Volunteers with multiple devices needed to test improved device detection

After the previous attempt proved to be a failure on Windows 10, though running perfectly and efficiently on Windows 7, I have worked out a different method of checking on Joystick Devices, GUIDs and Joystick IDs.

This one uses nothing in Windows that wasn't used before, so it should be fine. It involves doing two passes through the DirectInput entries in the Registry, once to locate and record known devices (i.e. those already identified in the FSUIPC4 settings) and a second pass to add any new ones.

In both cases, omitted Joystick IDs, or IDs differing from the last time FSUIPC was run, are corrected. This is safe because the device is uniquely identified by its GUID, not its ID. This corrective action would mean that even users who are not using JoyLetters should still have all the correct assignments after joystick IDs somehow become changed.

I would appreciate this being tested on systems with more than just the two joystick devices I can muster, and also on Windows 10 or even 8.

On the test version have a reproducible problem with the second of two rotary "identical" panels by same manufacturer.  Both recognized and functional on 4964, but second rotary panel (device F or 5) not functional on 4964a_test.  Thank you for all your hard work and continued improvements!

I couldn't resist having a quick look.

The problem appears to be that it seems to get the same GUIOS for both of the pair, from the registry. I'm evidently not searching quite correctly. I think I know why, but do you thing you could find the registry entries for me and export them please?

To do this, run Regedit (from the START button), and, in the explorer window part on the left, drill down to select the entry

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\DirectInput\VID_16C0&PID_27CB

then, with that selected, go to the File menu, select Export, set a filename, eg DTArotary and press Save. It will save as a .reg file.

Then just close Regedit (you won't have changed anything), rename the .reg file as a .txt file instead, and paste it here -- it won't be too long.  I can then copy it, rename it back to .reg, and import that data into my registry and use it to work things out.

You are very welcome! Thank YOU for testing it for me.

I'm still hoping for a tester to volunteer who is using Windows 10! Last time, with 4.963, it was all tested out fine on Win7 but fell apart with the first Win10 user. I'm pretty confident that won't happen this time, as I'm only using things I was previous using okay, but it needs testing. 

I might have to just release it as an interim version and see what happens ...

Well, it seems it found them and set the Joystick IDs okay, but has it changed your device 0 to device 4? I ask becuse this is logged before the scan:

This wouldn't do any harm if you were using JoyLetters. but as it is your button assignments on Device 0 won't work as it is now Device 4. I assume you restored your backup INI?

I'm a bit concerned if it is moving Joystick IDs unnecessarily. I just need confirmation from you, please.

This a "work in progress" sim PC and the button assignments are managed in Prosim, I also moved some of the devices to a 2nd PC recently which may have confused things.

Another puzzle, if you can explain please. Though there are only 4 devices identified (originally as 0, 1, 2, 3 but after the test 4, 1, 2, 3, neither arrangement matches your assignments. for example:

I just need to know which assignment was correct for the second Bodnar board -- 0 or 4? I see they both have Yoke assignments -- do you have two yokes? The throttle only appears on device 4.

I'm going to upload a version 4.964e test DLL soon. I'd be grateful if you'd return to the backup INI file and re-run the test, please.

I replace a yoke recently but though that I had removed all the old assigments

No, only one yoke connected. There should also not be a throttle assignment for this yoke, I now have a separate throttle connected to Prosim using Pololu cards

Ok. Perhaps you could go back to the back-up INI (before the test here), and edit it to remove left-over assignments please -- just the device 4 ones I assume.

Then I'd be grateful if you could repeat the test, but using  FSUIPC4964e TEST

Apologies for the delay in responding. I've checked various backup files and the Bodnar board (DC6ADB60-...) was assigned as joystick 4 in 2015 so I don't think that there is any issue with assignments being moved. 

version e (test) does enumerate the devices in a different order to version c (test) which now matches the joystick assignments

The part of the log you show me is just showing what FSUIPC read from the INI file, as it was at the time. he idea is that those assignments should be enforced, but I can't see that from what yo post.

So, do you think I could see the whole log, please? At least to the end of the Joystick Scan section?

Hi Pete,

I've just tried 4.964e & it doesn't recognise my 2 Thrustmaster MFD panels ( they're just a collection of buttons really). Going back to 4.964 they're seen and work fine although they're not listed in the "joystick device scan" section in the FSUIPC log. HIDScanner sees the 2 MFDs OK.
