  1. Wow, Bill!

Excellent experiences in your real world flying history (man, am I jealous)!

I am an aspiring amphibian flyer with a great appreciation for the Beaver(s) and particularly with the Albatross!!!

I'll be looking forward to reading more about your experiences and seeing any photos you might be willing to share with us from time to time.

I have done some flying over the past few years with my colleague in a Lake Amphibian LA4-200 EP with the "Batwing" option (the Colonial Skimmer and the subsequent Lake Amphibian series were inspired in part by the great Grumman and Consolidated amphibians as you might already know).

Perhaps we can share some tales of our adventures, and arrange some "virtual" amphibious adventures in FS multi-player flying sessions through the EFFC sometime?

Great to have you here with us! 8)

PS: In answer to your question:

I would recommend being sure to read the Emma Field Manual (the PDF file) when you get it; also, scan through some of the older EFFC forum pages when you get a chance to see some of the informative, captivating, and hilarious goings-on which have transpired here in the past at the EFFC Forum.

FS has so much potential and special features, there is a whole world there for just about any enthusiast's areas of interest. So, to coin a phrase: "The Sky's The Limit"!

I would probably suggest that you consider the balance of 2007 as a good place to spend the most time flying in FS2004. There are many outstanding freeware and payware add-ons available for it which give it much of what one has in FSX.

To correct most of the water body shapes and elevations, special landclass/land use features etc., "Ultimate Terrain" (UT) for USA/Canada/Europe is a must for the amphibious scenery enthusiast. There is a free port for most of its features over (as a copy) into FSX if desired so one can enjoy its enhancements in both FS2004 and FSX until the new "UT for FSX" is released.

It should be used with detailed top quality terrain "add-on" mesh [ex] since FS 2004 is not precisely geopositioned relative to the real world.

FSX by comparison, is rather well aligned with the real world and has a scalable 38.2 meter default terrain mesh included with a "near-Ultimate Terrain quality" depiction of the world's land masses and water bodies (with some areas still requiring serious correction by add-ons such as the upcoming Ultimate Terrain for FSX etc.).

And yet... FSX has such gorgeous "Living Water" that it is hard for an amphibian pilot to resist! So, personally, I own and enjoy both, with the resolute acceptance up front that even on a powerful computer, in its current, out of the box version, it will require special (manual... but easy to do) tweaks in a few FSX files to make it run tolerably until we see Service Pack 1 (in April 2007 ?) and the DirectX10 (DX10) upgrade very late in this year 2007.

FSX will run on a modest computer to give one a taste of what is to come later in the year, and would still be worth buying now in addition to FS2004; however one must budget for a $350 to $500 video card (with no less than 256MB VRAM) in addition to a powerful CPU (ex: AMD Athlon FX series or Intel Core 2 Extreme 6x00 series) and no less than 1 GB of RAM to get a better flying experience with either version of FS in my opinion!

    Hope this helps! :D

  2. Hi Peter:

Thanks for another great showcase of the Glacier Bay flying experience. :D

I may just have to take a little time to do some flying up North myself sometime!

Looks like another excellent add-on!

  3. Hi Bill:

I think Pups (Skinny Puppy) has conveyed a practical perspective: Emma Field for FSX will require some time to prepare after Richard Goldstein and the other development team members have a chance to start on it; they are likely to be fulfilling other personal and commercial commitments for a while longer before they get up to full speed developing Emma Field for FSX ( "Emma-X" ?). :)

Since the FSX application Service Pack1 and the FSX DirectX 10 update are not released yet, the FSX SDK and related development tools are still being finalized, and the Windows Vista DX10 compatible video hardware and drivers have not yet matured, it would make a lot of sense to purchase Emma Field 2004 from SimMarket and enjoy it in FS2004 (FS9) for the better part of this year.

An "Emma Field 2004 Enhancement Project" is in the works which should further increase the enjoyment of EFFC and PNW area enthusiasts while running on the FS9 platform, as we all eagerly await what will undoubtedly be an even better Emma Field for FSX later this year 2007! :P

Happy Flying... and welcome to the EFFC! 8)

  4. Interesting !

Also, by sheer coincidence, i saw the moon over my home town this afternoon when i returned from a ride to Ruud 'FScene' Faber. I thought it was remarkable to see it hanging over the (very) old churches that form the town's silhouette for many centuries already.....

    Hi Francois:

Sounds like an inspirational experience... I hope you had a chance to take photos of that! :D

It would certainly have been more well received than this "moon" photo snapped by a fellow aviator!

  5. Yup, in spite of some trivial little problems like the ice caps melting, we live in exiting times  I have taken a subscription now to SL and will investigate feasibility over the next few months (even though Linden Dollars are virtual, they need to be paid for by real US$ ! ).

I also need to find a Third Life to find the time for the Second Life activities, while the First Life seems to continue being spent entirely on boring things such as making a living

Sometimes I wish I was ONLY virtual.... of course that day will come too... 8)

Hee hee hee... Gawd that was funny!

Ain't it the truth: needing a "Third Life" and additional budgetary allocations in order to accomodate the activities of the new virtual "Second Life"! :P

    GaryGB

  6. Funny isn't it ?

You know what I was thinking when I saw that Flight1 lounge... why couldn't we make an Emma Field Club on SL !? Wouldn't that be fun !?

It's on my things-to-ponder-over list now..... Besides, I don't want ya'll hanging out with the competition !!! 8)

    Excellent idea, Francois! :D

I must say that when I saw the announcement for the Flight1 "Pilots Lounge" on Second Life, I couldn't help but feel that they might have gotten the inspiration from seeing the comeraderie and virtual identities (or "second lives") inspired by our improvisational cooperative story-telling and mischievous goings on, all fueled by exuberant creativity and virtual consumption of Uncle Elmers Old #5 booze here at the EFFC!

So I said to myself: "Self... we should have this for Emma Field, as it is already the original, quintessential Pilots Lounge and all around hangout for the EFFC!"

At the least, I think Richard should plan on expanding the Emma Field for FSX clubhouse floorplan slightly to allow for Chez Fritz' weekend dining (and miscellaneous group events such as awards banquets for flying contests, etc.) in another larger room adjacent to the bar area.

We could then include the option of installing an inside textured version of it and certain other existing buildings, so we can perhaps have some fun taking screenies with embedded 2-D multimedia files and 3-D static or animated models of people and other objects created and placed via appropriate software for functional and/or humorous purposes.

Of course it would be nice to have some (additional) new animations such as hangar doors and other goings-on about the existing FS scenery premises as had been implemented in subsequent Georender and FS Addon sceneries too!

Lots of exciting possibilities with all this new-fangled technology, isn't there? :P

  7. Hi Chris:

Very impressive multimedia website... seems like a firm with a solid history.

As for Schwaebisch Hall, a beautiful and remarkably well-preserved location which would be a tourist's must-see.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schw%C3%A4bisch_Hall

I hope you will be happy there; you're a fellow "worth his salt", to "coin" a phrase!

PS: Hope you'll get to do some glider flying if you visit the other branch location!

    Cheers! :D

    GaryGB

  8. Congratulations, Chris!

It's a "wish come true", isn't it?

Here's wishing you "Good Luck" with your new adventures! :D

PS: Recaro compelled a Yahoo search turning up this Wiki:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recaro

"In 1983, Keiper purchased all shares in Recaro and established Keiper Recaro GmbH & Co in Kirchheim (Teck) near Esslingen am Neckar."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirchheim_%28Teck%29

"Kirchheim unter Teck is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in the district of Esslingen. It is located on the small river Lauter, a tributary of the Neckar. It is situated near the Teck castle, approximatively 25 km southeast of Stuttgart."

Here's a view of from Teck Castle; won't be long until you're the glider pilot impressing the towns people below?

    (see the fabulous view!) :P

  9. Hmmmm.. I don't usually mix in these sort of 'discussions', but here I have to 'correct' some of the myth surrounding Fritz and well...... add some new myth as it were..... 8)

Who knows what he looks like or is doing TODAY !!)  8) 8) 8)

    Say... that looks somewhat familiar!

Was "Fritz of the Future" patrolling here during last year's "virtual upheaval" at Emma Field?

  10. Nice boat, Pups! :D

    Hey Cecil:

I see you finally got the double-decker yacht you've been dreaming of!

Now tell me, that device on the upright frame against the window on the 2nd floor "cabin"... is it a:

    1.) Beer cooler

    2.) Microwave

3.) TV/Monitor (for both sports and Flight Simming)?

    Just curious! :P

  11. Hi Bob:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this... been overwhelmingly busy helping my girlfriend move into her new place for the better part of a week now. No rest for the wicked, I guess!

Francois is the local expert and long time advocate on keeping the add-on sceneries outside of the FS folder chain for individual control and easier troubleshooting purposes.

If you wanted to study up on this further while Francois prepares his reply, there was a more detailed exploration of options for installing and moving add-ons outside of one's FS install folder chain recently that you might wish to review:

    http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.pight=dummy

As for your screenie... if it were me, I'd move every [FS install path]\Addon Scenery "subfolder" except Addon Scenery\Scenery and Addon Scenery\Texture and their contents over to your "Flight Sim Sceneries" folder chain.

Also, I'd create a subfolder under your Flight Sim Sceneries\ folder named: \Henderson_NV\Scenery, and move Henderson_NCV.BGL into it from the [FS install path]\Addon Scenery subfolder.

Then I'd create: \Wasatch\Scenery, and move Wasatch.BGL into that from the [FS install path]\Addon Scenery subfolder.

Once Henderson_NV.BGL and Wasatch.BGL are in the above individually named \Scenery subfolders under your Flight Sim Sceneries\ folder, add a new entry for each into the FS Scnery Library user interface, save, exit FS, restart FS, and test those locations out for successful scenery loading of those areas.

[EDIT] PS: When you're done with the above, don't forget to delete any *.dat scenery index files left by the FS Scenery Library engine in the original [FS install path]\Addon Scenery subfolder, and in the new Flight Sim Sceneries\ folders named: \Henderson_NV\Scenery and \Wasatch\Scenery or they might confuse the FS Scenery Library engine the next time FS goes to launch a flight.

By deleting those particular *.dat scenery index files in any modified, relocated, or newly created folders, you force the FS Scenery Library engine to generate a new Scenery.CFG file and reduce the chance for FS scenery loading errors.

    Hope this helps! :D

  12. Hi All:

    Just an initial progress update...

The Geocorrector team begins their survey of the Emma Field 2004 Enhancement project area by checking out the sailboat "sailing" in midair over by Fritz's cabin on Lake Cushman. :P

... A stowaway onboard was forced to "walk the plank"!

    post-14010-128689505166_thumb.jpg

  13. Oops.

Sorry I meant deactivate the FS Global mesh!

-> Deactive the FSG mesh to get the default scenery where Emma is...

    Don't want to confuse...

    Grisu

Yes, but if all goes well, FS2004 should automatically choose the Emma Field enhancement mesh due to its greater inherent resolution, and consequently would not bother to load the FSGlobal or other 3rd party add-on mesh (for the area covered by the Emma Field enhancement mesh... other "non-Emma" areas covered by FSGlobal etc. would still be allowed to load normally).

Thus a user would not have to manually disable such mesh as it is already done for them by FS; but if for any reason a user wishes to manually override the process, they can still do so via the FS2004 Scenery Library user interface.

    GaryGB

  14. Another question:

Would it be possible to reactivate the part of my FS Global mesh where Emma is located??

    Hi Grisu:

First of all, I would not anticipate that the "Geocorrector Emma Field 2004 Enhancement Mesh" would be so excessively large as to extend an inappropriate distance away from its intended coverage as to disrupt use of other 3rd party terrain mesh at the areas surrounding neighboring airports such as Bremerton and Sanderson.

So one would not ordinarily need to be concerned about turning off the Emma enhancement mesh; but if one did wish to do so, it should simply involve: un-check the Emma enhancement mesh in the FS2004 scenery library user interface, save the changes, restart FS2004, and resume flying normally.

Or are the separate parts of the mesh so large, that I loose of of the USA when I deactivate a file (in this case rename it)?

How can I find the right file in my FS Global directory?

Right at the moment I'm not on my FS computer, so I can't take a look at the directories, but perhaps someone has a clue how the FS Global mesh is built up...

    Thanks

    Grisu

As above, initial plans would not involve a large region around Emma Field to the point that one would need to be concerned about that.

    GaryGB

  15. Hi Grisu:

FS reads information in terrain mesh files and automatically uses the highest resolution mesh it finds; if there are matching resolution files, it uses other logic to decide which one to load.

So, ordinarily, any mesh of a higher resolution than that of the FS default would be displayed, and the default mesh would be ignored by the FS rendering engine.

What I am describing here is the ability to use a mesh which has an overall resolution higher than FS default which literally has a hole cut out in it that will leave Emma Field where it currently is on the default resolution mesh; only the surrounding areas would contain data points at a higher resolution.

In the case of the data points for the Emma Field area inside the "hole, a "copy" or equivalent of the default FS mesh elevations underlying the Emma Field scenery itself would be included so that the entire region is a complete scenery "tile" or data area during FS rendering (which is always done live... and therefore is always demanding on the CPU/GPU!)

I believe it should be possible to set the internal resolution attribute of the proposed mesh in such a way as to cause the FS rendering engine to automatically ignore the default and most if not all other FS2004 3rd party terrain meshes in the surrounding areas covered by a replacement "Geocorrector Emma Field Enhancement Mesh" so that one can use any 3rd party mesh in combination with it and not have a "bleed-thru" or protrusion of that 3rd party mesh.

I hope this might explain the idea a little better that one would only have to make this mesh available in the scenery library, and FS should substitute it automatically for most if not all add-on FS2004 mesh without further effort on the part of the FS end user. :D
