that proves okay, close FSX and go back to delete the new DLL.XML which would have been generated, and rename your copies back.

Note: if you don't know where to look for the XML files, look in the FSUIPC install log in your FSX Modules folder. It will tell you where it found the FSX.CFG file. That's where you'll find the XMLs.

Pete

Hmmm. I've not had any user which such a persistent problem since FSX came out. Seems you either have a corrupted FSX install, or just possibly a bad game device driver.

There's not much I can do from here to check those things. You could check Window's game controllers to see if there's anything listed which shouldn't be. You never had an Epic installed at all, did you? If you don't know what that means, never mind.

I really need the module name, and address, which is actually crashing. You said earlier that you don't get any information, that the SYSTEM actually hangs. Do you still confirm that? You have to do a hardware reset or switch off and on again? If so then it really must be at driver level, as in a games device driver or even, possibly, a video driver, though that sounds rather unlikely as video things are nothing to do with any FSUIPC start-up.

If you cannot get any more details, eg by clicking a button on the failure screen, or from the Windows error log, then all I can do is work on a lot of extra logging in FSUIPC4 to find out what point, exactly, it reaches before things die. This could take a while, and I can't start till next week, so the more investigation you can do your end the easier and maybe quicker it is going to be.

Pete

Looking at the FSUIPC4 log you supplied, it seems to get stuck during initialisation, before logging the FLT UNC and FS UNC paths. So, just to check if that is where we need to look, I've added a little extra logging in that area.

Please download FSUIPC 4635a by clicking this link, and copy it into your FSX Modules folder. The edit the FSUIPC4.INI file, adding these two lines to the [General] section:

Debug=Please

TestOptions=x400

Then run FSX, get the crash, and show me the FSUIPC4.LOG.

Here is the FSUIPC4.LOG file:

Thanks. It gets stuck in the routine which is calling Windows to find the registry stuff to convert: your FSX flight path:

"C:\Users\Jerry\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\"

into a UNC ("Universal Naming Convention", I think) path so that it can be accessed from other PCs.

Now I know where is it getting stuck, I'll put logging into that routine (it is quite small) to see why.

Later,

Pete

Don't know if this will help but I found it in an error logging section of Windows:

Thanks, but no, we'll get more info from the extra logging I'm doing. I'm now half convinced there's a Registry problem, but what it could be I don't know yet.

Please do two things this time. First, before running FSX, run the registry editor so that you can extract the relevant section for me. you may need to be the Administrator for this:

Start button, enter "regedit" and press return.

In the Explorer-type path system on the left, select and open up

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

then SYSTEM

then CurrentControlSet

then Services

There'll be a lot of those. Scroll to find

LanmanServer

Then select Shares within that, and with it selected, go to the File menu, select Export, and save as, say "MyShares" to somewhere where you'll be able to find the resulting file.

Close Regedit, find the file, open it with NotePad, and cut and paste its contents into a message here, please.

---------------------

Please download FSUIPC 4635b by clicking this link, and copy it into your FSX Modules folder. Then edit the FSUIPC4.INI file, adding these two lines to the [General] section if you have removed them since the last test:

Debug=Please

TestOptions=x400

Then run FSX, get the crash, and show me the FSUIPC4.LOG.

Thanks,

Pete

Myshares info:

Hmm. Interesting that you've shared "Users" as a whole. But the registry entries look fine. FSUIPC isn't getting past the Users entry in any case. It is somehow crashing when trying to verify what looks to be a correct path to your FSX files folder:

\\JERRY-PC\Users\Jerry\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\

The very next action is to get the "file attributes" for that path, to make sure it is a valid path and that it is a directory,, not a file. Then, that's it ...

... so I am still a bit at a loss as to what is happening. I'm going to try one more iteration, one slightly tighter logging. If this shows, as I suspect, that Windows is crashing or hanging when I call it to read the attributes for that path, then I have no answer other than there's something wrong with windows.

If it isn't solvable with this share name, perhaps you could try sharing the Flight Simulator X Files folder itself, say as FSPLANS, a name many programs like.

But before that, please download FSUIPC 4635c by clicking this link, and copy it into your FSX Modules folder. Then edit the FSUIPC4.INI file, adding these two lines to the [General] section if you have removed them since the last test:

Debug=Please

TestOptions=x400

Then run FSX, get the crash, and show me the FSUIPC4.LOG.

Thanks

Pete
