Delta14Sierra Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 I am experiencing an issue that coincides with the installation of FSUIPC 4.82. After setting up and launching into a flight, FSX is crashing at the moment when LINDA and LUA scripts typically load. Subsequent computer reboots and relaunching of FSX results in the same experience. I went back to my previous version of FSUIPC (version 4.811), and the problem went away. I am also able to complete flights, and my LINDA assignments and LUA scripts load and work without issue.
Pete Dowson Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 I am experiencing an issue that coincides with the installation of FSUIPC 4.82. I went back to my previous version of FSUIPC (version 4.811), and the problem went away. I am also able to complete flights, and my LINDA assignments and LUA scripts load and work without issue. I'd need a lot more information, and probably help from the LINDA authors. The changes between 4.811 and 4.82 are minimal as far as any of that stuff is concerned. The only Lua-affecting changes were the addtion of the Tracing facilities for Lua (a new entry in the Lgging tab), and the optional prevention of joystick re-scanning when entering the FSUIPC options. I've made no other changes which I can imagine would possibly affect LINDA or Lua specifically. You could start by providing details of the crash -- module and offset as reported by Windows in the Windows error log, and the FSUIPC4 Logs and INI files. Maybe you could also enable the Lua logging so that we can see what Lua module is crashing and when. Regards Pete

One other change i forgot to mention is that Lua DLLs are now searched in the Modules\DLL folder using the environment "PATH" statement. I'm wondering if this somehow affects Linda. Do you have a Modules\DLLfolder? If so, what is in it?I think we'll certainly need a LINDA person to help here. I got completely lost last time I looked at a LINDA problem. I don't understand anything it is doing, to be honest.RegardsPete
Delta14Sierra Posted April 7, 2012 Author Report Posted April 7, 2012 Do you know what those strange fielnames are supposed to be? I also do not know what those strange characters are in the file names. It appears to me as though they are corrupted. Do you have a Modules\DLLfolder? If so, what is in it? I do NOT have a Modules\DLL folder. I do have a number of DLL files in the Modules folder: A2A_Feel.dll AccuFeelMenu.dll ActiGate.dll FSSimTimMenu.dll FSUIPC.DLL FSUIPC4.dll GFDev.dll pfcfsx.dll sb3gaugebridge.dll ViMaCore2004.DLL ViMaIScn.DLL ViMaNET.DLL
Pete Dowson Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 I also do not know what those strange characters are in the file names. It appears to me as though they are corrupted. Yes, they certainly are, that's why I asked you what the true names of those Lua files was. What was being attempted there? I think I asked you for the wrong logging -- I would like to see the FSUIPC4 log file itself with "Debug/Trace Lua plug-ins" checked, not "Log Lua plug-ins separately". That would give us a complete view of what those plug-ins were trying to do at the time of the crash. I would also need to see the plug-ins involved at that time. If this all looks like getting a bit big for a message, please just zip them up and send to petedowson@btconnect.com. I do have a number of DLL files in the Modules folder: Wll, of those some versions of Actigate are known to have compatibility problems, but only older versions I think, and FSUIPC.DLL is the FS9 and before version of FSUIPC and certainly is wanted there at all. Nor, I think, should ViMaCore2004.DLL which is probably the 2004 version. And, please, please, do find the details of the crash in the Windows error log. I need the module name and offset and error code of the crash. Regards Pete
Delta14Sierra Posted April 8, 2012 Author Report Posted April 8, 2012 Please be patient...next two days are hectic for me. Will be back in touch on Tuesday.
Pete Dowson Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 Please be patient...next two days are hectic for me. Will be back in touch on Tuesday. Take as long as you like! I have plenty to do anyway! ;-) Pete
Delta14Sierra Posted April 9, 2012 Author Report Posted April 9, 2012 please, do find the details of the crash in the Windows error log. I need the module name and offset and error code of the crash Please direct me as to where to find this info.
Pete Dowson Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Please direct me as to where to find this info. Just click the Start button in Win7, and type "events", and Enter. The Event Viewer will appear. Select Windows Logs then Application. Scroll down the list of application events which will appear until you find an "Error" level one with "Application Error" listed as the Source. Look through those until you find the Faulting application identified as FSX.EXE. If you know the date and rough time of the last one you can find it quickly as that is displayed too. In the details there will be the faulting module name, offset and excepption code. Or just select al the displayed details and copy/paste into a message here. Pete
Delta14Sierra Posted April 9, 2012 Author Report Posted April 9, 2012 Pete, Here is the Windows Log: Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb14 Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00000000 Faulting process id: 0x8a4 Faulting application start time: 0x01cd165999cc10c7 Faulting application path: D:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe Faulting module path: unknown Report Id: 6941ae98-824d-11e1-a755-001fd081ae61 I did some further testing and I think I have narrowed things down a little. The line from the ipcReady.log with the strange characters in the filename references a lua script (setupDuke.lua) which contains the following entries: -- Load Linda ipc.runlua("Linda") -- Instruments using GF-166 displays ipc.runlua("FT-Timer.lua") ipc.runlua("Duke-ADF1.lua") ipc.runlua("Duke-FL-XPDR.lua") ipc.runlua("DME-Select.lua") ipc.runlua("Altimeter.lua") ipc.runlua("CabinAlt.lua") ipc.runlua("Oil-Temp-Press.lua") -- LEDs of GF-RP48 modules ipc.runlua("Flaps.lua") -- Flaps ipc.runlua("ATC-LED.lua") -- ATC LEDs ipc.runlua("GPS-LED.lua") -- GPS LEDs ipc.runlua("GF-LEDs.lua") -- Sound/Ident LEDs ipc.runlua("ATC-Popup-LED.lua") -- GoFlight Modules Cold & Dark ipc.runlua("GF-Dark.lua") Suspecting that one or more of the above LUA scripts is causing the problem, I "commented out" (--) all of the lines. I then "uncommented" each line one-by-one followed by a launch of FSX. The ONLY line that is causing the above issue is: ipc.runlua("linda"). Below is the Linda.log ********* LUA: "Linda" Log [from FSUIPC version 4.82] ********* 197980 System time = 09/04/2012 10:07:58, Simulator time = 10:04:49 (18:04Z) 197980 ˜±t` LUA.0: beginning "D:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\M2°Â2 As a final check, I "commented out" --ipc.runlua("linda"), but "uncommented" all of the other ipc.runlua entries. FSX launched without issue. So unless I am missing something else, it appears to me that the issue has something to do with the launch of LINDA.
Pete Dowson Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Here is the Windows Log ... I've never seen one like that before -- not even knowing which module crashed! Are there no others with decent information? The line from the ipcReady.log with the strange characters in the filename references a lua script (setupDuke.lua) which contains the following entries: Good grief! 16 different plug-ins all trying to start at the same time? The ONLY line that is causing the above issue is: ipc.runlua("linda"). Below is the Linda.log********* LUA: "Linda" Log [from FSUIPC version 4.82] ********* 197980 System time = 09/04/2012 10:07:58, Simulator time = 10:04:49 (18:04Z) 197980 ˜±t` LUA.0: beginning "D:\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\M2°Â2 As a final check, I "commented out" --ipc.runlua("linda"), but "uncommented" all of the other ipc.runlua entries. FSX launched without issue. So unless I am missing something else, it appears to me that the issue has something to do with the launch of LINDA Okay, so now please get the log I requested a while ago, wqith all those other entries commented out and only the Linda one loading. First, though, UNCHECK the separate Lua logging option and CHECK the Lua trace option instead. The logging will go to the main FSUIPC log. Zip it up along with Linda.lua and send it as requested earlier. Regards Pete
ClaudeMan Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 (edited) Hello Pete, Seems I'm seeing similar corruptions in the LUA log file although I do not think FSUIPC is contributing to CTDs in my case (and maybe this is an issue for a separate thread). [FSX, WIN 7(x64), FSUIPC Ver 4.820, PMDG737NGX, GoFlight MCPPro, Steve Munn's NGX_AUTO.LUA] Yesterday, checking FSUIPC.ini for 737NGX settings, I happened to look at the NGX_Auto.log file.(Not sure why I'm logging NGX_AUTO.LUA, but that's not important at the moment.) It contained the same odd corruptions discussed in the earlier postings. It starts with the upgrade from Ver4.811 to Ver4.812 and continues thru Ver 4.820. Here are the lines from NGX_AUTO.log showing the change: ********* LUA: "NGX_AUTO" Log [from FSUIPC version 4.811] ********* 823108 System time = 22/03/2012 12:32:51, Simulator time = 15:03:05 (14:03Z) 823108 LUA: beginning "F:\FlightsimX\Modules\NGX_AUTO.lua" ********* LUA: "NGX_AUTO" Log [from FSUIPC version 4.812] ********* 96222 System time = 26/03/2012 13:31:01, Simulator time = 15:10:27 (14:10Z) 96222 8@z` LUA.0: beginning "F:\FlightsimX\Moduz Since I suspect FSX did not terminate normally in both of the above instances I did a more controlled test today using first FSUIPC 4.811 and then FSUIPC Ver 4.820. Loaded FSX, then the PMDG737NGX, manipulated several GoFlight MCPPro dials/switches and exited FSX (FSX terminated normally). Here are the lines from NGX_AUTO.log again showing the differences between Ver 4.811 and Ver 4.820. The lines are un-edited direct copies from the log file.: ********* LUA: "NGX_AUTO" Log [from FSUIPC version 4.811] ********* 53290 System time = 11/04/2012 12:25:10, Simulator time = 14:18:10 (18:18Z) 53290 LUA: beginning "F:\FlightsimX\Modules\NGX_AUTO.lua" 162475 >>> Thread forced exit <<< 162475 System time = 11/04/2012 12:26:59, Simulator time = 14:19:50 (18:19Z) ********* LUA execution terminated: Log Closed ********* ********* LUA: "NGX_AUTO" Log [from FSUIPC version 4.82] ********* 80575 System time = 11/04/2012 12:33:51, Simulator time = 14:18:10 (18:18Z) 80575 ?Å’` LUA.0: beginning "F:\FlightsimX\Modur 213129 >>> Thread forc 213129 System time = 11/04/2012 12:36:03, Simulator time = 14:20:15 (18:20Z) ********* LUA execution terminated: Log Closed ********* Regards Claude Edited April 11, 2012 by ClaudeMan
Pete Dowson Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Seems I'm seeing similar corruptions in the LUA log file Thanks for the data. I'll try to check it out, but none of my Lua programs exhibit such oddities. I'm still hoping someone with these problems will actually use the Lua tracing option INSTEAD of the separate Lua log option, as this should show me a lot more. That's why I added it! I have asked several times but no one has yet done this! :-( Pete
ClaudeMan Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Pete, I just created an FSUIPC log file with "Debug/Trace Lua plug-ins" check and NOT "Log Lua plug-ins". I've zipped it in the file "ClaudeTraceLogs.zip" and will shortly send it to you via email. Although you may already have it somewhere, I also included Steve Munn's Lua file as well. Hope this helps. Regards Claude
Delta14Sierra Posted April 11, 2012 Author Report Posted April 11, 2012 Pete, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. As I stated previously, I was away from my computer for a few days. My current "working" version of FSUIPC is 4.811. The only LUA logging feature I see in FSUIPC is for "LUA program logging." If "Debug/Trace Lua plug-ins" is a feature that has been added since 4.811, then I am afraid I may not be able to help. Any version of FSUIPC beyond 4.811 shuts FSX down before I can even access the FSUIPC setup. If there is another way to access/activate this feature without having to go into FSUIPC, then please advise. Dan

Any version of FSUIPC beyond 4.811 shuts FSX down before I can even access the FSUIPC setup Since the point of the tracing is to find out why it is crashing, it isn't much good doing in in 4.811 even if the feature existed back then! ;-) If there is another way to access/activate this feature without having to go into FSUIPC, then please advise. There are two ways. One is to enable it one a load of FSX which doesn't crash -- i.e. with Linda not loading (I think you identified that already, did you not? The ONLY line that is causing the above issue is: ipc.runlua("linda"). The other, yes, it to add the line into the INI beforehand. the entry needed is. as always, documented of course -- it is in Item 7 in the changes list included with the updated FSUIPC4. To save you looking it up it is DebugLua=Yes in the [General] section. Please use version 4.821 now, not 4.820. See the Download Links subforum. [LATER] Hold on, don't do anything yet! ClaudeMan sent me logs and the NGCX lua and I've repro'd the odd characters in the Lua logs, and am fixing that now -- it'll be in 4.822 in an hour or less. Now at present i don't see how this would cause your specific problems if you don't normally run with that separate Lua logs option selected -- because then the log entries made by LINDA would go to the main FSUIPC4 log file and that doesn't have a problem. So, my question: do you always run with Lua logging separately enabled? If so, maybe you can try again, with 4.820 or 4.821, with no logging options checked (just remove the LogLua line from the FSUIPC4.INI file)? Maybe the crash problem is being caused by the corrupt logging, and is exacerbated in the case of LINDA because of the sheer number of log messages it seems to produce? Anyway, I'll fix the Lua logging now and release that as 4.822, interim update. Once I know one way of the other about the crash I'll decide how to proceed. I'm away Friday-Sunday inclusive, so if 4.822 doesn't fix it it might be next week now. [LATER STILL] Okay, 4.822 is up. Please go ahead, make it crash. If it does please only then get me that trace logging. If it is okay, please advise. thanks. Regards Pete
Delta14Sierra Posted April 12, 2012 Author Report Posted April 12, 2012 FSX loads without issue with 4.822. Well done, Pete! Thanks!
Pete Dowson Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 FSX loads without issue with 4.822. Ah, good. I'll rebuild the installer and replace the 4.82 package then. Thanks for testing! Regards Pete
ClaudeMan Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 Pete, And indeed the strange characters are all gone too!! Thanks again Pete! Claude
Andydigital Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 I've noticed with this latest build 4822 that in FS Control sorting of the drop down menus appear to be broken e.g. if I was looking for throttle1 cut I would highlight the drop down list then type "T" "H" and that would jump me to throttle in the list. Now when I do this is just shows "Takeoff assist arm set" and absolutely nothing else in the list at all as soon as I press "T", adding any further letters does nothing.

I've added " <custom Control>" but that shouldn't affect the sorting. All that stuff is standard Windows code, not mine, but I'll take a look. Thanks. [LATER] Fixed in 4.823, now up. I stupidly mixed up "killfocus" notifications with "selchange" notifications! Pete
Andydigital Posted April 17, 2012 Report Posted April 17, 2012 Thanks Pete I'll try it after dinner. One comment, when making additions to your posts could you please just make a completely new post rather than editing the last post you made, the reason I ask for this is that the forum software does not send an email notification to anyone following the thread if you just edit a previous post. I only found out about your later comments after following a link posted by Artem the developer of LINDA at AVSIM's forum 5 days later, lol. Thanks anyway.

Oh, I didn't know that! Sorry. I only do it when my post is still the last in the thread. Pete
Andydigital Posted April 17, 2012 Report Posted April 17, 2012 No need to apologise Pete, at least you are now aware of the boards foibles.
